That thing owns hard. If I lived in IL, and assuming it's not rusty, I'd be all over it.

1900$ OBO *(must see in person to make offer)* Less than I paid 6 months ago, not looking to make a profit just want car to go to a good home.

Contact by text or email preferred, will ensure speedy reply.

Car is all original, will include factory head unit (installed). Factory mud flaps are in vehicle, not installed.
Car runs and drives, shifts smoothly, does not run rough, pulls smoothly.
Body is in need of love, rear quarters have been poorly repaired by improper means to fix previous rust issues, cheap paint job starting to fade. Front bumper lip has rust due to previous car bra. Comes with 87+ lip (not installed).
Engine has typical valve seal wear, smokes on startup. Also has very common distributor seal leak, leaks on exhaust, makes a mess. Header downpipe leak/rust makes ticking sound exhaust leak sounds.
Runs cool, loses no coolant. Engine bay fan works.

With a little investment could be a great daily driver, or with a larger investment would be a great restoration platform for what is becoming a rare, desirable car.

Video of car: http://youtu.be/7a1pliYrUCo

Would the distributor just need a rebuild to fix that leak, and would a compression test be a reliable enough way of verifying the valve seal leak? If not, is there really any way to tell it's the valves and not something more involved without actually going into the engine?

A leakdown test would be a better indicator of valves vs piston rings but turning each cylinder to TDC is going to be sort of a pain.

Yeah, I've never seen an MR2 engine bay in person, but I'd imagine they're cramped.

edit: Woops bought it, he took pretty far below his asking. The smoke was paltry and dissipated almost instantly, definitely valve stems if I'm reading everything correctly. Everything was in pretty good shape and it drove great. I've got my very own origami spaceship now :3:

That is straight up gold, especially if there's no hidden rust or bondo, and everything works properly. The fuel injection and 5 speed were never available here on any car, so to add them to a GT means importing a stack of vintage parts from Europe. The A/C console is rare as hell.

He also doesn't have it priced on the wrong side of $10k like so many nice GTs are. It would cost you a hell of a lot more to build that than he's asking.

It looks drat nice. Do you know what the parts availability is like? Rockauto of course has some stuff, but for instance they don't have radiators.

Whoops, yeah, looks like they did show up here with L-jet for the last year, but at least Wikipedia claims 3/4-speed gearboxes only. The 5-speed is a Getrag similar to those found in E30s and the like, but with a totally different integrated bellhousing so you need to get the Opel-specific model.

Good, not great. Body panels are one of the big problems since the GT kinda has the same problem as the Elise - the bulk of the body is in large, complex single pieces that are difficult to repair and even moreso to replace. There's been some success on OpelGT.com with people using eBay aluminum radiators intended for early Hondas since they're about the same size and far more common.

OpelGTSource is pretty much the only game in town for parts that you can't get from Rockauto, but in a lot of cases it will come down to what you can adapt / upgrade to from other cars.

That's way too long to be a Beetle chassis underneath unless they did some serious modifications, so who knows.

Some guy emailed me yesterday about my car, I think this is the best craigslist email I've ever had. Full sentences, correct spelling, grammatically solid, even had multiple paragraphs rather than the usual 400-word run-on sentence. In the very first email, he specified a day he'd like to come down and told me he'd like to have a mechanic inspect it. He's coming from Sacramento, so hopefully he's not so dumb as to drive an hour just to offer me half of what I asked, and he says if he likes it he'll make a cash offer that day.

So yeah, I fully expect to be murdered on Thursday, because no real Craigslist buyers act like this.

I sold it to him. Spent all afternoon on it, because he's as neurotic as I am, but ah well.

it used to mean first trip around, from when cars had 5 digit odometers. so if it says "60000" original miles would mean it has 60,000 miles. Not specifying could mean 60k, 160k, 260k.

now it's just poo poo idiots say. like "body is strait" and "surface rust"

I always thought "original miles" meant either miles driven by the original owner, or, miles on the original engine. The idea being there are no additional miles on the car that are unaccounted-for in this figure.
