sure but the data set "list of integers 1...n" can't be like that if you can perform he kinda of operations that are involved in the "correct" answer to the question

please note i also consider these puzzles dumb and i think the convo moved on a little

if you've got a terminating stream of integers 1...n in some order, the only thing you need to store is the sum to pick out a missing integer. it's easy to pick n so that you'd have a hard time sorting in memory

the bad part of the test is that knowing that you only need the sum is a trick, not the idea behind it which is p. useful

Trick questions, even easy ones, are dumb because the answer in real life is almost always just a Google away. It's probably more useful to check they won't be googling the basic stuff like how to use linq

thats the thing that i hate about stupid programming exercises

i've got enough experience with a bunch of languages that i know the syntax and most of the idiosyncrasies but gently caress memorizing the stdlib when documentation exists

but somehow these interview exercises have become about memorizing functions rather than actually solving problems

for people who are anal about this i think you have about half a year to a year of being able to write something like rust and being able to palm it off as correct without it being deemed too esoteric

sometimes ill get candidates doing a coding thing and they'll decide 'hey, java' and start writing all the classes and stuff and ill have to say 'don't bother with all that', and then sometimes they'll just do pseudocode and that's ok too
