I'm trying NaNo again this year, failed a real NaNo once and a camp once, maybe the third time will be the charm? Gonna go ahead and add everyone who's posted already. My plan is to write a decent female lead who throws away her life to become an adventurer, then proceeds to fall in love with a dragon. http://nanowrimo.org/participants/argyleasterisk if you want to learn more about this silly, cliche fantasy/romance novel!!!

Besides a terrible attempt in 2012 I've always avoided NaNo. No longer. I'm worried about letting myself down. Here is me: http://nanowrimo.org/participants/poshalligator/

I've tried NaNo twice. Burned out both years due to not having any real definite plan about anything. Mostly because I didn't decided for sure to do it until October 31st. At least the first year. This year I've got an actual built world and a rough outline of where I want everything to go. Which is a massive step up from taking a random idea I had in the back of a notebook somewhere and trying to bullshit it into a plot. I'll still probably burn out, but at least I'll feel better about it. http://nanowrimo.org/participants/urbanspaceman23

I participated in 2010 and won, then tried to salvage some of what I wrote later but it was mostly terrible. I distinctly remember having written 35k words and wondering what the overall plot was going to be. This year I've got some characters and somewhat of a plot planned out, hopefully it will be less of a mess (but I doubt it). The plan was to participate last year, but I forgot about the whole thing. In 2010 I tried to keep it grounded and serious, this year I'm doing some sort of young adult/science fiction/urban fantasy thing. It's what I find the most pleasure in reading, so why the hell not Profile here.

Haven't done NaNo for years. Won both times I tried. Thinking about doing it again, though I'm trying to decide if I should finish my first NaNo (currently sitting at just over 100k) which would consist of finishing and cleaning it up to get 50k or trying something new. WWGD (what would goons do)?

I'm doing it! I'm expanding on the last brawl I did for sebmojo. It's a story about a girl who lives in a society underground and is poisoned when she was goofing off without a gas mask. The only known antidote is extracted from a plant found in a history book printed from a hundred years ago. The biggest problem is that the plant grows on the surface of their planet and no one has ever returned from the trip. Will she be able to save herself? Or will she be chicken poo poo and lay down to die! Tune in!!! http://nanowrimo.org/participants/i-am-black-jesus

I'll make myself an official goon entrant: http://nanowrimo.org/participants/inthesto As a heads up, Write or Die is a handy app for meeting word goals, especially when you're really squeezed for time. My 2012 novel frequently met the 1,667 word count in as little as 45 minutes per day. Yes, putting constraints and conditions on your writing is going to make it worse, even for NaNoWriMo, but firing it up and putting your nose to the grindstone for 10 - 15 minutes can often be the jumpstart you need to get the writing momentum for the day.

I'm hoping to land a job before the end of November, and I'm betting that, once THAT happens, I'm hosed for inspiration to write. So with that in mind, I might start early, but limit the writing to 30 days, and post my progress as it happened, (day 1: Nov 1's numbers, day 2: Nov 2's numbers etc). I still intend to nail a 50K novel in 30 days. With no job right now, I'd be an idiot not to use this time wisely. What's that you say? I should use this time to find a job? Go gently caress yourself. I'm a writer.

What kind of prepping (if any) are you doing? My friend got me Ready, Set, Novel! last week, which is supposed to be a workbook specifically tailored to get aspiring writers through NaNoWriMo. I don't know how useful it is, though. Since I have (somewhat of) the plot and characters worked out already I don't think I will be using it all that much, but it has some exercises for fleshing out the characters which I think I might do. Just one week to go!

oliven posted:What kind of prepping (if any) are you doing? I've been planning out my scenes fairly thoroughly. Story Engineering by Larry Brooks has been pretty helpful. Not a book I'd recommend someone buy as it comes off like a 10 page guideline fluffed into a 278 book, but if you can borrow it then go for it. It's been pretty invaluable for me in terms of plotting and story structure. I figure I might also start writing some of my story now, just so that I don't have an empty page to intimidate me come the 1st.

oliven posted:What kind of prepping (if any) are you doing? You can just use a google doc if that's all you've got. I've mapped out my story's key points, key events, named 5 or 6 characters. The fun part now is just letting my brain percolate on the story, rolling it over, picking it apart for hidden gems like a badder antagonist hiding in the shadows, or someone who WAS a protag is acting under false pretenses. I know some folks like to just get going at page one and throw characters into a room to see what happens; but i prefer mapping it out. Scrivener is great for that - I've got everything on notecards right now, and I can move them around, change events, add notes to the note cards, like, the note card starts out as a scene, and then I add little details in that I want to touch on. All that, so, by the time I sit down and start really writing, that's when I'm throwing people into a room with a start and a finish goal. It's sort of like slightly scripted improv I suppose.

Went to the kickoff party today for my local area. I felt out of place, because lots of the people were there for their 8th nano or whatever. It also honestly felt like "tumblr irl." Lots of cat owning middle-aged women making meme references.

Don't think I've even wrote a novel last year, but I liked it better than the first time I did it. Probably just gonna write a bunch of short stories with the same sets of characters instead. Not like the NaNo word count machine caught me "cheating" last year when I did it. Apparently this counts as being a "rebel" but gently caress it.

I started back in high school, I think, pretty early on, and failed consistently every year I tried (until I gave up!) and then forgot my old username and lost the old email address. UNTIL LAST YEAR. I finally won. This year I'm going to complete the first draft of the novel I started last year. I've set up a new account in honor of being less of a poo poo lord. Profile includes an awful plot outline instead of a synopsis and the first 1/4th of last year's efforts. http://nanowrimo.org/participants/redtonic

Honestly, I think just starting is the biggest win. If you give up half-way through, or if you write but don't nail 50,000 by 11/30, reflect on the big picture. The whole point is to get people writing... especially those of us who've said, "hell I could do that" for decades. DECADES. Everytime I fell behind and was ready to drop it, I went back because I was impressed that I'd accomplished anything at all. If you don't win by their standards, don't let that stop you. Keep on writing your lovely Firefly fanfic. It'll become something far better... if nothing else, a great talking point in AA.
