Well, I didn't think I'd ever have sympathy for a scary clown with a mouth like a smashed-in pumpkin, but... drat, Twisty. I was half-sure Dandy was going to succeed in sawing the hostage girl in half. But, I guess my mantra for this season is just gonna be 'fuckin' Dandy'. 'You ruined my Halloween!' E: the girl in the box was the fake fortune-teller, not the hostage girl? I couldn't really tell. LadyPictureShow fucked around with this message at 03:55 on Oct 30, 2014 |

I mean, Twisty is arguably the best thing about this season so far, and now he's apparently gone four episodes in. And look at this now, the town loves the freaks? Something about this feels a little too uneasy.

I didn't think Twisty would end up with a back story like that. For me at least, it came out of left field. It seems Dandy is ready to take up the mantle of evil clown. He's no Twisty though.

Aside from the killings and the head showing to the people chained in his bus, all he was seen doing was some variation of a trick intended to make people smile. I just didn't expect him to be probably the most sympathetic of the characters by his end. PS gently caress dandy

I'm sad to see him go too, although I think Dandy is a more than worthy replacement. Twisty's arc was pretty fantastic for what probably amounted to a half hour of screentime. In general, they've been doing a really good job this season of not having every character in every episode, which was a huge problem last season. They were trying to accelerate everyone's story every episode, and with as huge and as talented of a cast as this show has, it's a real shame to try to fit their character development into one 5 minute scene per episode. Dell, Desiree, and Bette/Dot were barely in this episode, and Ethel wasn't in it at all, which actually ended up being awesome - we got to see the backstories of two main characters (in all their hosed up glory) and two well-done side characters as a bonus bit of character investment. In addition to all the other crazy poo poo that happened. Twisty's story was especially heartbreaking. And that scene from next week's preview of Bette/Dot's heads in the tank has got to be a dream sequence or something. No way they would spoil that in a preview. Wes Bentley was loving awesome. I still hate that face on the back of his head, possibly more than Twisty's mouth.

Agreed. I just don't want the show to devolve into a bunch of catty infighting like Coven did, and now that the town loves them and Twisty is dead, Dandy is the only real thing standing in the way of that happening. Actually, scratch that, the con man who wants to kill and sell them is too, but y'know. Also, full disclosure, I wasn't really into Twisty's backstory. I kind of wanted him to a be just a deviant, murderous clown toying with his victims. For three episodes, that's exactly what we've seen. He killed people in cold blood, he stalked the toy store clerk, he even rolled his eyes at Dandy. And now this dirty, disgusting spree killer ... is just a misunderstood simpleton, who thought he was really helping those kids by killing their parents? I don't know, I'm not totally buying it. I get his mouth was blown off and he can't talk, and I get that he got the robot and performed the clown tricks to be accommodating, but everything else screamed psychopath, not upset manchild. And Mordrake actually took him too, so does that mean he was lying about the whole thing? I guess I'm just put off by how sudden it all was. It's not that it doesn't make sense, it's that it doesn't really gel well. Rushing an explanation/ending after presenting such an interesting concept, is something this show has always had a problem with.

Didn't they all have pretty sad stories, though? Is Twisty's story any sadder than having the birth of your only child turned into a grotesque spectacle? How do you quantify it, besides, "Which one makes the face on the back of his head come hardest?"

All the freaks are damaged in some way but none are past earthly redemption/acceptance/mercy like Twisty. Sooner or later he would have been found out and strung up.

Maybe it's that Twisty never saw the darkness in his soul. All of the others did. Well, other than Elsa, who almost bit it.

Twisty's also the only one who willingly became what he is. You could argue he is a "true freak" in that respect.
|
# ? Oct 30, 2014 06:26 |
For Mordrake's reasoning I'm going with what Twisty and Elsa had in common, they both sort of denied what made them freaks. Even when he was talking about murdering parents and other horrible things, the clown never once considered that he was just as screwed up as the "mean freaks" he just kept insisting he was a good person. Elsa as well lives in her own little delusional world where she is a star and might become famous by performing in her freakshow, not as a freak but as a normal person. All while avidly denying to anyone else that she might be screwed up too. No one else he interviewed did that sort of thing, they all just admitted how crappy and shameful their lives have been and that this was basically the only real option as far as they could see.

I'm posting this through shielded eyes but please tell me Freak Show is more like season one and two and not remotely like season three (good, for one). Everything I've seen out of it sounds amazing, but I don't want to get my hopes up again: Twisty the Clown, Michael Chiklis, Neil Patrick Harris, and Lily Rabe playing her AHS: Asylum character. Is it at least moving faster than Coven?

So they introduce a ghost for the soul* purpose of having an episode of pure exposition (and literally no other reason lmao) and then immediately get rid of the best character this season after giving us his backstory (which would make his arc going forward way more interesting). Goddamn the writing on this show, and I still like it *edited in pun

I loved everything about this episode except for the welcoming committee at the end. It seemed like a dream sequence or something, and not in a good way. Just way too forced. But still, I'm very satisfied with the whole thing. As far as the expository ghost - they took the expository thing to a such a theatrical, showy level that I love it. At least they didn't try to hide it. They just went all the loving way with it, which i kind of admire. Not sure how I feel about Dandy. I only like him when Francis Conroy is interacting with him. Otherwise, he still feels pretty hollow to me. MadSparkle fucked around with this message at 19:41 on Oct 30, 2014 |

As in, I'm sure no one is even going to mention the fact that they summoned a ghost and he terrorized the entire camp ever again, unless he comes back.

This episode was the closest thing to a good episode this season, but god-drat was the dialogue awful. The scene where Elsa gets her legs chainsawed off was very affecting and scary, and then she says all matter of fact "They call them.... 'snuff films.'" Or the legless lady saying "To me those legs weren't part of him, they were just a symbol of everything I'd never have." Ugh. I loved how goofy and colorful the ghost effects looked, that's more the direction that the show ought to be going in. Just dumb insanity like season two, because any time it tries to get serious it falls flat on it's face.

Dandy has to be one of the show's most repulsive characters and I really hope the writers don't try and backtrack and give him some tortured past to justify his actions. Twisty's back story gives me hope since he was oblivious to morality.

This season has been the most coherent since season one. At least so far.

Anyone who has a nipple over their fine crystal bottle of whiskey or whatever the gently caress has no soul as far as I am concerned. It would be kinda neat if he was possessed by the devil and Lily Rabe appeared to help with an exorcism. And then they realize HE REALLY IS THE DEVIL so there is nothing to exorcise. This would be the season where Dandy's mother gives up on being a mother altogether because she sucks at it and just becomes the angel of death when she finds Patti LaBelle's body. No, too much crossover poo poo. They won't do that. I wouldn't want them to anyway.
