Wow. I should have known better, but I posted over on the terraria subreddit asking about a 1/2 HP mod for mobs. I was met with "Just upgrade your gear! It's easy, I don't know why YOU can't do it." This was naturally accompanied by down votes. I don't understand why this is such a weird request in a game that tunes a lot of its content around multiple simultaneous players.
Honestly, half health would be a great solution for singleplayer moon events. Just giving yourself good items isn't usually enough (and even with really good items getting to trophy waves in the Frost Moon can be near-impossible in singleplayer unless you've got everything specced just a certain way in a proper, mechanics-exploiting arena). The main problem for moon events like that is that everything just has so much loving health. I usually don't have trouble staying alive, but I sure do have trouble doing enough damage in a single night to get through the waves.

I've been doing the moon waves with Fishron gear and Spectre healing hood + warding accessories and I have yet to get frost moon trophies in a solo or duo.

I think the health values for the frost moon are okay (maybe a bit too high for the bigger enemies) but the flying pattern of the Ice Queens makes them impossible to kill quickly when you solo and on top of that, they have 34k hp. That's why the pumpkin moon trophy wave is doable, the Pumpkings don't go off screen away every time you try to shoot them.

I actually once made a setup that exploited spawning mechanics so that all the enemies would immediately pop in on a single spot where I could focus all of my attacks, rather than having to waste time waiting for them to wander in. This took quite a lot of doing. Then I had all of my magic gear at Frost Moon or Fishron levels, everything specced for damage above all else (offensive specter, I think, but it's been months), chugged every potion and used every applicable item, and just concentrated fire for the entire night. The sun rose pretty much as soon as I hit the wave where Trophies would start to drop. :smith: And of course god help you if you mess up even the tiniest bit, because you can die in a second and then you've not only lost your chance at the event, you're going to have to spend the whole night getting your rear end kicked.
I think I'm just not good enough for the Frost Moon. I know that all I'm missing are the trophies, but dammit, those are important to me.

Oh man. I fired up a new game even though I am kinda wanting to wait for 1.3, I wanted to try the Halloween event before it goes by. Doing some shallow spelunking and the first jellyfish I kill drops the nice glow neck. Pretty nice, especially since I know it's used for some water equipment later. I continue on and am picking off some slime swarm down below when BAM; Slime Staff. Never used it before, but I can see why it is so good. Little guy tears rear end and looks hilarious. Didn't realize it was one of the rarest items in the game.

Yep. If anything they might have slowed things down, because my attacks would sometimes pass through enemies, since any given mob can only be hit with a certain number of hits per second.

I don't want to continue an unwanted derail, but I also would be interested in a mod that tones down the HP on the moon events so that a well-geared, reasonably skilled solo player can do them in one night.

I think that Terraria in general is crying out for an item(s) that allow you to keep it perpetual day and/or night. They would obviously be end-game and hard to get/make, but I see a lot of uses for something like that.

It's baffling to me that an item like this doesn't already exist. I mean, sure something like that might screw up event cycles and I don't know the game's coding but just tie things to a clock and then make a fancy "Weather Control Orb" or something.

Nice to have, but TShock is for MP servers only unless I am mistaken, and the major issue with these end-game lunar events is the fact that in single-player it's extremely difficult for one person to finish them before sunrise.

It's of limited use to be able to set the in-game time to sundown if the issue is that one can't do what needs to be done before daybreak.

Yeah most of my want for lower HP is simply that I start dreading boss fights because they feel tediously drawn out. If I wanted 10 minute long boss fights where if I gently caress up or go over the time limit I have to try all over again I'd just raid more in wow. Here's a few houses that my friends or I have made that I think look particularly nice, mixed with a few that I've just saved as inspiration. They're not all groundbreaking but I think they came out all right.
The main bits of advice I can give you are to build more than you need (decorative roofs, supports, rounded corners, porches, overhangs, etc)., use paint liberally (to create contrast, not just change default color), and more important than anything, mix up multiple materials. Making the background a different material than anything else gives the impression that the inside is actually an interior, not just a hollow shell, and makes the building seem more cozy.

A simple enough little double-dwelling with a small overhang and varied decoration.

