The Van Gogh episode had a similar problem, where there was clearly only a monster because There Has To Be A Monster.

I give that one a pass because every other part of the story is incredible. I do wish the monster had turned out to all be in his head though since that was kind of the point, that he was struggling with his own depression.

The whole new series has hammered home that the Doctor wasn't some bystander or last remaining watcher of things, he was a soldier in the Time Wars and Eckleston, Tennant and Smith all make mention of that. Now, Capaldi suddenly forgets that he was on the front lines himself? Way to poo poo all over your own storylines you jerks.

Maybe he hasn't forgotten. Maybe he really, really, really hates his War Doctor incarnation. The Doctor has a history of sometimes not liking his other selves (really shown in The 5 Doctors).

That episode wasn't quite as good as this one, but it had the same "problem" where the interactions between Doctor, companions and other humans is really strong and interesting and the requisite alien menace stuff is not only sidelined but poorly executed to boot.

True. I wonder if they will ever do a pure character episode, with no actual Threat whatsoever. (Maybe they thinking there was a Threat, but it turned out to be a squirrel or something. And I don't think Edge of Destruction would qualify.)

I had a real hard time buying the doctor hating this guy. He's never seen him do any soldier things, acted entirely reasonably up to their inexplicable tardis shouting match and is vouched for by his trusted companion/best friend. I guess he did foil the doctor's plan by not ignoring the inconspicuous blinking time bombs he planted all over a school

Maybe the doctor knows that Danny Pink is destined to go on to become a notorious warlord in post apocalyptic London but doesn't want to crush Clara by warning her

Technically speaking in The Crimson Horror too, where the villain is definitely the human being running the show, and all the technical innovations are down to her and her alone. The little parasite-leech thing IS a "monster" but it's utterly passive and served only as a focus for her madness that she would have found in something else if she hadn't encountered it.

What about Turn Left? As I recall, the "monster" took up about 2 seconds of the episode and was more accurately termed "a technobabble plot device." The plot would have worked exactly as well if the explanation was "The TARDIS malfunctioned and rewrote Donna's history. oops"

Not that it wouldn't be really cool, but did Ian and Barabara even know The Doctor could regenerate? That might take some splainin.

(Granted taking 3 seconds to show him the pretty blue bigger on the inside police box would rectify that instantly).

I don't care what Capaldi, Coleman, and Moffat say, even if that isn't what they're trying to do with the character (it is) that's definitely the way it comes across. The first 15 minutes of this episode were great because they finally allowed Capaldi to give the character some characterization that wasn't "friendzoned redditor". I mean goddamn.
To be honest, I thought they were doing a similar thing here, with the Doctor actually being sorta in a love with her and angry for being ignored, but the reveal at the end that he was actually more concerned with Pink being 'not good enough' for Clara was great. He's really acting more like a father than a boyfriend, and that made his behavior far more palatable for me.

The grumpy, bickering, fairly rude Doctor is really making me laugh. His utter obliviousness to Clara is a decent source of comedy and fits in decently with the series as a whole. Here's hoping they will focus on telling adventure stories and gadding about the galaxy instead of writing more drivel like this week and the season opener.
I'm not even finding the Doctor's personality quirks all that funny, because it really is sitcom-level stuff - a long-running sitcom where a character's traits have been magnified and caricatured to a ridiculous degree, like Kramer's money-making schemes in Seinfeld or Joey's stupidity in Friends. The Doctor thinks Danny's a PE teacher! Ha ha! And he says it again, and again, and again, and a-loving-gain, and people keep correcting him, and still he keeps saying it. Did it turn out he was doing it on purpose to be a dick? No, he was just being oblivious to someone he didn't care about. Hilarious.

The Doctor's always been able to drop into human (or whatever) society with no trouble before, so why are they pulling out the Mork & Mindy/Third Rock "BEEP BOOP I am an alien" bag of gags now?

I swear I remember reading something about Capaldi wanting the Doctor to really feel more alien than recent series, so it could be a manifestation of that.

