Would the distributor just need a rebuild to fix that leak, and would a compression test be a reliable enough way of verifying the valve seal leak? If not, is there really any way to tell it's the valves and not something more involved without actually going into the engine?

Yeah, I've never seen an MR2 engine bay in person, but I'd imagine they're cramped. edit: Woops bought it, he took pretty far below his asking. The smoke was paltry and dissipated almost instantly, definitely valve stems if I'm reading everything correctly. Everything was in pretty good shape and it drove great. The fuel injection and 5 speed were never available here on any car, so to add them to a GT means importing a stack of vintage parts from Europe. The A/C console is rare as hell. He also doesn't have it priced on the wrong side of $10k like so many nice GTs are. It would cost you a hell of a lot more to build that than he's asking.

DJ Commie posted:I know the Manta got the EFI engine in 75, did they ever come with a 5 speed? Whoops, yeah, looks like they did show up here with L-jet for the last year, but at least Wikipedia claims 3/4-speed gearboxes only. The 5-speed is a Getrag similar to those found in E30s and the like, but with a totally different integrated bellhousing so you need to get the Opel-specific model. Pham Nuwen posted:It looks drat nice. Do you know what the parts availability is like? Rockauto of course has some stuff, but for instance they don't have radiators. Good, not great. Body panels are one of the big problems since the GT kinda has the same problem as the Elise - the bulk of the body is in large, complex single pieces that are difficult to repair and even moreso to replace. There's been some success on OpelGT.com with people using eBay aluminum radiators intended for early Hondas since they're about the same size and far more common. OpelGTSource is pretty much the only game in town for parts that you can't get from Rockauto, but in a lot of cases it will come down to what you can adapt / upgrade to from other cars.

Full sentences, correct spelling, grammatically solid, even had multiple paragraphs rather than the usual 400-word run-on sentence. In the very first email, he specified a day he'd like to come down and told me he'd like to have a mechanic inspect it. He's coming from Sacramento, so hopefully he's not so dumb as to drive an hour just to offer me half of what I asked, and he says if he likes it he'll make a cash offer that day. I sold it to him. Spent all afternoon on it, because he's as neurotic as I am, but ah well.

Does "original miles" actually mean something or is it just a stupid way of saying mileage? I don't think I've seen that outside of craigslist. Not specifying could mean 60k, 160k, 260k. now it's just poo poo idiots say. like "body is strait" and "surface rust"

I always thought "original miles" meant either miles driven by the original owner, or, miles on the original engine. The idea being there are no additional miles on the car that are unaccounted-for in this figure.