Modest use of paint can make a building stand out a lot more.

Or try a multi-tiered approach and work materials in layers with varying heights.

Simple squarish houses can be more cozy if you add on to the outside and mix up the interior decoration.

Even the smallest, plainest houses look nicer with mixed materials...

Or a little paint.

An underground dining plaza.

A wizard's tower cloaked in eternal rain.

A clever facade for a snow-covered longhouse.

Heavy mixing and patterning of different materials makes a very evocative background.

Simulating moulding, especially with high-contrast backgrounds, can make a house seem pleasantly modern. And don't forget about wallpaper bgs. One great touch here is the use of smooth, colored walls (like pumpkin) around windows to create the illusion of curtains!

One thing that can really make a house stand out is a clever use of blocks to create a set piece, like the aforementioned curtains, or these fireplaces.

Here's a bunch of clever setpieces and cozy designs to reference from.

And as a bonus, here's a massive picture someone made with all the different furniture sets and fencing and so on, in case you want a decorative style to pick from.

My giant wizard tower does look kind of bland compared to this stuff, admittedly. I can never find the time or motivation to fill out the basement (since the foundation reaches all the way into the bedrock). I sometimes wonder why I did that at all. :gonk:

Two separate friends that have seen the tower both independently claimed it looks like a casino. I've never been in a casino, but I'm guessing that's an indication it's a little too gaudy.

I tried to have the snow on a slanted roof by filling in the ensuing gaps with snow brick walls but it doesn't look quite right. Anyone have any ideas on how to make it look better?

And while I'm here here's a few more of my builds I really like. They could be a lot better but I've pretty much stopped work on them since I've decided to make a whole new homeworld after the next patch.

Dryad's House:

If I make another tree house I'm going to plan it out a little bit better so it doesn't look quite so... straight. More natural. Though I'm becoming increasingly a fan of the idea of the Dryad living in an enchanted pumpkin patch...

Shaman's House:

I like the idea of the statues using the lihzard furnaces as statue heads and I think next time I'm going to give myself a little more room to play around with those. Also you can tell I plumb ran out of room decorating ideas after the potions hut.

Gun Dealer's House:

This is an odd one, having the Gun Dealer live in the dessicated corpse of a giant worm. It didn't pan out too great though, as the twisty, narrow passages aren't exactly decoration-friendly, and in the end I just ended up haphazardly throwing banners and trophies everywhere. I do like the concept, though, so next time I'm thinking a more open monster corpse would be better. Maybe a dead Eye of Cthulu, or the Twins.

Truffle's House:

The house itself is kind of meh but I really like how I decorated the surrounding area. Mushroom blocks are super cool to build with.

Fisherman's Shanty:

I just think this one is pleasantly quaint. Next time I plan to fully decorate it with the various fisherman's quest rewards.

I can at least say one trick I've found for using some wall types and smoothing them out visually with bricks is using paint to mask the visual difference between them, though this obviously depends heavily on which blocks you're using and how.

I am not an egghead. I am well-read.
One of my guiding principles of building a house is 'don't make it symmetrical'. Usually I start with following the basic contours of the land around it, building into it. Stairs are allowed and expected, and I mess around to make sure my path at a normal walking speed doesn't have too many bumps and whatnot. Other than that, I just go with little sub-rooms as the fancy takes me.

This one followed the basic hillside, then started going deeper and working my way out. That path in the center goes down into the cave systems; it was there already and I just built around it. When the Hallow started spreading, I had to dig out the walls of my Dryad's room and thicken them because it was Hallowing the background, which makes it non-valid housing.

This is a more recent world, where I went a bit more gamey. Sits off the ground, temple traps to eat up invasions and blood moons, teleporter to a pathway below the ground so I could collect loot without getting exposed. It was actually my first experience with wiring and traps and such.

In the past I've tried to do a lot of realistic building options like a bathroom/kitchen/bedroom in every NPC home. I just recently decided to make a basic NPC home in TEdit and copy and paste it because I was getting too wrapped up in building. I still did a few things like making all the floors and walls 3 tiles thick (with planked wall in the middle) but I realized I had a problem when I found myself googling building foundation diagrams to try to get my slab/gravel/sand order right.
