I thought the reason Marvel went with unknowns/has-beens like Downey was that they required them to sign insane 6-picture commitments, because the Marvel universe concept/using heros like Iron Man and Thor was kind of a longshot at the time. Its been a runaway success so it doesn't seem nearly as risky now, so they could get bigger names.

True, but they'd still want them for extended contracts presumably. Anyone big enough to have a good choice of roles (and no immediate threat of poverty) might be wary of a commitment like that.

Downey wasn't a has-been. He was actually doing pretty well at the time, just not one of the biggest actors in the world like he was post-Iron Man.

Besides that, I have no idea why people think that Marvel only casts unknowns because... they don't.

He had Zodiac, but otherwise he was still firmly in "comeback" territory until Iron Man made him a superstar again.

"Unknowns" is harsh, but besides Scarlett, most of the actors they got were not A-list.

You have more fun as a follower. But you make more money as a leader.

I'd say Ruffalo and Renner are pretty close to A-list, Hemsworth is the only one I'd describe as a total unknown.

I dunno, I saw Ruffalo as purely a romantic comedy guy, and Renner's been in good movies, but the only A-list thing he's done is the Bourne sequel which didn't seem to be well received. Also those guys joined after Iron Man and Captain America had succeeded, lending credibility to the Marvel connected universe.

Ruffalo and Renner are not A-list or "close to A-list". Clooney, Pitt, Damon, and DiCaprio are A-list.

What even is the argument here? It is silly to say Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner were unknown. Both of them had Oscar nominations by the time they were cast in The Avengers. They only person who wasn't known was Hemsworth, and apparently he was well-known to Australians.

Renner starred in a movie that won an Oscar for Best Director. It's not Best Picture, but it's still one of the big 4.

edit: Nevermind, it apparently won Best Picture too

All you need to know about Renner's star rating is when he was nominated for "The Hurt Locker", that year at the Oscars, each nominee had a famous co-star they had worked with tout their abilities on-stage.

Renner's?

Colin Ferrell.

Hurt Locker also had the lowest box office of a Best Picture winner since at least the late 70s, and the difference between it and the next lowest film isn't even close.

This feels like a discussion that the characters in High Fidelity would have. Except not about music. It's the sort of discussion where a film about a crazy taxi driver rescuing a child prostitute for all the wrong reasons is considered a predictable, mainstream choice.
