True. It still seems like it is worse to me though, like there has been a sharp rise in apocalyptic thinking, where it isn't enough to make your point, or rebut the other person's points or reach some sort of conciliation with them. Instead they must be completely destroyed. And it seems like this really kicked up in the past 20 years between the appearance of Fox News segregating media sources, the millennium giving rise to "end of the world" thinking, 9/11 prompting "clash of cultures" thinking, and the rise of Dominionism in pop media and politics.

I don't know, maybe I'm talking out my rear end here, but it really seems like the idea that any disagreement is an attack on your person, and thus any disagreement must be eliminated has really sped up lately.

No, you're absolutely right - there's been a huge trend in disagreement being apocalyptic. I think a lot of it stems from the rise of mass media and commuter (and later Internet) culture; it's a lot easier to self-select your community these days and ignore your physical neighbors and focus instead on virtual neighbors who reinforce that your brand is the best brand and must never be questioned. Sure, there were papers for each political party in each city back in the day, but you still lived in a community and were involved in community activities (like bowling leagues or reading clubs or sewing circles or block parties) but those communities were locality-defined and so there was more of a chance that people would have very different political views and some level of tolerance needed to be developed.

An interesting way to think about it might be that back then, communities were ethnically and religiously segregated, which is why being "whatever"-American was so important ninety years ago but seems kind of pointless now: because the communities were politically diverse while ethnically similar, your brand was much more based on ethnicity than politics; now that people can make "communities of choice" guided by similar interests, brands are much more about politics and choices than they are about ethnicity.

These threads move too fast. What did Biden do now?

He said that the Syrian Civil War / ISIS situation is something that nobody wants to deal with. The U.S. didn't want to deal with it at all and even our allies in the Middle East didn't want to deal with it until it came to their doorstep. He said that Turkey and other Arab allies ignored the problem and gave an example of Turkey letting people cross its border because they didn't want to engage armed people who were on their way to Syria (not our problem!). Then he complained that our allies just gave weapons and money indiscriminately to any rebel group that opposed Assad and some of them were sympathetic to / became ISIS, so it is kind of their fault and they don't want to deal with the results.

Some of out Arab allies took offense to the implication that they didn't do anything, don't care, or want the U.S. to handle it for them.

Edit: Here's his actual quote.

quote:

He said countries like Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates were so focused on ousting Syrian President Bashar Assad that they did not properly vet the opposition groups to which they sent money and weapons.

"The Turks, who are great friends — I have a great relationship with Erdogan, whom I spend a lot of time with. The Saudis, the Emiratis, etc. What were they doing?" Biden said.

"They were so determined to take down Assad and essentially have a proxy Sunni-Shia war, what did they do? They poured hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of tons of weapons into anyone who would fight against Assad — except that the people who were being supplied were al-Nusra and Al Qaeda and the extremist elements of jihadis coming from other parts of the world."

Biden told the Harvard students that Erdogan had told him Turkey had erred in closing its porous border to foreign terrorist fighters. Erdogan said he never made such an admission to Biden.

This happens literally every time, it will not stop, the people who are assholes will continue to be assholes and no one is going to learn anything or change in a measurable way.

It's also a bad thing that SA of all places can't handle having a thread discussing the topic outside of the subforum that is literally named after a pile of poo poo. I'm just not about to personally go and make this specific thread the hill to die on.

I don't think this forum is majority black yet you are able to discuss racial issues openly. Yes trolls show up. The ferguson thread has more than a few. But the general D&D biome appears to have the requisite antibodies to deal with racist trolls.

How did you develop them? Why can't you utilize similar defenses against other troll clans?

Back to the original point, if Hillary wins the primaries the trolls will come regardless so coming up with a way to handle them would be wise preparation.

Something Awful is not a monolith, though. The subforum structure leads to different standards of posting and different cultures. SA is tribalistic, to be honest. Many posters only post in a single subforum, and those who do cross between the lines likely only post in a small number of forums, or perhaps in specific bookmarked threads outside their usual environment that pertain to their usual tastes.

So a typical GBS 2.0 poster, a typical D&D poster, and a typical Games poster (and the incident you cited I believe started in Games and then became a GBS/FYAD project) would have a number of differences.

Gay rights is the one thing Kennedy can be counted on for, and the four other conservatives didn't want to tackle the issue now, so it's a punt. When a few other states legalize gay marriage, they'll be able to rule on it with less pressure.

Women and men alike don't enjoy harassment, stalking, bad sportsmanship, or being hated for winning.

Women alone are subjected to the latter in certain types of games.

While I do agree that women have some unique experiences of truely terrible interactions which don't happen to men outside fringe cases (I saw some truely vile poo poo happen to some people who were outed as gay in wow) none of the things you listed are unique experiences for women. Gamer culture is toxic for everyone and is badly in need of something to fix it. I would say though that from my experiences playing wow its competitive play that brings out the true monsters. My guild on a non-pvp realm has a equal gender split, a wide range of ethnicities and even some sexual identity diversity. In the short time I raided on a pvp server everyone was a white male from 16-25 and awful in every concievable way. I think its less gaming and more losing and looking for a reason or some sort of solace that causes it.

It's gotten so bad that there are several games, including one of the biggest AAA games this year (Destiny), which have given up on automatic voice communication and switched to requiring mutual consent to be able to hear each other. It's getting blowback but I completely agree with this- the negatives of pervasive voice greatly outweigh the positives by now.

This is entirely true. And it doesn't just happen with MMOs or big FPSes either. I don't play L4D2 anymore because half the people I used to play it with became insufferable versus shitheels. They ranked regular players in tiers and would balance the teams based on how good some people were or how lovely others were. It kind of dragged the game down when you spent 5 or 10 minutes of the game swapping sides because "It's not fair we're gonna get steamrolled" as if points in the game actually mattered. I never cared if I lost or won, it was just about enjoying the game.

Whatever happened to just playing games because they're fun?
