How do you manage to be more repulsed at Batgirl #35 than the previous 34 issues?

On Eternal, someone remembered that we were dealing with the loving Spectre, neat. But now the whole subplot feels like a colossal waste of time, if the endgoal was just to destroy Arkham there were plenty of other options to do that without forcing a magical angle into the story. Besides, whoever thought that turning Blackfire into a demon was good idea, totally missed the whole point of his character. The Harley Quinn annual has just driven home the fact she really is DC's Deadpool, way too wacky for my taste but I really enjoyed Stejpan Sejic drawing for DC. A good time waster and a relationship between Harley and Ivy is all but confirmed now.

I find it hard to believe believe that no matter how much you hate the dialogue in Batgirl it's that much more offensive than anything else which DC is publishing right now.

I already had a problem that they bent over backwards to use Barbara Gordon as Batgirl when the New 52 was launched, but I thought Simone made the most out of it and stayed fairly true to the character while telling a good story. But then again, I seem to be in the minority of how much I enjoyed her run on Batgirl and especially the "Death of the Family" storyline as a whole. Now with this bizarre and unnecessary relaunch, they could have easily used Cassandra Cain or Stephanie Brown, or even an entirely new character, but decided to completely change Barbara's personality as well as jettison just about everything that's happened in issues 1-34. Suddenly she's the hard partying type that gets blackout drunk and apparently has sex with some guy she barely knows? It's as though they're bending over backwards just to use Barbara once again when they have so many other options available to them. By the way, I never said, "This book sucks and that is a fact" I said, "I loving hated it." If you're enjoying it, wonderful.

Senor Candle posted:I've seen a couple people complain about that. Unless I'm remembering wrong, she didn't actually sleep with him. Not that it would have been a bad thing if she did. I'm not sure why you would call this an "unnecessary relaunch". The New 52 was an unnecessary relaunch and I find this to be far more interesting that Barbara being the One True Batgirl. I'm not saying it's a bad thing on her part if she did, it's more the guy being an rear end in a top hat if he went ahead and did anything when she was obviously drunk enough to not remember a thing the next day. It also seemed out of character for Barbara, who had previously been someone responsible and in control almost to a fault. And the fact that the New 52 was an unnecessary relaunch makes this one even more so.

They have Babs' roommate explicitly say he slept on the couch after putting her to bed, I'm pretty sure.

I was more concerned with characters talking in hashtags and a plot that revolved around cell phone hacking and revenge porn sites than I was about Babs getting drunk and hooking up with a guy. I think I saw one of the creators on Twitter saying they understood the fans' complaints and not to worry, so maybe things even out. I'm not going to stop reading after one issue, personally.

And after that it's revealed that he didn't sleep with Babs he slept with the roommate! Wow, reading comprehension be damned. I wasn't a huge fan of the book, but that's more because I don't like hipsterish poo poo, and the book came off as trying too hard to be hipster, but I liked the art a lot.

As I understand it one of the creators of the book works as a DJ, so would lend the series an authentic tone as to what the youth of today act like. In this regard that's a good thing when it comes to attracting new readers. I'm still not going to read it because I just can't stand Barbara Gordon, but fair play to them for rolling the character in a new direction.

You cannot tell me Gotham Academy is aimed at middle-age dudes. And some of the dialogue in Batgirl made ME feel old, and I'm not even 30.

The longer Snyder stays around, especially with Marc Doyle leaving the line soon, the longer the Bat books have of sustaining a high quality level.

I think I also got the last of Steph's series for like 10 quid at the same place. Also one of the Red Robin trades for the same price, too. It seemed like the Batfamily had some really awesome books going on before the reboot.

Reborn era (from the end of Final Crisis/Battle for the Cowl to Flashpoint) was basically one of the best eras for Batbooks in a decade. Bruce dying for like a year or so was probably the best thing to happen to the Batline in a long time, ironically enough.

The combination of Tim Drake moving out from under Bruce's wing, Bruce dying, and Incorporated really broadened the focus of the Batfamily.
