Heh, at my old work the water was out one fine Monday morning. They were demolishing the building next door, and apparently our pipe passed through them, and the Nobel-prize-winners doing the demo turned off the heat, which froze a pipe and burst it, which caused them to call a plumber, who shut off the supply and thereby us as well. We went half a day with no drinking water, NO COFFEE!!! and no toilets. One team lead achieved eternal and immortal hero status because he went to the local gas station and got his team coffee. Another co-worker drove to the nearby university to take a dump. The cafeteria, bless their souls, actually managed to prepare lunch for 300 people. My director jokingly declared that all work performed and all meetings held while uncaffeinated should be scrapped.

Man I'm kicking myself right now. Last week I went to the bank to get rent/bill money and got 6 uncirculated sequential serial number 2009 $1 star notes in my change. I didn't realize until I got home and immediately put them on eBay. I've already doubled my profit on them which makes me wish I went back to the bank and got the rest of them.

In the US, they are for any place that involves food (restaurants, kitchens, etc). No way to wash your hands = closed

Checked my 401(k) balances today, and my account I had with my previous employer (I've been gone nearly two years) lost over $1,000 because it wasn't vested and the company took it back (forfeiture). I didn't even realize they could do that. Fuckfaces. My 401(k) is already pretty underfunded, but that's a slap in the face right there.

From experience on ships, a tankless upper decker is when the toilets don't work so people poo poo, layer toilet paper, and so on until it's at the lid. Also they finally opened three shitters. So now we have 3 toilets for the ~500 males here, and it's burrito day.

Wound up calling a different dealer (Reliable Chevrolet for DFW goons). The phone # listed on their website ... actually goes to a real service department. Gruff voice picks up "Service, this is Jimbob". I already know this is gonna go really good or really bad. Probably really good. Mention the recall, he asks for the vin. "Oh yeah, I got 38 o dem motors here. Wanna come in today or tomorrow? Should be maybe hour and a half to swap". I ask about a loaner, he laughs and said "not for no hour and a half. If it were a half a day, we could talk". Told him I didn't expect one for that amount of time and knew that there's plenty of places to eat nearby anyway. I just tried calling Stonebriar again, and actually got a person at the dealer. Explained my frustration at never getting a call back, he said they're having major issues with that call center and in the process of changing providers, apologized, and gave me his direct #(apparently he's the service manager). He did mention they're running about a 3 day backlog on this recall alone (which, I believe, only affects Ions and Vues); I mentioned I'd already scheduled with Reliable, he said "As much as I hate to admit it, you're probably better off doing that - they have a much bigger facility and a lot more employees, and they'll get you in and out a lot faster" (not word for word, but very close). Just talked to Toyota of Richardson for mom about the airbag recall. They need to do a "2-6 hour inspection". No loaners, period, ever, no matter what, they just flat out don't own loaners.... but they have a rental car facility on site, and they're happy to shuttle you up to 10 miles. Then it takes a few weeks to order parts, then they need the car up to 2 days. And again, no loaners. What the gently caress happened to Toyota, I thought they were supposed to have really good customer service? (this is the same Toyota dealer that, despite given the paint code and VIN, still ordered the wrong door handle, and refused to take it back, as it was custom order, even though they ordered the wrong loving color, and it had the wrong VIN and even wrong year on the receipt.. thankfully only plain white instead of pearl white, so it doesn't stand out that badly, but still) randomidiot fucked around with this message at 17:59 on Nov 4, 2014 |

Depending on the age, that building may have one of the biggest water tanks you've ever seen on the roof or top floor for exactly that. It also likely has fire sprinkler pumps that connect to a huge water main, but can also be connected to an external source. Like a fire truck's tank (which it would probably suck dry in about 5 seconds), and fire extinguishers But yeah, better safe than sorry.

Re: Toyota service departments I dated a guy that was a service advisor at all 3 Toyota dealers here locally, at some point in his career. His theory on Toyota reliability: push extra, unnecessary maintenance at regular intervals. Hide it by forcing customers to a combo menu approach. Need an oil change and tire rotate at 30k? That will be $300 because it's bundled with a fuel injection cleaning, coolant and transmission flush that isn't needed yet. If it's summer, they absolutely must top off your A/C system, even if there's no indication it needs it. Need new brake pads? You're getting rotors too, even though yours don't need it.

Goober Peas posted:Re: Toyota service departments This is EXACTLY why I do most of the work on mom's car. I found so much poo poo that was either shoddily done, or not done at all, when the timing belt was done. It's been 60k. She got it back surging and idling around 2000 rpm. It's pissing from all 4 cam seals and the front crank seals. It's had the valve cover gaskets done 4 times since then. We paid for new spark plugs, but when we gave up with the dealer and went to an indie for the valve cover gaskets, I asked him to pull a plug from each bank. Original plugs. Got it back from the dealer with a squealing belt, and they said it was "normal" (they'd also reused the original belt; it had oil all over it and was cracked). It went through 2 shops (1 dealer, 1 indie) to track down evap codes; it took about $5 of vacuum lines and about 30 minutes of getting a sunburn for me to fix 3 evap codes. I doubt the water pump got done with the timing belt.. if they even did the belt - but I can't see it without pulling the timing cover. The coolant looks downright ugly, so I'm betting they reused the original coolant. It only goes to the shop for stuff I don't like doing - such as yanking the intake manifold to get to the rear valve cover. Brakes, fluids, a/c charges, etc all get done here. The look on her face when I handed her the receipt for 5 qts of Mobil 1 High Mileage + a filter..... she'd been paying $80-100 for years for that oil change, it was under $30 in materials and about 15 minutes to do. I need to do a drain/fill on the transmission soon. It's been a few years since it's been touched, and while the fluid still looks new(ish), I know it has over 50k on it. The radiator hoses are also starting to crack, so I'll knock those out + heater hoses on my next day off. keykey posted:Wait. What the hell?!? People bought $6.00 for $12.00?!? Star notes are worth a bit more than regular bills, especially uncirculated. I'm not entirely sure why. I have a pile of 40s-mid 60s quarters here that are worth far, far more than 25 cents, thanks to the silver content in them. randomidiot fucked around with this message at 19:06 on Nov 4, 2014 |