Then again, Moffat said the same thing about 11 back when Matt Smith was new, and he turned out pretty relatable all things considered, so who knows.

I had to laugh when I realised that there is a Matt Smith impersonator working at school. No wonder the Doctor liked him so much! "The handsome one with the bow tie". It also felt like an (obvious) reference to the idea that the 11th Doctor liked Clara.

Good we finally got done with the introduction of Danny and the Doctor. While I understand why Clara wouldn't like to talk about her secret double life it still felt forced. I was thinking "Just tell him already!" the whole time.

Oh no!😱

Theres an advert on UK TV at the moment (I dont know if something similar is airing elsewhere but its Disney, so I assume so) for holidays at one of the disney parks. Probably Eurodisney. Its trying to encourage parents of teenagers to take them to Disney. Imagery like a teenage girl (who looks to be about 20 so I kind of assumed its an american ad with a new voiceover because US stuff always has teenagers played by 20 year olds) getting a text message from a boyfirend and then rolling over in bed to hug her teddy. Its marginally more subtle than having mickey shout "Feel like your children are growing apart from you and becoming adults and find that upsetting and scary? Remind them that they are still really children and buy their love back with a disney holiday!" directly down the camera, but only marginally.

That is kind of the vibe I'm getting from the doctor for the last couple of episodes. That was my interpretation of last episodes "Beat that for a date" line. Some people got "Jealous exboyfriend", but I got "How can she rather go the cinema with this boy than watch a DVD with the family? We took her to disneyland!".

I definitely get the "family" vibe as well. Though I'm quite pleased that some weeks he's the confused dad who can't understand why his little girl doesn't just look up to him with wide-eyed wonder anymore and is more interested in hanging out with some boy, and others weeks he's the slightly passive-aggressive kid who can't understand why his mom is hanging out with this new dude instead of devoting all her time to him.

Basically Clara seems to be in the growing apart stage of the Doctor/companion relation, and it kind of mirrors the 3rd Doctor/Jo relationship at the moment. Ironically, those old stories were 6 episodes long and yet Jo didn't start growing apart till her last ever story.

You do realise this is doctor who, right? Of course its not the afterlife and missy isnt god. I kind of assumed that went without saying. She is technobabbling their minds at the point of death in order to do something later in the season. The cop was given the afterlife explaination because hes a human from early 21st century earth, its probably easier for him to accept that than "Your brain is now in a computer because you died" or whatever the explaination turns out to be.

My guess: they're a couple of assholes with a teleporter and some way of following and watching The Doctor. The ultimate plan is to kidnap him, but in such a way that he doesn't realize he's been kidnapped. They can do this by acting like he's in the afterlife and introducing him to a bunch of people he "knows" are dead. The Master might try a plan like that because he doesn't want to kill The Doctor, he just wants to toy with and control him.

Wow, I really liked this episode. I agree that the alien threat was weak, but it wasn't the point of the episode. I really think Capaldi is going to end up being -my- Doctor, replacing David Tennant because all his performances are absolutely amazing. Also echoing the love for Danny Pink's exaggerated SAH YES SAH performance.

Something I noticed is that it's going for the same plot element that the Stolen Earth/Journey's End two-parter used, with the Doctor forging people into soldiers. Except doing it much better.

Yeah, it's really more "it's funny that they think they have to do this" than "oh my god that ruined an otherwise spectacular episode", for me.

In this last one, I thought the ludicrousness of the threat worked with the general tone of the episode. It needed to be just credible enough to give the Doctor a reason to hang around being weird and to not want to involve Clara for once, but not something that would overshadow the actual meat of the episode. Make the unpronounceable robot a malfunctioning Dalek (which is what it broadly was), and suddenly the episode is about "oh poo poo, there's a malfunctioning Dalek" and not "Clara's double life is unsustainable" or "Danny views everything, including Clara and the Doctor, through the lens of his own trauma" or whatever.

That said, I think what you said before, that it would have been better had the "threat" been some other sort of problem the Doctor had to solve rather than a rampaging alien menace he was trying to head off, is a pretty good point.

Jsor posted:
