I suppose art that's "Rob Liefeld, but better" is a good match for a game that's "3.5, but better."

I wonder how much is the artist and how much is the art direction. "We really like the picture you provided, but I'm afraid we can't pay you until she is wearing shin pants"

From what I've heard, it's almost impossible to find freelance artists who are: 1) cheap, 2) quick, and 3) willing to pay any attention at all to art notes. Given the budget and time constraints RPG publishers have to work with, point 3 is the one that usually gets waived for the sake of expediency.

WAR is one of the most expensive and hardest to schedule artists out there for fantasy art. He's got a waiting list like 6 months long last I checked. Also, as far as Pathfinder art goes, I'm pretty sure they just give him a short description of what the class does and a race and gender and let him figure it out; all their other artists use his sketches/art to base their art of the iconics off of.

From talking with Mikan, I've heard the secret is to use artists who don't specialize in RPGs because those are the people who end up with all of the above. Career RPG artists are how you end up with this:

I've heard that miniatures sculptors are particularly bad for that sort of 'screw your guidelines' thing. Most of the 2D artists I've commissioned, I already know generally what I'm getting from their other works, or they're conscientious enough to send roughs and ask if they're accurate. The ones who don't, come out of my Rolodex. I have that luxury though, not having deadlines for character art, and not having to deal with lazy artists who have become as iconic as the badly-drawn characters they were commissioned for.

I have strange request. I'd like post apocalyptic stuff. People are great but especially landscapes and atmosphere. Bonus points if you can deliver scenes from an eerie fungal apocalypse where an alien ecology invaded and displaced the terrestrial. Basically the world from the last part of Zack Parson's Liminal States if you've read that.

It's a giant sea monster with an enormous maw underneath the ship, with some light clouds in the sky. You can still see the ship's wake behind them, it's not being obscured by the monster because the monster is in the water below.
