Updated graphics and compatibility would be huge, but there's tons of ant stuff to sperg out about. Varying species of ants are a big one since the original only dealt with common urban ants, and leafcutters, slavemakers and so on have completely different societies. There's also the possibility of different environments and materials for building :krad: 3D colonies, better colony AI, pseudo-physics focused on surface tension rather than gravity and oh god look what you've done now I'm excited for a game that's never going to be made

Well, that French Empire game is pretty much won. The German Empire is no more, Syndicalism on the trashheap of history, I own most of Africa personally and have most of Europe as fragmented puppet states. I could beat down the Habsburgs, Spain etc. but it'd just be boring, and taking over as someone else to bring down the monster I've created would be all but impossible. Time for a break and then another challenge, I'd forgotten how good DH is compared to the awfulness of HoI3.

What's an interesting, challenging non-European country to play in KR that has a good amount of content? Preferably something Syndicalist or otherwise potentially lefty so I can get rid of the bad taste in my mouth from setting up all those right-wing authoritarian regimes everywhere. Also more or less naval-focused as I've had enough of grinding across Europe with giant hordes of dudes.

Have you tried to play the American civil war? It can be quite challening as you have to quickly build up an army of militia to and fight a threeway free for all for the US, and you often have a far longer frontline than you have troop numbers so at times you can actually have to be forced to sacrifice land to obtain a better position to defend or strike out from. For syndicalists you have the CSA, but they are generally acknowledged to be the easiest of the American factions (if you discount the PSA which can largely stay out of fighting all together), if you want a challenge though you should go for the AUS as they have the most vulnerable position and the weakest industrial position and you may be able to wet your leftist appetitie as, after the civil war, you can take a hard turn to the left (ending up as a social democracy or radical socialist) if you choose to consistently implement Huey Long's policies and be somewhat lenient towards the vanquished Syndicalists. The problem ofcourse with doing this as the AUS is that it seems the KR devs didn't really test this scenario out fully, and that going over to the left changes out all your ministers to left wing and liberal politicians (of which the AUS has painfully few, so it is very limited and shallow, and you lose Huey Long), which really makes no sense especially as its the result of events representing the policy of the leader of the AUS, so if you want to do that I'd recommend that you either edit the ministers list for the AUS to atleast include a Social Democratic, Social Liberal or Radical Socialist version of Huey Long and maybe a few of the other politicians so that you can actually do this (I have done a bit of modding there myself to attempt to fix this, so I guess if you want to do this I could send you the files).

Workers of the attacked nest can fight or flee. In the host species Proformica, the most common behaviour is flight, probably because hosts almost always lose fights.[5] Most studies on the raiding behavior of species in the F. sanguinea complex confirm that slave raiders usually rout their opponents, who typically flee in a state of panic alarm, and that aggressive encounters, when they occur, are brief and do not result in the death of adult individuals from either species. However, when large colonies of slave species offer resistance during raids, prolonged fighting is possible, and many workers of both species can be killed.[9]

quote:

However, in some cases, the slave ants rebel against their slave-maker ants, killing a large number of the slave-maker ant offspring.[12] The reason behind this is because "slaves can gain indirect fitness benefits by reducing parasite pressure on nearby host colonies, because these are often closely related to the slaves".[12] Thus, the slave ants protect their native colonies from further raids by slave-maker ants.[12]

Supercolonies

quote:

Until 2000, the largest known ant supercolony was on the Ishikari coast of Hokkaidō, Japan. The colony was estimated to contain 306 million worker ants and one million queen ants living in 45,000 nests interconnected by underground passages over an area of 2.7 km2 (670 acres).[2] In 2000, an enormous supercolony of Argentine ants was found in Southern Europe (report published in 2002). Of 33 ant populations nested along the 6,004-kilometre (3,731 mi) stretch along the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts in Southern Europe, 30 belonged to one supercolony with estimated millions of nests and billions of workers, interspersed with three populations of another supercolony.[3] The researchers[which?] claim that this case of unicoloniality cannot be explained by loss of their genetic diversity due to the genetic bottleneck of the imported ants.[citation needed] In 2009, it was demonstrated that the largest Japanese, Californian and European Argentine ant supercolonies were in fact part of a single global "megacolony".[4]

Another supercolony, measuring approximately 100 km (62 mi) wide, was found beneath Melbourne, Australia in 2004.[5]

Ants got nothing on hornets, especially not when it comes to murder, well at least bees got nothing on hornets probably because murdering tens of thousdands (largely because the hornets' natural armor is too thick ffor the bee stingers to reliably penetrate, and that the hornets release an attack pheromone which triggers a murder frenzy where they just grab any bee standing in their way and decapitate them adn throw away their lifeless corpes, each one can kill about 30-40 bees a minute this way) of them in a few hours gets those flying murder machines a crapoload of delicious honey and larvae.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2P7Q1ncgcoY

An insects strategy game where you could play between various hive species and such would be pretty badass, make hornets a mongol horde (though there would really only need to be some tens of them) that just comes in and kills everything in a murderous decapitating frenzy for what seems seemingly no reason.

e: This might be better because it describes the hornets' attack pheromone

Also termites are pretty cool

Wikipedia posted:

The specialization of the soldier caste is principally a defence against predation by ants. Ants represent the single biggest threat to termite mounds and nests. Soldier Termite species armed with enlarged heads and powerful jaws can provide only limited defense and delay to a determined ant attack. Ants are more agile, often have functioning eyesight, and attack in an orchestrated and cooperative manner. Termite soldiers are not evolved in this way, and defend the mound individually against multiple attacking ants resulting in an obvious and observable disadvantage. Ant species, such as the Formica, can deliver paralyzing stings in addition to their own powerful mandibles. Though powerful and formidable many species of termite soldiers can provide only a suicidal delay to an ant invasion, but one that observably results in preservation of the mound by industrious workers who react quickly to close off tunnels vital to access the deep interior of the mound. The wide range of jaw types and phragmotic heads provides methods that effectively block narrow termite tunnels against ant entry. A tunnel-blocking soldier can rebuff attacks from many ants. Usually more soldiers stand by behind the initial soldier so once the first one falls another soldier will take the place. In cases where the intrusion is coming from a breach that is larger than the soldier's head, defence requires special formations where soldiers form a phalanx-like formation around the breach and bite at intruders or exude toxins from the nasus or fontanelle. This formation involves self-sacrifice because once the workers have repaired the breach during fighting, no return is provided, thus leading to the death of all defenders. Another form of self-sacrifice is performed by Southeast Asian tar baby termites (Globitermes sulphureus). The soldiers of this species commit suicide by autothysis—rupturing a large gland just beneath the surface of their cuticles. The thick, yellow fluid in the gland becomes very sticky on contact with the air, entangling ants or other insects which are trying to invade the nest.

also, ant stuff

wikipedia posted:

Myrmecophilous (ant-loving) caterpillars of the butterfly family Lycaenidae (e.g., blues, coppers, or hairstreaks) are herded by the ants, led to feeding areas in the daytime, and brought inside the ants' nest at night. The caterpillars have a gland which secretes honeydew when the ants massage them. Some caterpillars produce vibrations and sounds that are perceived by the ants.

[...]

Some termites, including Nasutitermes corniger, form associations with certain ant species to keep away predatory ant species.
