Two things: 1) Twisty the clown is the stuff that nightmares are made up. 2) Is anyone else getting a noir vibe from this or am I the only one?

Yeah it sounded pretty fake at first. She did pretty well last season. The anachronisms are interesting. I wonder if Pepper is really the same as the one we saw in Asylum.

If this is anything like Coven the reason for all this anachronistic music is that one of the freaks is a time traveler with an iPod. c'mon Ryan Murphy, ruin what you've got going.

Bates' accent aside, a great start. The clown fully makes up for all of Coven. My only concern is that we're going to get another season where all of the characters are bad guys and no one is sympathetic so you don't have a reason to care when someone gets put in danger / dies. Murderhouse had plenty of characters you wanted to cheer for. Asylum had 2 or 3 people who weren't completely evil. Coven was full of psychos and irredeemable sociopaths. Except Misty Day of course

Jesus loving Christ they started with the weird sex poo poo not even halfway through the first episode. Also the clown is loving nightmare fuel

Ok, I came in with some reservations because of Coven, but I liked this a lot. The audio mix was super off in that diner scene, but it seemed alright everywhere else. The camera work is great and it did a nice job of setting the tone as a period piece. I wonder how much of a pain in the rear end it is to film the scenes where Paulson actually has both heads in the shot at once. Add me to the pile of people who have no fuckin' clue what accent Bates is going for, though. It's definitely not any kind of southern. It sounded like a really bad Scottish accent at some points, and a really bad Canadian in others. One of the people I watched it with thought maybe some kind of Scandinavian? I just want to know what it is so I can figure out if it's a super lovely accent or a really good one that I've just never been exposed to.

I honestly think it might be supposed to be Pennsylvania Dutch or something similar. If I hear her say "Poconos" I'll know. It sounds kinda similar to some I hear in the suburbs around Philadelphia. Very distinctive, but hers is a little too overdone so it vacillates between Irish and surfer dude. "So now you're Mehewses leadin' the Isreelates?" E: I love what they seem to be doing with Lange this season. She's still tough as nails but she has a soft side that we haven't really seen since the last days of Sister Jude's story. There's some vulnerability that's great to see since she's spent 2.5 seasons as chainsmoking queen-bee alpha bitch. She's still on top but she has some serious heart behind it. Also the interplay between Sarah Paulson's heads is fantastic. I love that they are telepathic with each other. QuickbreathFinisher fucked around with this message at 05:51 on Oct 9, 2014 |

Those long O's are very familiar and it's driving me crazy. Maybe it's Dr. Evil, maybe it's something else. It does sound like rural Canadian, but in my head there is a character from something else that speaks in the exact same way. I'm sure it'll come to me. Meanwhile that was a fantastic premiere. Of course Coven had great visuals too, we can't forget. It's just when they tried to hold a plot that everything fell apart.

I thought Bates was supposed to be Irish (and not just because of the drunk tank.) Apparently we get to see what Twisty has behind his mask sooner rather than later, and it's so bad that crew members would leave between retakes.

When I saw that the little Indian lady had her own little knife in that scene I literally went 'daaaw' out loud. I don't immediately want anyone to die so far, so it's a lot better than coven at this point!

I don't know if it's late, but that episode confused the gently caress out of me. So Jessica Lange's character is a german war hero turned ringleader who got her legs blown off and, as a result, cannot fufill her dreams of big-time stardom and has settled for the center stage of her own freakshow. I assume the show is longer than we are shown, since the twins were supposed to be the main attraction, but they only lingered on each sideshow for a moment or two. But then I think I saw Lange watching from the audience, in no makeup? Is the show in her imagination? But then the mother and son apparently saw it so I guess not? And the candystriper from the hospital came to the address on the card and apparently got blown out on opium and got gangbanged? But then she says "I remember it...I loved it." and sits and watches it and doesn't leave horrified any more? Did I get all this? Holy good goddamn is that Michael Chiklis I saw in those credits? I'm super psyched for that. Coven was my first exposure to AHS and my friends absolutely loved it and I think they said it was the best season yet, but I hated it. I basically forced myself to finish it. I haven't had the chance to see Murderhouse or Asylum yet but I hear they're way better and this thread seems to agree. I'll give Freakshow a couple more episodes but if it doesn't grab me I'm just going to watch Seasons 1 and 2. I think one of the things that bothered me a lot about last season and I already see creeping up here is I find myself screaming at characters inside my head to not do some insanely stupid action. It takes me out of fiction when characters do things I feel like normal people would never do, because it serves the plot. Already in this first episode I had a few cases: -Milk Man not only not leaving immediately upon finding a dead body, but investigating upstairs with a blunt instrument, acknowledging that there's danger inside? -Detective "arresting" the twins by slapping cuffs on them and then walking to the other side of the room and talking more, then aggressively confronting multiple people inside their tent instead of just leaving and getting backup. I don't think they can move the entire setup before you can be back with a dozen more cops. I really want to like this show so we'll see. That was such a good episode that even though I had to watch it on the second playing because I was out, I find myself hanging around watching the third too. The only downside I can see is that once again, I'm watching a show that I can't mention on Facebook because every show I mention, my uptight in-laws try watching and freak out. It's like Hannibal all over again except worse because no one I know is watching it due to coulrophobia so my excitement is going to be without an outlet. At least I have this thread!

Wow, the pathos I have for Jessica Lange's character is insane. During the David Bowie scene, especially the pitiful way that Evan Peters looked down at her, you could tell that for all the "fame" she puts forth, she's just a sad old woman past her prime grasping at straws. And then the final scene/reveal just drove home how sad and broken she is. Really, really well done the way they paced out her character's introduction throughout this first episode. And Twisty the Clown, god drat it. I think someone mentioned already, but I think he's so effective because he's not just a mindless killer. The scene in the bus where he's trying to do "clown"-y things, but nobody's laughing at he gets frustrated and starts throwing poo poo and kicking the cages, that was TERRIFYING, because there's so much uncertainty in his actions, you can almost see the moment he snaps. gently caress, this season started out right.

I was worried during the singing because I couldn't tell if it was supposed to be embarrassingly bad or not, considering the whole Stevie Nicks disaster last season. I'm glad they made it a plot point.
