MrLonghair posted:It's really predictable but I don't mind Buddy Complex Final Chapter. One of those things I could have playing on my second monitor while doing mini-games in Ishin and not miss anything of. It's unambitious as hell and I bet if they had to take an actual risk they'd rather poo poo their pants, but it's definitely watchable enough. It's very safe but that can translate into being okay. Though it did feel like they were working with a smaller budget or something since the animation didn't feel as slick as the tv series.

ViggyNash posted:On another note, I just finished binging Barakamon. I know Nozaki is the currently the ADTRW favorite among summer comedies but I think Barakamon might have been my favorite for the season, if not the year. I'd say it perfectly fits as the Silver Spoon replacement for the season, and it constantly made me think back to last year's Kyousogiga (if you haven't watched it, do so right now). It was adorable, heartwarming, and utterly hilarious. I had a smile on my face the whole way through some of the later episodes, a feat even Nozaki didn't manage. It's seriously one of my personal contenders for show of the year.

Nozaki and Barakamon are tied for show of the year in my heart. Heartwarming comedies are the best.

Nate RFB posted:Nozaki may have been funnier at times (Probably? Both were funny tbh), but Barakamon managed to be both hilarious and Tsuritama-levels of heart warming. It's definitely a top 5 of the year show in my eyes. Nozaki was more straightforwardly funny (teenagers being dumb as a basis for comedy never gets old) and Sabagebu was about how horrible a person Momoka was and how delightfully silly it was to watch her. Barakamon is another story altogether. And even though I really really liked it (and really, Sugita continues to be a national treasure), screw Tsuritama: Barakamon warmed my heart to Yotsubato levels. Especially because in May of this year I became a (step-)dad and, despite all the difficulties that it entails, it reminded me of how awesome it makes me feel for having that little, Naru-esque scamp in my life. It kinda made that revelation that I should stop referring to her as "my niece" and just straight up say that she's my daughter to all my acquaintances all the better. It also made me feel super moronic for being afraid of being a "dad" when she started calling me just that after a while. It was a special summer for this dumb goon, is what I'm trying to say.

Pretty much. I'm not blood-related to her mom in any way. She just started calling me uncle off the hook when she was 4 and her parents were okay with that. And now, after a few lovely years, she's in a better place living with yours truly.

Watching Terraformars ironically, waiting to see how bad the racist undertones become overtones. I can already tell this show is going places, based on how heavily they censored the bear fight. That was worse than any thing jojo censored.

Wow, I was going to post a link to my Seven Deadly Sins thread I made a while ago, but its already been archived. Ill have to repost it. I think the comic is really cool as far as your fighty shounens go so I hope the upcoming anime gets a little more interest sparked in the series.

A 3 episode test would give enough time for Meliodas to throw back Gilthunder's spear, right? Because that's what got me really interested in reading it further, and then it had a couple more cool moments like King, and then I was really hooked around either the end of the tournament or when ~Gowther~ was introduced. Making this post to say that if it does blow up, then I reserve the right to claim that I liked it before it was cool.

Yeah, for as much as I like the mecha designs, and as much as the music is going to own, the show has zero chance of being anything good. Chances are I won't even make it through the first episode, and I'll just wait for the soundtrack.

This whole thing is kinda reminding me of how people were talking about Ryuko getting raped in the first episode of Kill la Kill when that wasn't the case. At the end of the day all we have to go on for the moment is a single person writing about it on Kotaku so I'd rather wait for the episode to air proper to hear how it pans out instead of preemptively getting up in arms about it.

Squidster posted:While I'm not going to deny that Kotaku sometimes sensationalizes things, I want to highlight that the review author wasn't bothered by the show's little sister incest. If the intent was 'SJW outrage', as you're implying, then that's where the author would have started. The writer pretty carefully explains the point here. They talked about a scene in the second episode where a villainous character touches his little sister's lips in a deliberately creepy fashion, and said that this is fine in terms of establishing that character's villainousness. quote:He strokes her lip, saying that they must keep the bloodline clean. It's subtly unsettling and non-explicit. This is contrasted with the scenes in the earlier episode which show sexual assault as the camera is focused on the female character's panty-clad butts. One is about exploiting sexual assault for the purpose of titillation, one is implying a character is hosed up in the head but shows nothing.

However, given that this season has a lot of very promising looking shows, both manga adaptations and original work, it's pretty easy to dismiss a show with this kind of press as just hot garbage. The previews made it look infinitely generic, and after reading the review it makes the decision to skip it effortless. Good on ya Kotaku, a win in the journalism column.

Yeah, it's important to note that something can be intentionally creepy while still being really gross fanservice. I've had the displeasure of seeing screenshots of an infamous scene from KLK that was supposed to be something vile within the story (I'm hoping) but was still shot like pornography. In any event, nobody watch Cross Ange, everyone listen to the soundtrack once that's available because Akiko Shikata is great. HMS Boromir fucked around with this message at 21:58 on Sep 30, 2014 |
