Just started listening to WHM and so far I like it a lot more than HDTGM. I'm not a huge fan of horror movies so I've been listening to some of the back episodes. Having The Net episode randomly start playing in the middle of a meeting at the point where the hosts are discussing Sandra Bullock in a bikini was the highlight of my day.

I sorta like WHM but they can be so goddamned long winded and they are not afraid to run jokes into the ground. Those jokers need to get an editor who can keep them on a short leash and turn an awful 70 minute podcast into a great 40 minute podcast.

On How Did This Get Made they jump all over the place and describe the movie very incoherently.

On We Hate Movies they usually go into too much detail. The plot descriptions are as long as the movies themselves.

The Flop House gets it just right. You get a pretty good sense of what the movie's like/about, and it moves along at a nice clip. All in all I think the formula they stick to is effective.

Note: I do like We Hate Movies though!

This is my main problem with HDTGM. On the Flop House and We Hate Movies, I feel like I don't need to see the movie to understand the conversation, but HDTGM makes me feel like I do. And that would be fine if it wasn't a bad movie podcast. I don't wanna see Goobie to get the most out of a comedy podcast

I feel the exact same way but, in their defense, their entire model assumes that everyone's seen the movie. That's why they have the preview episode, unlike the other podcasts that keep it a secret until the day it drops.

I like Flop House but I think they get too distracted with puns/tangents/references and barely discuss the movie outside of the broadest terms and then jump into mailbag stuff which is my sign to turn it off. WHM does what I want out of a movie podcast but yeah, sometimes they run stuff into the ground.

I don't think its too much. They're the only ones I listen to when I haven't seen the movie because they describe it well enough for me to get all the jokes. Flophouse is great when I've seen the movie but its too easy for me to get lost when I haven't.

I noticed it's mostly Andrew. Someone will make a joke or an impression and Andrew will just repeat it while adding an obvious comment or something.
Guy's got the energy needed to keep the episodes going but he does need to tone that stuff down.

Yeah, this has been my problem with the Flophouse after recently listening to some episodes. They have 30 minutes of mailbag, and the mailbag in the episodes I've listened hasn't been all that entertaining. I also haven't really found the two guys who aren't Elliot Kalan that funny either.

I've listened to literally every single WHM (except for Wired) and every WHM spinoff (Side Order, Damnation, etc.) - most twice. I still can't differentiate between the different personalities once any given episode is done.

Edit: Tangential sidenote on how much I love the spooktacular theme. Never gets tired.

I think you nailed it. Each podcast has a different approach when dealing with the movies but I think the Flop House, even with their tangents, get it right most of the time. I compared the three podcast doing Easy Rider 2 and I ended up liking the Flop House episode more because it felt much more focused (but the other 2 podcast have their own strenghts as well).

Maybe if we took Elliot, June and one of the WHM guys (I still can't tell them apart) and put them doing a podcast we'll get the perfect bad movie podcast.

For the longest time I didn't understand how people couldn't tell voices apart but I started listening to Flophouse and can't tell Dan/Stuart apart. I also can't tell the Alcohollywood guys apart.

I feel that a large part of it is that Eric has the most distinctive voice in the WHM crew so it's pretty easy to attribute the funny things he says to him. If Stephen did the entire podcast as Kid Stephen, though...

Also, Eric is usually replaced by Chris Cabin, who is entirely forgettable. There is usually a very noticeable dip in quality when Chris replaces Eric.

I don't get how you guys can't tell the WHM people apart, they all sound very different to me. I am totally flabbergasted that anyone can't tell Dan/Stuart apart. Stuart talks in a pretty weird way in general, they have different pitches to their voices and different accents. I'm starting to think people who like movie podcasts all have some sort of sensory impairing brain damage.

I guess I just don't care who they are. The original Peaches are entirely distinguishable to me. But hey, if you'd prefer to call brain damage on people. v:shobon:v

EDIT: Actually, literally this. I know they have different voices (I don't think there's just one guy in the room), I just couldn't tell you who's who because their personalities don't stand out particularly strongly.

Eric and Chris are the only ones I could see mixing up out of either group, everyone else has really distinct voices and personalities to me. Case in point: I was going to start defending Chris Cabin because I really like Blame It On Outer Space but then I realised that's Eric Szyszka's podcast. Whoops.

Chris Cabin still isn't that terrible though, he gets some good ones in here and there.

Well, that's to be expected with Dan since as the Leonardo of the group he is doomed to be eternally trapped in the middle ground. However, you can still tell it's him by the sighing.

With WHM, I think it's that they have a larger group (even adding one person to the mix increases the confusion a lot) and they don't have any strong personality splits. There's a lot of crossover within the group and there isn't a lot of defining themselves as characters. (Their inability to do this may be part of the reason the comedians on the other two big bad movie podcasts are employed as writers for comedy television shows while they're yet another local comedy group.)
