Yeah, but it's illegal. Thus you are a criminal and your opinion can be safely dismissed.

Now run along and enjoy your weed of delinquency while I ruin my internal organs with opiates.

Alcohol has fatal withdrawal, but it doesn't matter, anyone who thinks tobacco should be legal and marijuana shouldn't is an idiot. It gives you cancer, increases risk of heart disease, emphysema, is highly addictive and doesn't even get you high. If it got you high at least you'd have a risk reward argument.

Nicotine has anti-depressant qualities so tobacco does have a mind-altering component. (Neither tobacco nor pot should be illegal)

Nicotine has also been found to help with ADHD, some forms of frontal lobe epilepsy, and possibly with symptomatic relief of some effects of schizophrenia.

There are healthier ways to self-administer than smoking though, but yeah, neither tobacco nor pot should be illegal.

Fair points all, but nicotine is not tobacco. This is important because like the frequent pitfall in the medical marijuana argument, no doctor in modern medicine will proscribe you inhale the smoke of burning leaves for the treatment of any illness. Just to clarify, I also am not for the prohibition of either, but if one was on the chopping block tobacco would get the axe.

I was 100% addressing this though:

Humphry posted:

Nope they are legal here. I smoke tobacco, I drink 5-6 coffees and 1-2 energy drinks a day. I cant drink alcohol because of opiate pain meds I take.
It's like if you ordered them by hazard over benefit and put them from largest to smallest.

That's a valid point for ADHD/epilepsy treatment, they are definitely looking at safer administration of pharmaceutical grade nicotine, e.g. via oral spray. For the anti-depressant and symptomatic schizophrenia effects they are iirc still looking at tobacco though, which also contains MAOI compounds such as the harmala alkaloids. I think there is some research into vaporization of a full spectrum tobacco extract containing these without the combustion byproducts, which would be closer to vaping medical marijuana than it is to something like marinol.

Tobacco shouldn't be illegal but it should be discouraged and the way we're doing so seems appropriate (large taxes against the product plus prohibition of usage in public places).

A new poll of likely voters confirms proponents' fears that Amendment 2, a proposal to expand medical marijuana use in the Sunshine State, is in deep trouble at just the wrong time.

Gravis Marketing released a poll Monday showing only 50 percent of likely voters plan to support Amendment 2, while 42 percent say they oppose it. The remaining 8 percent of voters remain undecided.

For Amendment 2 to be added to the Florida Constitution, 60 percent of voters have to support it on the November ballot -- meaning if 42 percent oppose it, as the poll shows, it will be defeated.

No. That's the law Rick Scott passed earlier in the year. It was for epileptic children and also a way to combat the new amendment.

I'm hoping that between the sample sizes of the last few polls being much smaller than earlier ones showing the proposition passing and people not wanting to admit their positions over the phone, the proposition will just squeak by.

But I'm guessing it won't. Maybe in 2016.

Wow, "they don't call Amendment 2 the 'Pot for Teens' amendment...but they should!" had me cracking up. I'm upset that people will take those ads seriously and vote based on them, but that's still super funny to me.

So I'm starting to wonder what the hidden variables in these polls are. These things are all over the place, but according to this one we should rejoice. If you don't want to click it, it's a phone poll of 834 likely voters and shows 62% supporting the ballot measure and 3% unsure. I really wonder if the polls with huge percentages of unsure voters are skewed in favor of the status quo.

Tuesday is going to be a long day.

I figure there is an element that is afraid to say they will vote yes on it. There's no doubt that the onslaught of negative ads affected the numbers. I saw a graphic the other day that showed only 80 individuals and businesses donated money to the No campaign.
