This is one of my favorite things about the series even though I find it artificial and hampering in other contexts where it doesn't so perfectly fit the game design. Yeah, if you want to use a medkit in a fight with a mutant it's probably going to be kind of a hassle. Within reason, still a game :)

I think they were actually going to make CS like The Faction War but they realized way too late the current engine was poo poo. Then they moved on and made CoP and completely forgot about creating the perfect STALKER game. Either that or they knew if they made Clear Sky as intended they wouldn't be able to sell any sequels.

TFW takes all the bullshit out of the game and replaces it with no bullshit STALKER gameplay. It captures the essence and throws it at your feet for a pure unadulterated experience. In other words this is the perfect mod.

Does anyone else feel this way about this mod? I can't say it enough, or thank Ddraig enough for picking it back up. It's perfectly awesome and shines the true, INCREDIBLY FUN, glorious gameplay of the game and nothing else. I'm going crazy here this is so awesome. Now back to the zone...

Yeah, this deffo knocks ShoC/OGSE off the top of my list.

I just took the Freedom base, so that's three total factions out of the picture, including Defiance and the Loners. Finally got the orders to push out into the rest of the zone, but unless the bandits get a bunch of new recruit I think I'll have some trouble moving farther out, seeing as our resources are pretty thin.

E: also, for whatever reason there was a Loner hiding out in the freedom base. He was neutral at first, and I had the option to stick him up for his backpack, but a few minutes later he had turned hostile so I solved that problem with buckshot.

Hah, that's pretty neat - you can rob people as a bandit?

Love the little touches.

Probably worth remembering to capture the blue resource points. They increase the gear level you can buy and the amount of squads you get.

That's the whole point of being a bandit. Although it makes people shoot on sight more. I'm pretty sure it helps being a group too.

Ddraig, do you think you could add the "stick up" option to other shadier factions like defiance and the mercs? The mercs are basically bandits on a mission. They're a bunch of goons. Not to mention everyone hates them.

Yeah Defiance are just the militant wing of the Loners. I wouldn't really see them as being stick up artists. Mercs maybe, because they're outsiders in the entire Zone culture and take other things by force.

Being able to rob people as mercs would make the faction a bit more dynamic. Instead of bandit tough guy talk the dialogue should be more like "we need your equipment, give it to us or die". Straight up business instead of bullying.

The bandits are obviously my favorite faction, but the mercs are definitely a very close second.

So thinking about the STALKER setting in roleplay/expanded universe terms, the ruble. It's not the currency of Ukraine, but it's used as the most common medium of exchange in the Zone. Do you think that it acts as sort of an Eastern European dollar analogue as a commonly accepted but not really legal tender across multiple nations?

I also got the idea of depicting the Zone as more multicultural in the sense of having stalkers, mercenaries, etc. from other nations coming in. Imagine the player encountering a hideously unprepared Vice News team trying to film their latest big documentary, or a hipster urban explorer from Colorado who wants to take really awesome pictures and get a journalism career but hasn't even really bothered to learn to speak more than token amounts of the local language.

Being in Colorado on business, I get the feeling that you mistook a tourist or a student from Boulder as a Colorado native. I see a lot of that on the coasts, not so much here. None of that half shaved head BS, or dressing like you just walked out of a dumpster (hipsters :argh:).

I think that kind of character perfectly fits a Boulder college student. Someone who mostly spends his time in coffee houses wearing thick-framed glasses and a beanie and occasionally goes to abandoned warehouses to take pictures. And he decides to suit up in his best photographer's vest and cargo pants, put a shemagh over his mouth, and sneak into the Zone thinking that he'll become famous once he uploads everything to his blog.

I'm pretty sure if I do the Vice News idea, the reporter is going to be Tim the Ferguson Moocher with his Kevlar vest and giant PRESS patch.

Does it matter? Look into it. All I really need to say is "Blackwater".
As I understand it mercenaries are mostly ex-military who probably have a bad rep or straight up dishonorable discharge.

Although you have a much better idea than me. They are backed by lots of money. However they'd probably need to prove themselves to get that kind of support. They're already sent in with gear and such. What about them not getting reinforcements at all, or even less. And the only way to get more goons is to call in a chopper. Possibly tie it to the resource point mechanic (the more points you control the more choppers with goons come when you radio).

This sounds like a total idea guy thing. Not to mention I'm willing to bet it wouldn't even be possible. In a technical yet still conceptual way it makes me cringe with pain if I thought about doing it myself. Nevermind getting it to work, it would require so much debugging. The only way would be if we worked together, if it was even possible in the first place.

What about being able to call in a chopper for fire-support?... AND more goons? Sounds like some next level poo poo, a reward for sticking with the hardest faction for a certain amount of in-game progress.

The game is a little buggy and prone to the occasional crash, F5 is your friend, and make hard saves often as well.

I turned off looting for just that reason, random gawkers putting their heads in front of my buckshot so they can pick up a dogs tail or whatever is totally not my idea of fun.

Ddraig, Hog appears at the water tower you spawn at, perhaps after you level up once, without choosing a faction. As far as adding crazy stuff to TFW is concerned, your edit is great, However, more random weirdness would be excellent though, more flavours of guns, random suits, even new maps and factions, I think the Ultimate would be the whole idea of TFW in Lost Alpha. free roaming area capping in their lush expanded zone.

Ant and myself are neutral, running around making those roobs for a couple of exo's, then I might decide who to raze to the ground. clear sky are already out of my game, they were humbled and exorcised from their beloved swamp by the militant loners, I think my biggest problem so far is not finding a way to get my rank up with the mercs, I hung out with them for a while, and stole all their swank sg 5k sniper's while various waves of loners, duty and so on turned up.

I'm going to have a fiddle with all the trader scripts later, so you need to choose carefully who you sell your stuff to, but hauling your junk around should be worth a 15/20% gain over the pittance everyone offers you at first.

Adding new levels is a pain in the rear end because if the game graphs don't align up properly then it can seriously screw with things.

I have found a project called "Levels Rebirth" though, which as far as I can tell is just a very minor thing where they have gone through various levels and added more details into it. It only affects the geometry and objects, so all the spawns will work properly.

Right now the only two that are 'done' are Cordon and the Swamps.

For the mercs I was contemplating giving them player-deployed sentry guns but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to balance them without them being broken since I don't think stalkers will specifically attack them.

Maybe them being in limited supply, taking time to be deployed/undeployed (where you'd presumably have to assemble them) and having to be reloaded with fairly rare/pricey ammunition.

I'd have to look and see, to be honest.

Right now without looking at the scripts the way I'd do it would be to have the generic behaviour, but allow the player to call in a helicopter (I'm thinking of a special helicopter model - maybe a blackhawk) that will just ignore the merc faction. So stalkers will still run and hide but you can capture points with impunity because you've got a loving helicopter on your side.

If you have an actual task to capture the point, you can check and see if the task has flipped over to "Hold this position until reinforcements arrive" -- if not, then there's still an enemy threatening it. Once a reinforcement squad leader and his squad make it to the point, then the task should resolve (if not, they either aren't in position yet, or there is still an attacker threatening the point somewhere). The best way to resolve it is to have your personal sidekicks ordered to attack the point -- they should hunt down any remaining enemies or at least give you a general direction in which to look.

If you don't have a task yet, it can be tricky, but basically just order them (or your comrade) to attack the point and eventually it should get done, but you may not get a message about it every time.
