Slowly revoke their titles, destroying the Kingdoms as opinion allows. It may take generations, but it will be well worth the headache. In the mean time set your chancellor and spymaster on scheme/improve relations duty to keep them out of factions.

Na it will just pass the emperorship down the line just like when any other cardinal inherits.
It would be fun to disable that part of inheritance, get all bishoprics being controlled by the pope...

So by the sound of it, hopefully viceroys seem like a fantastic way of sidestepping the problem of having to deal with King vassals. A vassal who holds your title yet has no claims to it, who tends to like you via the appointment of said position, seems fantastic. I feel that tech is probably what is going to limit its effectiveness.

In 1066, Seville (Abbadid Dynasty, I think), or the Zirid Dynasty in Tunisia (slightly harder start)

Spain is a good spot. Lots of smaller states in 1066 to choose from and easy Holy War targets to the north. I've had some fun with the Granada start in 1241 - you're flanked by potential allies (or expansion targets), and the Christians are still weak enough for opportunistic wars.

Speaking of alternate hosting for mods, though, CK2+ is now on the Steam Workshop (as of, literally, this evening) so those of you who like it now have one less reason to ever go to the Paradox forums.

It was actually pretty lame. He gave up his emperor-ship to become pope. I didn't approve so I pressed his claim on the HRE. Now he's the pope and the emperor. Of course, it was also a bad idea as the pope was originally my vassal. Now he has my land.

Goblin babies did nothing wrong.

And so this game continues to confuse.

I started up as Petty King of Sjaelland in the Old Gods start, so I could get the feel of playing a viking (figuring I already had most of the common mechanics down okayish). Everything is going fine - I've formed the Kingdom of Denmark, my king is 70, and I've got only one legitimate child who will inherit both Denmark and also the Petty Kingdom of Northumbria from my wife. Awesome.

Except spontaneously, my son is excluded from the line of succession. He goes back to third. He's definitely still capable of having children, he's fine, he's still alive. I'm not in any kind of elective succession - still Gavelkind. Now, the heir is for some reason my son-in-law (married into my family matrilineally, he was the bastard son of another King who had drat good stats so I poached him and made him marshall), who is set to inherit everything and end the game because he's not of my dynasty.

What could have happened? I'm not sure.

More importantly, how do I fix this fast because my king is 70. I can't assassinate him for some reason, the game won't let me (even though I don't have an active plot). Is reloading the only thing I can do?

Everything was going so well up until now. :saddowns: Loving the game, but sometimes it gets really confusing.

Okay, time to get another one of these out the way:

Rules for expanding through pressing claims.

A. Potential wars:
1. Claimant has a strong claim: you can always press that claim.
2. Claimant has a weak claim and is male: you can press that claim IF the current holder is female OR the current holder is under a regency (due to age, pilgrimage, prison,...) OR the title is already being contested.
3. Claimant has a weak claim and is female: you can press that claim IF the current holder is under a regency (due to age, pilgrimage, prison,...) OR the title is already being contested.

B. Rules for territory expansion:
When pressing a claim, the territory disputed will join your territory IF:
1. The claimant holds a title under your rulership, be that a kingdom, duchy, county or barony, as long as they hold a title under your wise rulership AND the contested title is lower than your current title (meaning you are a king: duchy or county, you are a duke: county) then their territory will join yours upon victory.
2. The claimant is of your dynasty AND the contested title is lower than your current title (meaning you are a king: duchy or county, you are a duke: county) then their territory will join yours upon victory.

All other cases the claimant will go independent upon victory or be a vassal to the liege lord of the contested title.

In the above example: you didn't land the duchess, you landed the duke; then pressed the duchess' claim. you should have landed the duchess and the pressed her claim. Unfortunately due to inheritance laws you probably couldn't give land to female rulers.

I've never tried this because I've been burned a bunch pressing claims for people outside my dynasty so hard that I don't even do it anymore, but just to clarify, you're saying you could basically find any claimant on a duchy you want (if you're a king), invite him to court, grant him a mayor spot for some new city you built, then press his claim on a duchy, and he'll be your vassal? What if he's a vassals vassal?

Yes, that's how it works

You can also breed them with dynasty members and then press the inherited claim, if the claim is inheritable

The only real downside is having someone control a county on one side of the empire and a city on the other side and eventually loving up the de jure dutchies

Yeah, but that takes a long goddamn time, because if you find a claimant who's older than 16, they're going to be married, so you have to assassinate their husband/wife, which often is only going to get one or two weak rear end people who you can pay enough to invite to the plot. So the only way to really be sure is to snap them up on a betrothal before their 16, and then wait for them to have kids and die. The way he's talking about, you could pick a duchy you want, and be pressing a claim on it the same day. You could expand so much quicker.

LOL, why the hell would he execute his own toddler daughter? Did she break the cookie jar?

An actually interesting piece of drama that happened in a recent game: My character's youngest son (age 5) was murdered on the orders of his oldest son and heir's (age 25) wife (because reasons, I guess?) Adding an extra layer of intrigue to the scenario was the fact that a few years before, my character had had, ah, shall we say... a period of indiscretion with said daughter-in-law, which has since ended and been kept secret by both parties--but which she may feel inclined to bring up at a trial for her life. And to boot, my character was known as "the Just" and renowned for his justice and honesty.

I actually paused the game and spent a few minutes pondering what from a roleplaying perspective this king would do in this situation.

Have her tried and executed? If so, lie to your court and dismiss her accusations of a prior affair as the rantings of a crazy woman? Or, as a man who has always prided himself on scrupulous honesty, acknowledge the truth of them and risk making permanent enemies of your wife and your heir?

Or to avoid having to make that choice, quietly arrange an "accident"? Sure, it violates the noble right of a trial before the king, but she definitely deserves it anyway, right?

And remember, he has to make this decision pretty quickly (because who knows what else she might be planning or who might be in it with her) and he has to do so under the extreme duress of having just learned your toddler son has been murdered.
