I only pay $170 for a new Corolla, the gently caress? 650 for an HHR. Nice.

Hey coldpie, we've got a bunch of used manual Imprezas in our dealership inventory. Did you talk to your salesman about any of our used inventory?

It didn't occur to me, no. I did look through all of the local dealerships listed on subaru.com and there are zero manual hatchback Imprezas available (both of the ones currently listed as manuals at Minnetonka are actually autos). I'll email the sales dude I talked to, maybe he has access to better tools.

If you go to our dealership's website, you can see all of our inventory online. I can sell you any of them through our Hyundai location but you'd be better off going through Subaru if it's certified preowned.

Maybe I'm stupider than I thought, but when I filter Used Cars by Hatchback and Manual, I come up with two cars, which are the Imprezas at Minnetonka that are actually automatics. Am I missing something?

Probably both.

Went to my finance manager to ask about a credit application. Their response, "Well, they're not paying any of their bills right now, so it'll be a little tough." Yep. Not impossible, not no way or hell no, just a little tough.

Our phones are down right now so it's impossibly quiet in here and I'm not going to get any work done if I can't call people or take sales calls. I forgot my Kindle and I've already run out of things to look at on the internet. :smithicide:

You can buy lovely 60" TVs for under $700 retail. That's not hard to bury into the cost of a vehicle, and it's likely they are getting the for at least $100 less.

Yes! I bought my first manual car from a dealership. The saleswoman drove me around first, and then showed me how to drive stick in the parking lot.

I did it. My friend taught me the basics in his car. I attempted to test drive the car myself because the salesman was too busy and it had to be the most nerve racking test drive I've ever done. I ended up buying the car and it has been my daily driver.

This one time my dad was test driving an S60R (they had just come out) and it had the manual. The sales guy was with us. I asked if I could drive and that it'd been awhile since I'd driven stick (it had been about 8 years) and I made a complete and utter fool of myself and probably pissed the guy off. I was revving it pretty high and dumping the clutch and stalling it somehow because I didn't know what I was doing.

A few years later, I bought a Mini Cooper and the salesman showed me the basics and I took off and figured it out the rest of the way on my own.

Anecdotes, surely.

I had this happen in reverse. I went to test drive an RX-8 not long after they came out. The dealer had a policy that they had to be the ones to take the vehicle off the lot so the girl hopped in and then had a horrified look on her face when she realized she had to drive it. I wound up giving her a mini lesson on how to get out of the parking lot and into the lot right next to them so we could switch. The rest of the drive was her asking questions and watching me drive it.

My father on the other hand was test driving a T100 a long time ago and had not been in a manual in probably 10 years prior to that point. He got it most of the way out into oncoming traffic and I sat in the jump seat watching the horrified look on the salesman's face while my dad just said gently caress and started the fire drill to get moving before we got creamed. Fun times.

On the flip side, some of our salespeople could probably use a few lessons. I followed a coworker over to a sister store to drop off a car, and I took a manual Genesis. My coworker insisted that he be the one to drive us back. Cue me cackling and howling with laughter as he stalls it several times trying to get out of the parking lot, which then turns into :smith: as he grinds the gears and then does a 4500 RPM launch to get going at a stoplight.

Our phones went down last night, so I used my personal cell phone to call customers. Despite leaving my work number and email with all of them, one of them called me back before 8 am this morning. It's my day off and the dealership doesn't open until 9. :argh:

I know why she was calling anyway. I explained to her last night that having an appointment on a car is not the same as putting a deposit on a car. Anyone can still walk into the dealership and buy that car until her appointment time tomorrow. I explained that we do offer the chance to put a deposit on a car and it's completely refundable, but she wailed on the phone that she didn't have any money. How the gently caress are you going to buy a car without any money?

I've probably had 250k or more of stick driving under my belt easily at this stage but for the life of me trying to drive my brothers TDI Sportwagen was drat near impossible at first. Fully loaded car of drunk people (designated driver) and for whatever reason slightly above idle that car has no torque. Killed the engine no less than 5-6 times just getting it down the road.

Coworker killed his clutch after about 40-50k miles because he rested his foot on the clutch pedal instead of the dead pedal.

A friend thought that "engine braking" was the feeling you get when downshifting without revmatching, ie the feeling of your clutch soaking up all the rev difference. He'd been doing it for years.

