Julian is watching the slideshow and reminiscing about better days. I mean, that's kind of obvious, but before I was thinking it was showing him being homesick on his trip to Earth. Also, it's kind of funny that Karin is shown at the party, wearing a dress and having fun. Maybe later in the series she does learn to relax, but as of this point she's nowhere close. As sad as it was when Yang died, nothing in this series tops the moment when you see Kircheis' tombstone and the inscription on it: Mein Freund. Coming from a guy like Reinhardt, that's really touching, and it only gets more so as the series goes on and you realize there was probably nobody else in his life he ever regarded as highly or showed as much intimacy toward again, including his wife.

Finished it a couple of days ago. Downloading the gaidens now even though I said I wouldn't because I need more of what is probably the best anime ever. I also have a Rosen Ritter avatar now because why not. Young Felix grasping for the stars at the end made me shed a tear. So it goes.

So, I started watching this series, got to episode 14, am hooked, but accidentally moused over a major spoiler upthread. Specifically, I found out that (MAJOR SPOILER) Yang dies in Episode 82. I'm pissed at myself, but do you guys think it's worth continuing to watch with this knowledge?

It is unfortunate that that happened but that character is hardly the only memorable one in the show and it would be a huge disservice to set aside all of the other great parts and storylines because of it.

What this guy said. It's a huge, sprawling, lengthy show with lots of cool characters and stories. And it's an event that happens so late in the series, while you've barely scratched the surface, you'd be missing out on so much great stuff. Besides, the true star of the show is Reinhardt - everybody else is just an expendable secondary character.

With regards to the spoiler above: it seemed pretty obvious to me that Yang would die at some point - the show was setting Julian up as his successor since the very start, and I also suspected that the lack of "talk to the camera" moments from him meant that he must have died before the events of the show became "historical fact". In spite of that I still found the manner of his death very surprising and sad.

In that episode and like the episodes after it the narrator pummels it into your head that "history continues". Yes yang is deadbut the dudes are still in a situation that needs work, and so they keep working. History is not driven by individuals, it's driven by a lot of things. Yang also says similar things earlier in the series - he talks to Julian about how terrorists can kill individuals but can't change the overall flow of history.

LOGH is the story of humanity and the characters in the show are really just mere footnotes in an endless debate between competing ideas. Empires will rise and fall, people will live, love and die and humanity will always find a friend in alcohol. So yeah just keep watching.

The last chapter thing of war and peace where Tolstoy tacks an essay on the end of the novel talks about similar things. War and peace is a story about a bunch of different russian families during the events leading up to and during napoleons invasion of Russia in 1812 and so Napoleon is a "character" in it or whatever, but Tolstoy was of the opinion that history is not moved by *one man alone*, and LoGH holds the same views I think, though it's narrative perspective is from the "prime movers" as opposed to random schmucks in W&P. I believe that you can see this in the way they both portray the "prime movers", i.e. Yang/Reinhart or Napoleon, in the shop structure of the story. They're important sure but they are not the only actors on the stage.

LoGH is arguably my favorite anime solely because of the huge amount of eminently quotable pieces. When Admiral Bucock steps out of retirement for the last time, it's abundantly clear what he is intending to do and what it will mean for him. I seriously cannot help but weep whenever I watch that episode, where he's watching the sunset over Heinessen and thinking back to his happy retirement with his wife, because I know precisely what's coming after. The foreknowledge of what's to come doesn't diminish what comes before it, but simply changes our perceptions of it.

Really, its the basis of most tragedies that the protagonists are likely to not survive or at least come to a positive end; It's the journey from the start of the story to the climatic points with that vague knowledge of eventual misfortune that is so effective at illiciting emotional response

Also Bucock. His death scene was easily one of the most memorable moments for me, maybe even more so than Yang's. I suspect he may have been partly based on Ferdinand Foch. An old soldier of the Republic who started out as a private and served all the way up to marshal and commander in chief, assuming supreme command after others have failed. Though maybe I'm just seeing things.

I'm probably watching this at a slower pace than anyone ever. I started it like almost a year ago and am only on episode 30. I absolutely loving love the show, so it's not that I'm not enjoying it. I don't exactly know why I'm taking so long, I just watch a couple of episodes and then keep taking huge breaks before I jump back in. I think I'm kind of afraid that it's either I do this, or I marathon it in like a few days, and I really don't want to do that because I enjoy it so much. I want to let myself have time to breath and reflect between episodes. Anyway, episode 26 was pretty shocking. I didn't expect that to happen so soon. I mean, I totally knew it was coming, but not that early in the series. It's kind of gotten me worried for other characters I adore. Reinhardt is lost as gently caress without his best bro, and is getting really vindictive. I don't know how he's gonna get it together again, or who would even be capable of wrangling him and tempering his sadistic and vindictive side like Kircheis was. Yang Wenli is the greatest anime character, or just character period ever. I loving love his attitude, his mannerisms, his voice, everything. He is just such a fantastic character and nothing better happen to him ever or I will be really loving sad and angry. The idea of a space-opera with battles and action ranging from naval style light years wide spaceship combat scored with amazing classical music, all the way down to dudes in spacesuits fighting with axes is the greatest thing ever. It's something I never knew how much I wanted until I discovered it. Even though I'm only like 1/4 the way through the series I have been trying to get everyone I know to give it a shot. Unfortunately almost everyone I have recommended it to is a loving moron who hates the mere mention of the word anime, even though this series barely even resembles people's ideas of a stereotypical anime. And even if I could get them past that, most are incapable of watching something with subtitles. This is one Anime that really, really would be awesome to have real life people to watch, share, and discuss with, so it really sucks I've only got myself (and the internet) to experience it with. . I actually haven't watched a ton of anime in my life, maybe about 7-8 complete series, all of which which have been fantastic and well regarded. I'm kind of worried that watching LoGH this early in my anime watching times is going to spoil me against any series I watch after. I mean, can any other anime even approach the greatness of this show? I almost regret watching what seems to me to be peak anime before I have seen much other series. Hopefully I will still be able to enjoy other poo poo when I finish it. Anyway, maybe I should throw on an episode...it has been about 2 weeks since I saw the last one... edit: vvvv Yeah, all episodes are subbed. Seems like it has been for a long time now. Like years. Forgive me if it's been answered, I don't want to dig through the thread for fear of spoilers: Are all 110 episodes subbed now? I've only got 10 episodes left of the epic I've been watching and Legend of Galactic Heroes is next in queue, but I don't want to start an unfinished series.

What's been the experience for posters in this thread wrt getting people to watch the show? I tried getting some of my anime watching friends to check it out and they pretty much hated it.
