Seems like a really good design but it has to just eat head gaskets.

I had a bet in my mind that if I google 'audi timing chain' the first result is gonna be it. I was right. Apparently they 'simplified' it, though.

Mister Kingdom posted:What kind of twisted mind comes up with that? Twisted minds? For some reason this made me want to revisit the Pontiac Fiero: Go ahead. I'll wait for you to finish. Did you notice the pop-up headlamps? Yes. In case you missed the many stories of things that were wrong about this car, here are a few to get you started: Although marketed as a sports car, the engine was designed for low-revving efficiency, and was never intended to be redlined. The low-revving economy engine produced a whopping significantly less than 100 horsepower, so owners were probably of a mind to really give it some pedal to see if there was more in there. Breakdowns soon followed. GM just recycled the tires from an economy car. And the brakes. And the suspension. Because why not? Drivers who managed to get the car up to speed were greeted with a strange mix of economy suspension and one of the most rigid bodies of its era- the car was an absolute monster when it came to safety ratings. But we want some really diabolical design. So how about the engine fires? -Slightly defective connecting rods could fail dramatically, causing the car to catch fire. -But all you had to do to avoid the problem was keep your oil topped off, and the rods would never be stressed so as to fail. -Helpfully, the oil stick proudly declared that the car held 3 quarts of oil. In reality, the car held 4.5 quarts. Oh, but you read your manual so you know the right amount of oil, no fires for you! So you put your car on a lift to give it a service and oh I'm sorry you idiot you just ruined your car. Didn't you know there are massive, fragile cooling ducts running the length of the vehicle which can be easily crimped by a lift thus causing overheating? You moron. Hall and Oates. Goddamn.

Spotted in Las Vegas last night. Looked legit from that distance, but I dared not walk over to it because it was in the VIP valet section.

Eh, 4 timing chains isn't particularly rare for a DOHC V engine? What's so bad about it? I mean the timing chain guides fail prematurely but that could happen on any car.

I worked security for years in Vegas. Valets and security don't care as long as you're not bothering the patron/owner or touching the vehicle; a lot of the "VIP Valet" is more of a risk management "always on camera" policy once the driver leaves (as going through the ramps to the valet garage takes you through a couple of small blinds), and less "keep the rabble out."
