I'm looking forward to the Twisty backstory next episode, but I'd almost rather they keep it a total mystery. This was a really good episode. Probably about as good as it's been since the first season.

Man, I'm glad that the moment I started thinking of Dell as a person, he does something even loving worse to remind me that he's scum of the earth.

Cried during Ethel's story. Cried during Meep's funeral.

Sorry for the interruption, but what'd I miss after Dell's failed handy? The exchange between him and Bassett after he slammed her against the wall?

Basically she was all like "touch me again and I'm leaving" and he looked really vulnerable and human for a second-- aaaand then it was gone.

Come to me .... and live forever.
The twins weren't as prominently featured this time around, so it's easy to forget, but there was a pretty significant plot point introduced. Namely that Dot was having a dream in which a doctor separates them so she can live a normal, happy life with fame and a husband, and Bette dies as a result. And then when they wake, Dot admits the dream wasn't just a dream, is how she really feels, and actually does expect to separate from Bette at some point, even if it kills her in the process.

Bette just sort of took it given how their relationship is, but it kinda throws a wrench in the idea that she would eventually kill Dot at Elsa's encouragement.

Or, it might encourage it. It's kill or be killed for Bette now.

Reign on me.
This season should be called American Horror Story: Twisty and Dandy because that is the only part of the show I really care about.

The Freakshow is just filler with some great moments in between (Anything Kathy Bates, Dennis O'Hare and his giant dong, the horrifying dream scene). I wish Edward Moredrake was a regular freak instead of a 2 episode arc because he is pretty awesome and I think "Make the freaks divulge their darkest secrets to live" could be a pretty cool running theme for this season.

The Jessica Lange music numbers don't bother me because of the song choices though this weeks felt more forced than the awesome Bowie number. I hated the Criminal performance though. Over-produced, out of place, awful forced mosh pit. It really felt like it was from Glee.

The sum of these haphazardly typed thoughts is that I am enjoying this season much more than Coven but I really don't care about any of the main cast outside of Bates. Evan Peters could die next episode and I would be totally cool with it.

If they are going to be tossing musical numbers around, they better give one to Patti :colbert:

Also, Edward Mordrake was possibly a real person, though obviously his condition is pretty embellished. There are a few historical references to him, but it's just as likely that it was all apocryphal. Diprosopus could account for him having "two faces," though as far as I know they would have to be two faces side by side rather than on the front and back. Pretty neat that they added him into the show.

Y'know, I was thinking: The Name Game in season two was Lange's idea, right? What if she's the one all like, "Well, this is my last season, I'm going to make the most of it, and I want tons of musical numbers!" And Murphy agrees because of course he would.

I love the line "I find clowns delightful".
It shows this huge schism between LALALA I LIVE IN THE 50S AND NOTHING BAD EVER HAPPENS and the reality of the screaming, hysterical what-the-gently caress-is-wrong-with-you-people child. Is it commentary of how sleepwalker-ish that era was? Because it feels like it is. The last episode with Dandy's mother bringing Twisty in being kind of a glaring statement about it.

So, what? The freak show represents all of the repressed monstrosities of the 50s? All of its 'twisted' (Oh god. Did I just do that?) bowels? How it was so obsessed with everything being normal and perfect?

And why the gently caress am I even attempting to analyze this goddamn show

So what's the deal? Are Bette/Dot going to become the female Mordrake? Because it kind of feels like it.

Maybe Elsa's character arc isn't just fiction :tinfoil:

edit: I could see them having Mordrake take one of the two heads or something. I think someone mentioned that filming with both of them on the screen at once was a pain in the rear end, so I wouldn't be surprised if they did something to split them up sooner rather than later. That way she could come back as a sweet disembodied ghost head and they wouldn't technically have to lose an actor.

The preview kinda made it look like Mordrake might end up taking Desiree, though.

I thought I was out last week, but I watched it last night and now I'm firmly in to see how awful this can get. It feels like it's on the way to surpassing Coven already. I hope Twisty remains a pointless side story for the whole season.

I'm enjoying this season. Gods and Monsters was the best musical performance yet and I adore Kathy Bates and her bizarre accent. Although, I'm not looking forward to yet another love triangle and I'm sure there's gonna be one.

I want the seal guy to have more scenes, he's my favorite of the supporting cast.

Yeah, seal guy is really a standout. That's another thing that bothers me, though, is that it goes to all this effort to say "freaks are real people too!" and goes so far as to hire real people with physical disabilities as actors, and then... they're just the background cast. Most of them have shown they can act (minus the littlest girl, who I can't understand a word of), but the only ones that have plots are the normal people with prosthetics. It's kind of annoying.

A similar thing happened with Jim Jefferies where he went out of his way to hire someone with muscular dystrophy to play a part on his show, but during all the audtions most of them were either severely disabled and not really able to act, or were just bad actors in general. Only one person had stood out from the croud, but it had turned out he was faking having MD the entire time, adn then didn't tell him it was an act but tried to pretend that he had it the whole time.

He ended up hiring DJ Qualls to fill that role. Acting background and acting out as a leading role are entirely different things, and much harder to find really good talent for that.

The seal guy has proven himself to be a solid actor so far though. I think it would've been better if they would've given him all of Jimmy's rants about how "freaks are people too", it would've fit his character better.

Elsa: "I will not be so easily convinced by a pretty face!"
*falls for lovely fortune telling hook, line and sinker*

That scene actually had me burst out laughing, it made no sense at all. I feel like most of the Freak Show subplots are like that, half-assed and I'm not invested in these characters enough to care much. Twisty and Dandy sideshow is operating on dream logic and is genuinely creepy and uncomfortable and I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

Seems like most of the freaks aren't really getting any characterization beyond "are freaks, feel sorry for them!"

Grape Juice Vampire

Most of the minor cast also have a lot of their own things going on. Mat Fraser is in a band and does independent performances and like a million other things, and Erika Ervin is a model/fitness trainer. Maybe they're just mad busy since this is just a side gig for them.

Except everything she said was true and came to pass. Plus Elsa knows the performance is just as if not more than important than the accuracy in fortune telling.

Yeah I think it's pretty transparent that she's going to wind up being an actual fortune teller. I can see it coming from a mile away.

Also, is it just me or are we getting much less of Lange than in prior seasons? She seems to have been relegated to a side character. It's odd, but then again I wouldn't blame Lange for wanting more of a side role at her age.

The first episode I was really wondering if we were going to find out that David Bowie was this season's Stevie Nicks, because he's a time-traveling space god or whatever. Maybe instead it's that' she's the future writer of al pop music (or it's like Bioshock Infinite and she's channeling the future). Given this show's history, it'll blow my mind if we actually get any payoff for the anachronistic song choices.

Everything she said was vague and pointedly based on the details of the room she observed. Elsa bought it either because it was very much what she wanted to hear or she recognized it as a good fortune-telling performance; that doesn't mean the character really has psychic powers.
