South Dakota has had the standard ugly blue-background-with-yellow-seal design for the longest time, and the design on top was proposed a few years ago as a replacement. Unfortunately no one went for it.

If Scotland ever gains independence I hope it's on the condition that the UK keeps it's flag. All the alternatives are superbly ugly.

Can anyone recommend a good book on the history and design of flags? Something that goes through how various flags were put together, meanings behind them, when they're used, etc? I can never seem to find anything good vexillogical books anywhere.

To me it looks like the ultimate "white power world" flag, between the compass rose and the sun cross symbol that neo nazis love to use along with the Celtic cross, etc.

The Norwegian Nazi party Nasjonal Samling used a golden sun cross on a red background as its official symbol. Various white nationalist and Neo-Nazi groups use the sun cross; the Knights Party also uses it in their official flag.

The star is adapted from the Sunburst on the old flag and the circle in the middle is apparently supposed to be a representation of the Lakota medicine wheel:

But I can see how it goes the other way. :ohdear:

Fun fact, the flag (and the motto) used to say "The Sunshine State" until Florida had it instead. Because it makes perfect sense for a state that's cold as gently caress for 6 months of the year to have that name.

Updating this to include the coat of arms that I've chosen for myself:

Murrey, semy bees or

What another heraldist did up using the common purple/red mixture for Murrey:

I changed it to what Canadian heraldry depict Murrey as:

He revised it to what a design program calls "maroon":

I think that the bees from the stock images he used look too much like horseflies (Interesting Fact: Pope Urban VIII's family coat of arms originally was 3 horseflies, but as the family became "more noble" the charges did too, and so the flies were upgraded to bees), but it was nice of him to whip up.

I like it, and I'm glad that taking a step back from the process helped me to cement my ideas. This thread got me back to thinking about it, so thanks!

There was another one that had a "label" on it, denoting the son-and-heir of the guy with the underwear on his shield. So that no one gets confused and thinks that HE is Sir Underwear, Sr.

Also that horse is more anatomically accurate than most charges.

wtf hax???
The city I live in right now, Kansas City, has a flag. That's all I can say. It's got a flag.

The city logo itself is the fountain design in the middle in this cute blue to magenta gradient that I like.

My hometown of Joplin MO doesn't have a flag, nor does my family have a crest. Or, we do, most likely somewhere, as it was a pretty well-off Italian family way back in the 1600s. There's a small group of family members both in the states, Italy, and Argentina I know trying to do family research and they recently found what looked like a family crest, but it honestly looks like it was just designed quickly based off of pre-existing family crests through some generator. Could totally be wrong though.

Is it Canton or Canting? I think a Canton is the "badge" part of a shield, like the blue-with-stars part of the US flag...

ENFORCE THE UNITED STATES DRESS CODE AT ALL COSTS!

This message paid for by the Men's Wearhouse& Jos A Bank Lobbying Group
There is no state flag worse than my native state's. I give you the state flag of New Hampshire:

Is that the "USS New Hampshire?" I hear you ask? Nope. It's the USS Raleigh, one of the original 13 frigates of the Continental Navy. Not surprisingly given the general shittiness of the flag the boat wasn't even built in New Hampshire, it was built across the river in Maine. Though the shipyard was at least owned by a New Hampshire man.

Well that ship must have been pretty important right? Nope. It was captured by the British a whole 2 years after she launched when she ran aground. It's even run-aground on the flag! And then the British liked the design so they reversed engineered it for their ships and then sold it 5 whole years after she was launched.

Literally the stupidest loving thing the state legislature could have come up with. Why they haven't replaced it with the Old Man of the Mountain (may he rest in pieces) I have no idea.

That said, I'm also partial to my adoptive state flag, Iowa. Which features an eagle with a broken neck holding up a meaningless platitude:

To be less sarcastic, I've always thought the USSR's flag was badass