Funny story, when my friend was looking for a replacement for his bricknose Bronco I went with him (and almost convinced him to get a 4runner) we went to look at a cheap Superduty, the guy was like "sure, I've got another guy coming but I don't think he's actually buying so you can look after he's done". Well after we get to the guy's street we see the dude standing in his driveway and two flat-brimmed hats in a SD pulling away so we decide to follow them to see if it's dogtracking or smoking or w/e. Well the light to exit this neighborhood is on a slight uphill grade and we sat behind these dipshits as they murdered the guy's clutch trying to master the art of the hill-start. When they finally got it moving (two green lights later) we found out the truck has a posi since there was smoke coming off both rear tires as well as the clutch.
I think the moral of the story is never let someone test drive your vehicle without you.

Do sellers actually let people take test drives without them when selling private party?

One of our sales consultants let a customer take a test drive without him the other night. He was gone for three hours but only put 37 miles on the car.

Hot date?

When we sold the Mazdaspeed I tossed the keys to anyone I thought would have the cash to actually buy it. My health and safety is worth more than monitoring some dude's test drive. I always make sure the engine and gearbox is warmed up before handing a car over though.

Yeah it's certainly a thing, I've test driven a dozen private sale cars without the owner. I've also been to a bunch of BHPH lots where they just tossed me the keys and said be back in half an hour or before it runs out of fuel (and there's never more than 15 minutes of fuel in it)

I often take a car to a parking lot and pop the hood/crawl under it and inspect everything closely when I take it on a test drive. This way I can document any issues with it without having the owner peering over my shoulder the whole time. Granted I only do this with used vehicles.

When I sold my last motorcycle, the guy wanted to take it for a drive. He handed me asking price in hundreds, and left me to chat with his incredibly attractive Daisy Duke lookalike girlfriend (complete with shorts/cowboy boots), while we sat petting his cool-rear end dog next to his clean old Cherokee.

I don't want to say I was rooting for a fatal accident, but if a semi truck was to drift into his lane it would have been as good a time as any.

Guy let us 3 drive off with the car alone. I guess we'd left 2 other cars (because socal) in front of his house, but still. He flogged it to see if it would smoke under load (issue with those cars).

So are 24 hour test drives a thing anywhere? One Toyota dealer in town has been doing it since the 22R was still in production, and I think it's a really neat sales tactic- the customer gets to see if the car actually fits into their life, and the "this is MY car now" feeling that sales people try to foster gets forged a lot more solidly than even the best salesman can accomplish in the space of an hour. And really the costs involved can't be a whole lot more than operating a fleet of service loaners.

In my experience as soon as they see my credit score they pretty much do backflips to keep me interested in a vehicle including taking it home for the night/weekend whatever. Id imagine most places are probably like that, if they think you can get financed easy they do whatever they can to get a sale.

I would imagine they'd be okay with a 24 test drive at my dealership. We let someone take a weekend test drive at my old dealership, which invokes several hundred miles of driving, just because the lady was such a giant pain in the rear end.

They insisted she take it for 48 hours, but back then played the 'let us take a photocopy of your id' (and run your credit rating in that time). I remember there being a few hours of playtime with the salesman and the "manager" to just give the turd back and get rid of it.

I have never negotiated directly with a high pressure salesperson. I just walk away if they don't respect my wishes. I have to say that Neillo BMW had great folks all around (and were completely oblivious to the unicorn they had)- all the way up to the beancounter who tried to upsale aftermarket warranties, and tried really hard to force me into a "backup" loan with a huge APR "just in case."

I bought a car sight unseen from Dallas (was in Houston ~3 hr away), pre financed from my credit union and they "couldn't get the fax to work". Now, mind that I bought it on memorial day, but the dealership was supposedly a top tier place. Magically when I got there questions about my financing disappeared.

I was just trapped on the phone for fifteen minutes with a dude who was upset that his son couldn't get a better interest rate on a vehicle loan. He was very nice and calm, but he didn't seem to understand that I can't magically give you a better interest rate. I gave him suggestions on how to get a lower price for monthly payments (cosigner, more money down, less expensive vehicle, securing financing through his own bank), but he just wasn't receptive to any of it.

Sorry dude, but not everyone is gonna get those magic 0.9% interest rates. You gotta prove yourself first.

So far this month, I've sold eight cars. My goal for the month was 40. Ehhhhh...

It's not really helping that I've been getting so many garbage leads lately. I split my leads with whoever else is working with me, and two of the leads I got in this morning were from people who wanted to bitch. Those are two missed opporunities to sell to someone else. :(
