Oh god. The memories. An AT&T Unix machine almost exactly like that was my intro to UNIX and the Internet circa 1988. A 1200baud(maybe it was 2400) connection to UCSD and I was in geek heaven. None of my fellow students understood me when I said it was going to change everything. Still a *nix geek 25+ years later.

My favorite bit that involves failure was the airport fire chief trying to extinguish the engine fire with water. There is no way his puny pumps could compete with the near mach speed cloud ingestion that the motor is designed to withstand. :downsbravo:

Looks like a kingpin bearing failure which has destroyed the tie rod. Probably not a massive pain cost to repair, but a HUGE pain in the arse as you need to fully dismantle the knuckles to fix it.

Yeah, it got to the point I almost knew the entire boot process by heart just by listening to it. Re-installing AT&T System V Unix off 30+ 5-1/4 floppy disks was an experience I could do without, however. I've been forced to learn Windows/AD, but I'm still the only one where I work who can work on the Linux/Solaris/AIX machines.

The 3B1 has a bump in the case under the monitor to accommodate a full height 40MB Miniscribe drive, the 7300 was smooth. My dad still has 3 of them on a shelf somewhere (I think my dad may qualify as a computer hoarder). I was never on EFnet, but did learn UUCP pathing to download things from a place called "The Shop". I also wasted countless hours playing the original rogue.

Not sure where to post this but there's an airbag recall which could cause a horrible mechanical failure which would ruin your day or kill you, and it covers a lot of brands. It's more likely to occur in hot climates. Not sure if the word is getting out on this or not so apologize if it's already been posted.

http://www.nhtsa.gov/About+NHTSA/Press+Releases/Vehicle-owners-with-defective-airbags-urged-to-take-immediate-action

E: WHat I roughly heard yesterday is that the airbag can explode in the wrong way and send metal fragments into the cabin.

E2:

quote:

Auto safety expert Sean Kane told ABC News the problem with the Takata airbags is its internal inflator.

“[It’s] the canister which sits in the center of the airbag, it’s like a metal can,” Kane said. “When that’s ignited, it’s overpressurizing the canister and the canister is exploding, much like an IED [improvised explosive device], and sending shrapnel into the occupants of the vehicle.”

Kane said that the explosions have caused “severe lacerations” and a reported four deaths.

Oh sure, getting speckled with hot stuff definitely happens. It's the price you pay for not getting your chest caved in by a steering column, and fair enough. But they have chemicals in them that retard actual flame fronts from developing.

Speaking of airbags, that Takata recall has already turned very nasty :(

Didn't one of the first cars with airbags have a design "feature" that vented the hot gasses directly onto the drivers' chest/lap?
