They've had the same 2 styles of litterbox (the boxes themselves have been replaced every 6-9 months because plastic) since then and the same Worlds Best litter. IDGI.

I proposed we get an older cat. The girlfriend thinks that an older cat may come with behavioral baggage and not adjust to us. I figure an older cat would be easier to deal with ( much less rambunctious / assholish / needy than a kitten ).

What's the minimum age we should shoot for?

Maybe you could compromise and look for a cat around a year old? Still very kittenish, but the personality should start to settle so it's easier to tell if he/she will be OK on their own. At this age their habits can still be mold-able, too. Some kittens are fine being by themselves for long periods of time (they sleep a lot), some get a little neurotic without interaction with another living thing.

We rescued a 16 week old cat when we were in college. You know how some people are all like, "I love infants but I'm so glad I started having kids when I had the energy for it in my 20's; I can't imagine doing that now"? I have the same feeling about kittens. I love them to pieces but I don't have the energy for a kitten anymore.

You need one of the ones that'll break down the compounds and destroy the smell or they're likely to go there again. In the meantime some baking soda can help clear the worst of it.

One of my cats is behaving... strangely.
Namely, recently he won't eat his wet food. Unless I handfeed him :psyduck:.
Standard scene: I put out the food, the older cat chomps down on hers, meanwhile the little rear end in a top hat licks it a bit, takes some little bites, then circles his bowl satisfied. But if I take a bit of food in my hand and offer it to him, he'll go down on it with gusto, take some bites off the food still left in the bowl, then look at me; rinse and repeat.
If he doesn't finish his food, the older cat will instead, so simply leaving the food out is not really an option.

In addition to wet food at fixed times, I also free-feed them dry food. Should I simply remove the dry until he learns to eat his veggies wet food?

Older cats don't necessarily have baggage, and besides, I think a lot of shelters will let you hang out with a cat to get an idea of what they're like first. Additionally, because their personalities are more set, you would actually have a better chance of finding a cat with a specific personality you like, like a lap cat or a playful one or whatever. You really, really can never tell these things with kittens.

I'd agree with 1 year old cats being ok, id even go so far as to say 9 months or so should be ok too, but anything recognizably "kitten" is probably going to be a bit much, especially if you haven't had cats before.

One of mine has taken to bringing little foam soccer balls up from downstairs and leaving them by the food dish. He also bats most of the catnip toys and sparkle balls down the same stairs and I find them all over the landing in the morning.

Our cats bring us toys ... every morning we get up to find a big pile of cat toys just inside the door. My husband works at home, and if he has his office door closed he'll find a pile of toys outside it at the end of the day.

And my littlest cat, who has way more sweetness than brains, takes anything live that he catches (a mouse ... a lizard ... a bug ... whatever) and puts it into his food bowl. He doesn't kill it or eat it, mind, he just puts it in his food bowl and makes it stay there. Cat has issues.

When Clawdia was a kitten, she'd take an old "Pound Purry" (Basically, a cat Pound Puppy), and would eat with and chew on it. It eventually got this giant, food-encrusted hole in its neck, and was so disgusting, it had t5o be thrown away.

Tama would take those little, furry mice and throw them in either the toilet, or her water bowl. Nothing like having to fish out bloated messes of hair and cardboard. Cats are weird.

A neighborhood cat (looks healthy, may or may not be a stray at this point) likes me. We'll chat on sunny days when I work in the garden. He shows his affection by trying to get inside, and also eating small mammals on our back porch and leaving half of them for us. Murder presents! :3:

I do wish he'd leave the birds alone, but I don't mind knowing he's around catching mice before they get inside.

(Also our cat HATES him. We know he's nearby when our cat zooms from window to window.)

So we had our [~8-9mo] cat neutered last Tuesday. Standard procedure when we brought him home that evening - dark room for a few hours, left him mostly to his own devices, made sure he had food and water access going forward. They had him pretty doped up, but he was up and moving within hours.

He may have had one day since the surgery (maybe a day or two after) where he was relatively mobile, playful, etc., but in general he's been fairly lethargic and lying around in one spot or another since the surgery. Cat's normally very energetic, chases stuff all over the house, etc., but he's just been lying about for the most part. He can track quick movements with his head, walks around occasionally, suture area looks fine to me with no sign of inflammation or infection. Should I call a vet in the morning or just wait this out?

e: he is eating/drinking/peeing normally.

