I wonder if it's not even just the 3DS that made them decide not to include the Ice Climbers, but eight player mode. I guess if it were only the latter, they could just disable them like they will most stages, but that'd blow.

Because of an insidious train of thought that the characters are somehow competing for a limited number of slots and one being chosen means that they're somehow "stealing" it from whatever character or franchise the person prefers.

They were brought back for nostalgia's sake, but Nintendo also went to the extra effort of updating their designs, and giving each one their own personality. I mean granted they're not having full scenes showing how robust their characterization is, but at this point they're popular not JUST because of nostalgia. It's cool that Nintendo gave them each some kind of personality. It's something they try to do with a lot of their Mario characters, even minor ones.
