Happy Noodle Boy posted:Regarding the throttling: I hit the 5GB soft-cap and get throttle every single month. For browsing (awful app), music streaming (iTunes radio) and directions (maps/waze) it is a non-issue and I've never seen the limited connection be an issue to/from work and home. I have wifi at work so I never "see" the throttle... How low does it throttle down to?

So if I switch from my grandfathered unlimited to the new data pool with my family plan, there's no more phone subsidies? Is that right?

pzy posted:So if I switch from my grandfathered unlimited to the new data pool with my family plan, there's no more phone subsidies? Is that right? Not quite. Main difference is that you can choose to not take the $15 or $25 a month subsidy if you want. Old school plans don't have that option, so bringing your own phone makes no sense.

Even if a two year contract ends up being cheaper, the bill goes up when you get a phone. The plans are usually better because of said flexibility on no contract pricing vs contract pricing.

I just posted about this in the iPhone thread, but since it's looking like an AT&T issue, I'm posting here as well. I've been having an issue that I first noticed on my iPhone 6, but have also seen on a 5s and iPad Air. When loading pages with lots of images over cellular (with LTE enabled or disabled), many of the images on the page won't load completely or at all. Safari then caches these incomplete images, so that they still do not load if the page is refreshed. The only way to see those images is to completely reset Safari. The main menu of the Netflix app is also affected. One of the most obvious examples I've come across is this page, which looks like this for me: I'm in central Florida, and am curious if other AT&T users are seeing anything similar in other areas. I've submitted this through the Mark the Spot app and get nothing but automated messages telling me alternatingly that they are aware of an issue and that the issue has been resolved, though I have yet to see an improvement.

The only things the 3 devices I'm having an issue with have in common are their location, the cellular network they're using and the version of iOS they're running. Of all the things I've seen people complaining about with iOS 8/8.0.2, this problem hasn't been one of them. It doesn't happen on wifi. It does happen on cellular. What else could be the cause?

I have a 12% discount through my employer but it looks like it isn't being applied correctly. Excluding charges and my Next installments, my bill is $40 (plan) + $50 ($25 x 2 phones). Doesn't that mean I should be seeing a discount of $10.80 ($90 x 12%). My discount is only $4.80 EDIT: I just realized that the discount literally only applies to the plan. I can't believe that is the case.

Got throttled today on grandfathered unlimited, with 5 days left in my billing cycle. I really hate AT&T, and they sure have me by the balls. I need to look more into this 30 GB shared data promotion, but I am convinced it will end up costing me more money, and I'm still not sure what a new iPhone would cost me in 2 years.

Throttling killed unlimited data for us. We gave in and switched to pooled data with a family plan with the promotional double data thing. 80GB between five iPhones (we blow through a lot of data, don't ask) for the same price as before, plus tethering enabled at no charge so I can get rid of my separate hotspot.

Hey! I have an unlocked smartphone with a gophone plan (the $40 one). I ran out of minutes, and got a message saying every additional minute would be 10 cents. However when I try to make a call it says I need to refill. Why won't it let me make calls at the additional charge?

Does anyone know how much I could get for my wife and I's old AT&T iPhone 5? She has a 32gig and I have a 64gig, both are in flawless pristine condition. I know they were doing a trade in promotion when the 6 launched but I wondered what they are offering now?

-edit ^ drat that's not a bad deal. May see if the local AT&T is doing it So I have an iPhone 5 that's out of contract so AT&T should unlock it. If I get a 6 there's no way AT&T would unlock it for temporary overseas use, correct? I know there's international plans and such but those are always a rip off Might just get the 6 and keep my 5 around until I get back Nostalgia4Dogges fucked around with this message at 21:46 on Oct 5, 2014 |

Is there any hope of my brother being able to get away with using an old BlackBerry on the AT&T networks? He used a t-mobile BB and got away with it, till he broke it. Bringing an unlocked one worked for a bit but they eventually charged him. He was using it for about 5 years. He says he is paying for internet now but the speed sucks, it might be on EDGE. His friends are trying to get him an iPhone 5.

And no, on the old plan data plans are required, so if he is crazy enough to keep the BBerry he should just switch to the mobile share 300MB plan (since BBerrys don't use much data) and have a lower cost anyway.

Does AT&T have any reliable way of reporting areas of dead service? The airport where I work has terrible signal even though it is right near a large industrial park. It is basically impossible to make a call without it being dropped at least once. I know there is even more buildings expanding around the area and there is going to be an air show out there this year. My only way of reliable communication is iMessage with Wifi from the office. I know I am not the only one with this problem either, all the people coming through there report terrible service.

So there's no way I can upgrade from the 5 to 6 without jacking up my bill from $150~ to $200~. Going from the 4 to the 5 was easy, paid the $200 (or whatever it was) fee for the phone and my plan stayed the same, my monthly payment stayed the same, but now they want to gently caress me and/or drive me to another carrier. If I was to pay for the phone upfront I lose some sort of discount I now qualify for and am receiving. The other option is to spend 600 spread out of two years for a device that will lose half its value in 6 months. This is infuriating.

So I picked up my brother (who lives outside of the US for most of the year, but still retains a line for the couple weeks he's back in the USA per year) a AT&T locked iphone 6 this past week, and after speaking with 1st level support, it seems that they aren't able to unlock devices anymore for international travel. Is there any way to unlock the phone to use global sim cards? I asked about just straight paying off the phone, but they still require a 2 month period before they can even do that. My online request for unlocking was auto-denied.

davecrazy posted:So there's no way I can upgrade from the 5 to 6 without jacking up my bill from $150~ to $200~. You're on the mobile share plan, which is no contract. You get a reduced rate for not signing a contract. Therefore, if you sign a contract, your rate will go up because your lowered plan does not include a phone discount. The old plans were more expensive to pay for the phone (since it isn't $200, it's $650). So basically, you have always been paying for the full cost of the phone, sorry to break the news. Every carrier literally now does plans this l, so if you don't want to do a plan like this I have more bad news for you.

But the good news is this:davecrazy posted:The other option is to spend 600 spread out of two years for a device that will lose half its value in 6 months. ...is pretty pessimistic. You're buying an iPhone, not Samsung's shittiest featurephone "smartphone." Up until the iPhone 6 was officially announced, iPhones 5 were still selling for more than half of their retail price. Two full years after they were introduced.

You can get, right now, $400-450 on eBay for an unlocked GSM 5S 32GB in decent shape. Around half retail when it was new. That's why everyone is eager to do trade-ins, AT&T offered me $300 for mine, that's serious extra profit when they ship it off to China to be resold.
