Good news to those in Ma On Shan: the Roving Basic Law Super Happy Fun Exhibition has been deployed to your location at a very convenient time where you can learn about the basic law with computer and stall games and why it can never ever ever change and the decisions of the Chinese Standing Committee is perfect and can also never change ever.

Wait how is Ireland not on that map? I mean we're a deeply racist country with lots of Chinese immigrants (relatively). Also I'm never going to stop finding it hilarious when an ethnically Chinese person answers me in a super thick Galway accent. It's slightly funnier than an ethnically Irish person answering in a super thick Galway accent.

It's also worth noting that (post Mao) leaves a pretty massive asterisk next to the claim.

It's not just about growth rates, but what's been done since liberalization. China has used its opportunities to leave India far behind on power, infrastructure, health, military and intelligence modernization, sanitation, the list goes on. India's hosed up democracy and poor leadership has led to results that are pretty apparent for everyone to see. I know rural China isn't that great but it's not quite the sub-saharan africa level that most of India is.

I think the test has already come and gone, and India's failed miserably in comparison.

Nope, it's pretty much all about growth rates. China's been ticking along wonderfully since liberation (aside from Dan annual protest or 100,000) but when the economy stops growing sufficiently that'll be the real test of the system. Frankly I doubt the system will survive while India's, hosed though it might be, can and has survived.

Ebola can't get here soon enough and if the Chinese response is its normal wilfully incompetent self it may do a lot of good in the long term.

Others, who also talked about the sale of body parts, attributed the increase in this to the up-coming elections---saying they needed the parts to do rituals so that they could stay in power.

The Chinese are rather less personally oriented than, say, Americans, and tend to be team players. This is embedded in the culture itself- possibly because of the historical influence of Confucianism.

For instance, if someone catches a cold, they wear a mask-not just to prevent colds spreading, but as a virtuous act of community responsibility-
and also because that cold may be... something else.
I would expect a Chinese person would reliably self-quarantine if they thought they were sick- to do otherwise would be shameful.

Oh ebola :ohdear:

Short update. There was a anti-occupy rally held in Victora park by a bunch of blue ribbons. When journalists appear they were heckled and beat up, things got really ugly. A reporter's tie got ripped off and a camera man got attacked. The journalist labour union decided to not cover any more blue ribbon news from now on.

What weirds me out is that the blue ribbon guys were flying banners and slogans of "SUPPORT THE LAW, SUPPORT HK POLICE" and then proceed to either dump soy sauce over newspapers and hit journalists. And then they have the audacity to shake a policemen's hand :wtf:

http://www.scmp.com/article/1625066/journalists-condemn-attacks-reporters-covering-protests

So tonight admiralty and other places had a whole bunch of people show up again. Seriously, why is there always some poo poo causing people to come back out.

And someone made this video, I do look forward to the art made and videos made by this movement.

Yeah lots of them are. Some of them are police officers, families and friends of police officers. But doing violent poo poo and not getting arrested is undermining police authority a lot more than a bunch of people sitting on the streets. Seeing events like this just make the general public much less sympathetic to police officers.

I don't understand why the efforts to undermine the protesters are so bad and low level. Geeze, instead of hiring old people yelling and throwing poo poo, why not just have a bunch of crying kids and crying teachers urging people to go home. Or have a cop make a youtube video and hang himself in front of the protesters (ok a bit too extreme). Or just have a bunch of blue ribbon guys silently hang banners and block the view of the occupiers. Forcibly taking down barricades won't work because that just makes more people show up and rebuild poo poo.

I guess it's hard for authoritarian governments to get sympathy huh?

I largely support the police. I also largely support the protestors.

I don't support the dickwads who have hijacked the phrase "SUPPORT THE POLICE" - but then coming from the "Alliance for Peace and Democracy" who seem to be against both of those things, I shouldn't have expected anything less. I mean, it's implying that you can't possibly support the police unless you also want to sell your soul to CY. Thus any protestors are dirty terrorist anarchist baby rapers or whatever.
