Excuse the phone pictures, but I've finally got an update of my new fish. Last week I added 5 panda cories and a one-eyed cory I can't identify. One-eye isn't a panda, but I didn't want to leave him behind where he would never get a chance, so he's my rescue. Excuse all the algae. The large plant in the back is red ludwigia and it looks amazing. Wonderful red and pink leaves. I've got two swords flanking the ludwigia and a bit of micro sword and baby tears for the foreground.  Here is One-Eye and his empty socket.  Two of my pandas. I've got dwarf baby tears up front as well as a sprinkling of micro sword that are finally coming in.  My betta, Ridick. He's black with streaks of blue and grey fluorescence. He's stunning and it is a shame I don't have a better camera to capture his coloring.   I got 30 Malaysian trumpet snails a few weeks ago. I think I have one hundred now.

I finally outsmarted my goldfish. I took water bottles and cut them into little buckets with holes in the bottom and hung them from the sides of my tank with wire. Plants stay submerged, roots stay protected, I get to have my "planted tank"... Fimmion Rockeater is pissed that he can't rip up the plants and clog up his filter anymore.   Water is cloudy because I was spilling substrate and gravel everywhere and the pothos is sad because we've been going through a heat wave and it's seriously hot in my room. It's starting to perk up again though, and the waters cleared up.

Dudes, I've had a horrible green algae problem for weeks now: I have tried cutting down on light, I have done massive water changes, I have tried cutting down on food, and it just will not go away. I'm thinking at this point I may just have to resort to chemicals. Someone, please let me know if there's anything else I can try before resorting to that drastic measure.

Is the titular runaway snail infestation actually something to worry about? Because I have a shitload of small white snails in my aquarium right now, and unless it's actually a problem (bioload, eating plants?) I can live quite well with those guys. I put in a half assed experimental snail trap (marmalade jar with zucchini) but its effectiveness might just be due to random chance of snails crawling all over the place. I'll have a control jar without zucchini tonight.

My parents' tank is ready for Halloween! This was a betta tank I setup for them about a year ago. A couple weeks ago my dad decided to add a couple tetras from petsmart. They died a week later, and left the betta in bad shape, clearly on his way out. No visible signs of disease, water params were good, so I put in some tetracycline (thinking it might be n internal bacterial infection)for them and hoped for the best. Betta died a day later, and the tank has been sitting empty for a few days now. It appears tetracycline occasionally turns water red. That was a new one for me.

Tetracycline can be some good stuff, but yeah that's some funky poo poo. I didn't know that it could stain water - it can also permanently stain adult teeth while they develop, so humans shouldn't take it from the second trimester through 8 or 9 years old. For fish porn content, have a shot of the CPO tank. Gotta get some of that fern off the coir and on the mopani and do something with that moss.

It's part of what makes them such great cleanup for the tank really, because they multiply to match their food source. If you're overdoing they will let you know in a hurry.

My original infestation got under control quickly with less food...and that rear end in a top hat Chinese algae eater getting to a few. So I need a bit of stocking advice. I have a 120l/30g tank and I'm trying to get a good fit of fish for it. Currently I'm looking at: 10x Neon Tetra 6x Julii Corys 3x Amano Shrimp 2x Golden Oto 1x Kribensis 1x German Blue Ram AqAdvisor says that should be good with my filter and tank size and there don't appear to be any compatibility problems. I tried to get a balance between cleanups, shoalers and centerpieces. Anyone got any thoughts or comments?

I feel like their numbers have exploded since I've started using Seachem Excel and gotten more algae to grow, which they feed on mostly. I guess I'll just clean out some of the little dudes every day and see where it goes if there is no immediate risk of them loving up water chemistry.

They won't gently caress the water unless a bunch die at once. They're just an annoyance when they get in huge populations and find their way into everything including the filter and your room carpet. Your best bet under your circumstance would be to find a fish that loves eating snails.

I assume the sarcasm about the Daphnia is due to the fact that my fish will very quickly eat up each and every last one as soon as they are introduced?

I was walking my dog through a swamp yesterday and found this shell:    The fibers are from the q-tips I used. I was hoping someone could give me an idea of how old it is(I live in Eastern Ontario)and how to clean it. I used tap water, paper towel, and q-tips, but a chemical that won't damage it would be handy, though I'll go the slow way if I have to.

Boiling it for a few minutes should eliminate any contaminants. It should also loosen or remove any algae. Anything that is left could be cleaned off with an old tooth brush.

Has anyone kept a marbled headstander before? I came across some today and I love the look, plus I could really use an algae eater. My tank is a 30 tall with a Betta and 6 cories. My main concern is the possibility of the headstander nipping the betta. http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/abramites-hypselonotus/ Edit poo poo. I'm looking over reviews of the fish and a lot of people are reporting destruction to plants and nipping, which I don't want. Will one fish be less trouble than a group? The problem with going a chemical route is that you're likely to have to keep doing it, because something is out of whack in your tank. If you've tried cutting the light periods down all together, have you gone the other way and tried CO2 to see if that gives your plant-plants an edge over the algae? Breaking up your light periods can also help I hear, but that may just be an old wives' tale.

Green algae like that only comes about if you have a massive nutrient load in a tank, and/or if your tank is subjected to direct sunlight. You can get rid of it with a UV sterilizer, but you should really investigate as much as possible to find out the root cause.

Earlier in the thread people were recommending the Python water changer. This looks neat, but is it safe to add the dechlorinator directly to the tank when you top it up? As stated before yep...totally safe. If you are super worried just do small water changes. Dechlorinator works pretty much instantly so just let it osmose for a minute or so and get to filling.

This was my project over the weekend. Picked up 3 40g breeders at the Petco $1/g sale, and a bunch of 2x4s to make a stand. It's overbuilt like crazy, and made to hold an eventual 8 foot tank down the line. For now I'm planning to just have two of the 40g side by side on it (the other 40g is a Christmas gift for my parents). Finished painting the tanks yesterday, and hope to get it all set up and running this weekend.
