I am sure it turns out that Batman and Superman are just participating in some sort of performance art, and immediately after that panel it pans to a series of serious-looking critics evaluating their piece.

I can't find the issue, but I know there was an early PAD Hulk comic where he used CAHUENGA! and SEPULVEDA! as sound effects.

Old comics had a lot of cop out covers, as it alludes to. Either they didn't give you all the context for the scene, or the cover was just a symbolic representation of the story, like the Joker totem pole.

But that's just what I mean when I say it's lazy!

"What noise would a time traveler's ship make?" gently caress it, Doctor Who.
"How do you use onomatopoeia to represent the distinctive sound of the TARDIS?" gently caress it, just literally write TARDIS there.

Funny story, Peter David forgot to show Rick Jones getting off that ship before it exploded. When the editor pointed this out, he quickly wrote a scene where Hulk and Betty, watching the ship explode, go "Oh no, Rick!", only to have him parachute down. He explains that, with all the weird stuff he's been through since he started hanging around with superheroes, he just carries a parachute with him everywhere now. When Hulk says that's ridiculous, Rick replies, "Why? I needed it, didn't I?"

PS, that cover's a cop-out. That's actually a defective Superman robot, and in the scene where they fight, it's not a death match. The robot starts strangling Batman and is immediately ordered to stop by the main bad guy.

It makes sense for comics to have qualifiers like that. Spider-man 100 (where he ends the issue with 6 arms) had a bunch of "This isn't a dream or hallucination or imagination it's an actual reveal" not because Spider-man was so bad that it had to do that, but because the medium does that silliness so often.

And with Superman, Imaginary Stories were a very regular thing, a way for the writers to cut loose and do whatever they wanted for an issue. Like split Superman into red and blue Supermen, or marry him to Lori Lemaris, or kill him off.

Even Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? ends with a nod to Imaginary Stories.

Wasn't the deal that they were simply milling out covers that would get people to buy then telling writers to write based on the cover art?

Wouldn't surprise me; some of those covers have a bit of a Far Side feel to them. They're so strange and fascinating on their own that you almost don't need the comic. That said, I do recall some actually advertising themselves as Imaginary Stories.

I'd like to mention Edge of Spider-Man #5 in this thread. Mostly because the issue is essentially (another) Anime/Manga inspired take on Spider-Man. (The suit is piloted by a little girl who operates a Spider-Man mech suit.)

Bonus points are awarded to having her classmates in her school be made up of the pilots from Neon Genesis Evangelion. And in one scene where Daredevil and her go to break up a gang, the gang members are clearly modelled on the cops from Ghost in the Shell.
