Because $400+ seems really excessive, especially since it looks like at the official Nintendo site for their card sets they're only $20 or so (2000 yen). Has to be markup, I bought my Napoleon President deck from Amazon and it was around $20. They also have the Mario deck for $45 but I doubt it's worth it

Gals Panic is fun as poo poo, at least some of them. Most of the Kaneko games listed in MAME as "expose" games, anyway. There is even at least one that is non-porny. So much better than Qix from a gameplay perspective though, they are surprisingly frantic and tactical games sometimes. Gotta get those power ups, collect phone numbers? and EXTRA coins and get 100%! It's pretty challenging stuff sometimes. Protip for new players, try and keep the boss on the black part of the screen, wall them in and hope they don't break through.

Retrogame supernoob question: I just bought copies of Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat II for SNES, PAL version. When I start them up I see a green screen, that flickers to black a few times and then is just green. Other games work fine. Tried cleaning the end of the cartridge with a q tip and alchohol solution. Any ideas on what to do to fix this?

The flickering like that indicates bad contact between the system and the cart. You might need to use something like Brasso to give them a real scrubbing. Also, you guys play your Porn Qix, I'll just stick with Volfied/Super Qix, thank you very much.

Use an eraser on the contacts if alcohol and Brasso doesn't work, then go over it once more with alcohol. You'll probably have to take the cart apart to do this. I just got an NES mainboard working again by doing this after trying multiple carts/connectors on it.

Well, I beat Conker's Bad Fur Day. Fun game. I think held up pretty well for the most part. I didn't really care for the swimming sections though. Those were just the worst. Probably start up Perfect Dark tomorrow. In other news I ordered a copy of Mother 2 for the Super Famicom because my Earthbound cart ended up completely broken and unplayable a few months back. I ordered Mother 2 because it was about 180 dollars less than buying another physical copy of Earthbound, plus I have Earthbound on the Wii U's virtual console so it's not like I can't play it or anything.

Mednafen question: How do I resize the screen? I know that's pretty basic, but I've never used Mednafen before and I'm pretty stonewalled with the interface and the info I've been able to find so far. I'm using MedGui, and I have gone into Advanced Mode to try changing the resolution from "Desktop" to other presets, but it doesn't change anything in actual practice. I still end up playing TG-CD games in a postage stamp: Alt-Enter to fullscreen just puts the postage stamp in the center of the screen, surrounded by a sea of black. I also tried changing the pce.xscale and pce.yscale values from 1 to 3, just to see if it would change anything (the hope was that it would stretch the window to 3x its size), but no. Any advice?

Uncle at Nintendo posted:That's a very fair price considering I think it took me like 5 hours to install the NESRGB (2 hours removing the drat PPU). I haven't noticed anything specific on my PVM, I'll up the brightness and see if anything shows up. Usually wavy lines in the picture means the power cap is starting to go, but that should show up in all video modes.

I have a 3DO FZ-1 with a busted CD drive. I disassembled everything and found a gear with a crack in it. Specifically, it's a gear that drives the laser assembly up and down its tracks. The crack makes the gear stick, so the laser can't move and discs can't be read. A user on the 3DO Zone forums made this graphic. The problem is, we don't know where to source a replacement for this gear. And honestly, I have no idea what search terms to use to find such a thing. Anyone have any idea what this is called? (Or better yet, have a part number??)

I lurk this thread but don't have much to offer because I ebayed all my retro stuff years ago. In fact, since the d-pad on my Logitech USB controller went out about a year ago, I haven't even played any games at all. So I browse youtube for my fix. Figured I'd share some of the channels I subscribe to that have good playthroughs. Replay Burners. Great channel with tons of games, mostly arcade, but there are some console titles here and there. I like this one the best for two reasons: 1) the runs are done by actual experts at the game, from what I can tell. Deaths and whatnot are left in for a more genuine experience. 2) They use that blended-frame technique to give the illusion of a smoother framerate. Some games really pile on the flicker effects, so this allows you to see more, at the expense of a bit of blur. YMMV on this kind of visual. They also have a secondary account (RB Video Library) that has a few bonus games. World of Longplays. They have a fuckton of stuff across all systems past and present, but a lot of older-generation stuff suffers in quality due to the 30 FPS cap. No blended frames here. Also, apparently the runs are tool-assisted when possible, which is less fun to watch, IMO. SaikyoMog. Just a dude who posts full video walkthroughs (sans commentary). I think I remember reading he's got some kind of terminal illness so he makes these to pass the time. Has lots of time-consuming runs like RPGs and whatnot. HCBailly. This is more of a Let's Play thing. While a lot of non-SA Youtube LPers are absolutely terrible, this guy isn't bad. His enthusiastic commentary might be off-putting to some, but I enjoy it. He's pretty good at explaining what's going on. Also, he does his homework on the games - lots of sidequests and secrets and stuff. All videos are in small bite-size chunks of 20 minutes or so. I think he records/uploads one every day in the morning. Seahawk0027. I watch mostly for his shmup vids, some of which are played on the highest difficulty to show off I guess. Has games in other genres as well. This run of Gradius III arcade is amazing recovery and success on the last stage on the next-to-last life, I highly recommend it.

The best explanation I've heard is that the Kyo and Iori characters were insanely popular, and girls wanted to go to the arcades to watch them "compete"? Hopefuly someone with a better understanding of the metascene can explain this? It seems like it's not that simple.

Yes, particularly in China, Taiwan etc. I think the entire explanation is "SNK draws attractive dudes". Apparently there is an enormous fanfiction/yaoi culture surrounding the series. EDIT: I don't think this applies to the USA at all though, aside from probably a very small niche. EDIT2: I read that in China specifically there are really strict regulations on certain things like yaoi manga but as the Neo-Geo is so easily bootlegged and KOF is everywhere people just started using the games as a stand-in somehow. It was a really long time ago so I'm sure I have the details confused. d0s fucked around with this message at 09:36 on Oct 3, 2014 |