Oh no, my 5 year old cat seems to have trouble peeing. He's managed two tiny little squirts since yesterday, but he keeps going in every corner of the house squatting like he's going to pee (same position, tail upright and twitching like he does when he's in his litter box) but can't seem to go. Doesn't seem to be in any serious pain yet, he's just as affectionate and playful as normal apart from dashing off to his litter box every half an hour and attempting to go, but I'm going to take him to the vet as soon as they open in an hour because I'm worried there could be a blockage :(

I hate looking at the internet for things like this, like looking up symptoms whenever I get sick. The worst case scenario always pops straight into my head and makes me panic.

Illegal Hen
Just got back from the vet with my mother's cat - found half a dead rat in the kitchen two days ago and we were keeping an eye on her in case she'd eaten rat poison.

This morning I wake up to her hiding in a corner and not wanting to move. I explained about the potential rat poison to the vet and he doesn't think she's eaten any, but she's definitely caught some bug from the rat and she's on antibiotics for a week now. She's looking a bit sorry for herself but at least she's okay.

This is the latest in a long string of near misses with this cat so maybe my mother will finally agree not to let her outside anymore :argh:

Vet said that means it's not a bladder issue but gave him some antiinflammatory meds and anti biotics in case it's a uti, plus some painkillers. Said that the recent building work my neighbours have been doing might've stressed him out, triggering the problem.

Gotta keep an eye on him and take him back tomorrow if he doesn't pee again by the morning.

If it seems to go away for a bit but you still want to keep track, one trick I use to help me monitor Pizza (who had a scare with crystals last year and has been on prescription food ever since) is to smell his fur. Back when he first started having bladder issues the first thing I noticed is that he smelled really strongly of cat litter, meaning he'd been camped out in there, straining and unable to go, for long enough that the smell stuck to him. When we noticed that we started watching him more closely to see why he was stinking and discovered him straining in his box.

So now I obviously keep my eye on his time in the box but also make sure he's smelling like a normal cat every now and again to make sure he's not hiding any problems from me. Plus I get to pester him and shove my face in his fur so, win/win.

Hi cat thread! Long time no see. Just to refresh, I have two neutered boy kitties, Paulo and Yuki. They are both 5 years old. Last weekend was vet time for them . . . They both got high marks except that apparently Yuki has a dental problem. The vet said that some cats have this thing where their immune system attacks their teeth, but only a particular pair of teeth on the bottom jaw. She said he needs to have those extracted soon but that he should be fine after that. Anyone heard of it before? Not that I don't believe her, I'd just feel better hearing more sources that he'll be fine after one $500-700 surgery. :(

Also something happened that I haven't seen before . . . Yuki got taken in the back to get his blood drawn and had to go home with a little bandage. When we got home, Paulo was mean to him. When Yuki got near, Paulo would hiss at him and try to drive him away. I've heard that this can happen because one cat will smell weird and thus be less familiar to the other cat. I'm worried because I imagine this will be 100x worse when Yuki spends all day in surgery and comes home again while Paulo gets to stay home like a jerk. Anything I can do to make the process easier next time? My apartment is pretty small so separating them fully with two litter boxes and everything would be hard.

Just wondering if you guys think this is a cat being a cat or if I should try switching litter. I'm using Cat Attract litter and my cat doesn't have any issue going in the litter box, it's just that he digs through the litter until he hits the bottom of the litter box, scratches at the bottom a couple times to make sure nothing more will come up then does his business, covers it up, sniffs a bit, uncovers it, covers it up more and eventually ends up making a mountain of litter in the box and a semi-mountain outside of the box.

I'm going to get a covered one this weekend I think..

Yesterday morning we had discovered a small little bald spot that was bleeding next to Sigma's ear. We thought he had just gotten caught on something and accidentally scalped himself, except it was bigger when I got home later that afternoon. I took him to the vet where we determined it was not ringworm, and she gave me some wipes to help him heal faster. Today, though, it's bigger than when it started. He is acting completely normal aside from being more snuggly than usual, but I switched his cat food (which he immediately scarfed down) in case it might help. I figure I'll wait a couple of days to see if it gets much worse, but has anyone else dealt with this before?

Sigma in his Halloween costume:

He freaked out and fell off the counter into the dog's water bowl about five seconds after this photo op.
