Neil Cicierega just released a comedic mash-up album over the weekend called "Mouth Silence":

Both that and the first one ("Mouth Sounds") are amazing. I don't even know how to describe how brilliant these are, and that's coming from someone who really kinda dislikes mashups as a concept. I feel like you have to be a certain age to really get it but I think like 90% of this message board fits.

Both albums are pretty good, though I feel he lets good pairings overstay their welcome a lot of the time (the B52/Psycho track on Silence, a few different tracks on Sounds).

He made a video for the best track off Silence, by the way:

The answer is, mate, because I want to do you slowly. There has to be a bit of sport in this for all of us. In the psychological battle stakes, we are stripped down and ready to go. I want to see those ashen-faced performances; I want more of them. I want to be encouraged. I want to see you squirm.
Only just got around to listening to Mouth Silence/Mouth Sounds and man, I wish I'd listened sooner! Awesome stuff, give it a go if you still haven't for whatever reason.

Really liked pokemon and furries.

The tracks, not the actual things.

Great samples all around, I like these kinds of mashups a lot more than just taking the vocals of one song and loosely throwing them on top of another song's beat, that poo poo is lazy.

There's a new Team Teamwork album out which mixes Katamari tracks with hiphop stuff. It's....not good? At least on the first listen of a few tracks. But still, someone might like it more than me.

I love Katamari and I love hip-hop. With that said, most of the tracks are just awful. The only ones worth listening to are "More Than Twenty Questions" and "International Anthem for Players", those are pretty drat good actually.

Mashup albums seem to be far and few between these days. A lot of artists do singles and then releases mixes of them after a few months. Soundcloud has also, unfortunately, closed a few mashup artist's accounts for copyright infringement so unless you were following them when it happened it's hard to find them. I actually use Soundcloud to get all my mashup fixins so here's the artists I think are great:

GLDN Collective is basically a producing label for most of the mashup artists I will be linking. They do a lot of seasons mixes that include a ton of varying tracks.

Not a lot of these artists have consistent themes throughout all their tracks so just listen to them and see if you like them!

At the risk of :wtc:, I uploaded a smash-up mix I made, so if you have 90 minutes you want to spend listening to silly songs overlaid, you can do that here. Feel free to skip the '90s techno section after the Bill Cosby intro; recommended sections include the Haddaway/Eurythmics/Wang Chung bit, happy hardcore Bilbo Baggins ballad, Daler Mehndi/Whitney Houston into "Windowlicker", and speedcore Linkin Park. Best-suited for people with extreme ADD.

It must be hard to get something coherent and audibly-pleasing when you're trying to cram all the tracks together simultaneously. It might work better as a medley, where there's only a couple of tracks audible at a time.

I really liked Earworm, was a really huge fan, but I haven't heard a really solid thing he's done since the early editions of his year-end mashups. I think the top 25 billboard list limitation is a huge huge flaw (especially nowadays where the pop scene is a lot less homogenous) and spinning his own list with ones that'd work better together (or at least ones he has the drat stems for) would be a better idea

I mean, compare this 2009 mashup to a more recent one:

He's got some insight in his Rolling Stone interview

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/iggy-azalea-taylor-swift-dj-earworm-mash-up-united-state-pop-2014-20141203

Look at 2009, it's built on Ive Got a Feeling. Which yes, is a horrible awful song but also crazy catchy (like say, Party Rock Anthem). So it's easy to build off it. There wasn't much this year.

Seriously, name the popular dance-y top songs from this year. Timber and Shake it Off. Anything else? Not much to work with.

Earworm has always struck me as still being in that old mashup school of thought. Where the lyrics need to flow as well as the music. And he sacrifices a lot sometimes to stick with that. It makes him VERY hit or miss. When he's bad, he's forgeable. When he's good, it's platinum. That being said every time Ive heard him play "live" its been amazing. But playing a club and making tracks are totally different things.

Skouteris and Mashup Germany have had the most consistent year end recaps recently.

I really dont like the Pop Danthology style of mashup that is not a coherent piece from start to end. Danthology is a review of the music from the last year. With some mashup-y bits. But it's not a complete piece of music from start to finish. More like a medley.
I know it is just personal preference. It's why I've never been a fan of Girl Talk.

But then, I am a total mashup hipster who complains about how there's rarely any good mashups these days, forever spoiled because when I first got into the scene, using stuff like Journey was brand new and amazing. The nostalgia for DJs like Earworm, Lobsterdust, and (of course) AplusD will always make me love them, no matter the quality of recent releases.

16 days till Im back at Bootie SF. Can't come fast enough.

This Metafilter post has links to all the original music videos used in United State of Pop 2014.

It was a good resource to catch up with pop music from this year. But even though I sometimes listen to pop radio stations on my commute, I only knew about half of these tracks.
