I totally agree. The artwork is pretty amazing, but the rest of the comic is bland. Anytime I read Rose Is Rose now, I still can't erase from my head the "feeder period". How loving bizarre. Speaking of loving bizarre, here's today's Jane's World, already in progress...

It's a parody of "We don't need no stinkin' badges" which is an old, old meme. You don't have to know what a budgie is to get it, though it's not particularly funny or original either way.

Everyone knows the stinkin' badges reference. No one outside of Australia knows what a budgie is, and without knowing what it is the joke makes no sense - it's just a weird reference to an iconic Western line.

edit: I guess some people outside outside of AUS do know!

We call them parakeets. I asked an office full of software engineers here in Minnesota what a budgie was and the only one that knew was a transplant from Chicago - although he said that's what pigeons are called there.

It's a thing you might buy in a pet store. I don't need to know anything more than that (and didn't until this thread!). It's a lovely joke even if you know what a budgie is.

They're budgies in every part of the northeast US I've spent time in (Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey.) Though my brother-in-law is from Maine and he calls them parakeets.
