You can't stop feeling disgusted with the country that launches a computer program that manages to lose for two whole weeks thousands of court cases, or that school has been going for over a month now and thousands of kids still don't have teachers for most of their classes. It's also incredibly despairing that Portugal Telecom which last year was considered one of the best companies in Europe, went up in smoke in less than week and is about to be sold off to the first Chinese or French dude that shows up at their door. poo poo is hosed up, no accountability, and no real future in sight. So when you talk to a lot of folk here about other countries like Germany, Britain, France, what you'll hear is that you can't compare them to Portugal, or even mention them in the same sentence. Worlds apart! poo poo may happen in those countries, but when it happens, heads roll. I think most people here would be totally okay with Merkel replacing the entire Portuguese government with German bureaucrats, because when those are caught cheating on their master degrees resign, here they became prime ministers. This goes through a three-pronged attack: *From the top, the EU itself gets power over the states *From the bottom, through "Euroregions" and decentralization *From the outside, by giving ever more power to the private sector This way, states will gradually lose control of everything, as what was before under their responsibility will now be controlled by unelected technocrats at the EU level, unelected oligarchs of some large private company, or elected but weak local administration.

For what it's worth Greece has the same inferiority complex, and its political history in the last century is not entirely dissimilar to Portugal's. All you need for a fascist movement to flare up is for the Left's anti-systemic credentials to be put to question. Then you'll have people voting for the most politically taboo thing as a "gently caress you" to the system. This largely depends on how the Left handles itself; the KKE is a joke, and SYRIZA is close enough to actual governance that it has to compromise with the establishment it will have to govern. Maybe that hasn't happened to the Portuguese Left yet, but Portugal isn't an anti-fascist special snowflake.
