The website stats.grok.se shows you the view counts per month for any given article on Wikipedia. The view count for the Ebola article is just over 600,000 views for October. I thought it would be more than that, given how much Ebola is talked about in the news. Are this site's statistics reliable?

My wife seems to get sick (colds and sinus infections) pretty frequently; maybe once a month. What are the chances that a doctor would do anything other than say "Well, sucks for you"?
|
# ? Nov 2, 2014 18:08 |

Sometimes if you've got chronic sinus infections you can get surgery to clear your sinuses. They also have nasal sprays for that stuff but those never helped me all that much.
|
# ? Nov 2, 2014 19:06 |

You can also get tubes in your ears. You have to keep going back to the doctor until it becomes easier for them to do something for you and get you off their back than to do nothing and hope you don't come back. Also, keep in mind that they call it "practicing medicine" because they don't necessarily know what's wrong with you. If it was as easy as "google it, 'I'm feeling lucky', then do that thing", they'd do it every time. They don't know what's wrong, and they don't know what to do. The fix may entail trying 10 or 100 different solutions, any one (or many) of which could be invasive surgery, drugs with side effects worse than the problem, etc. You (your wife) needs to be a cog in the solution, not just a squeaky wheel.

I had both of these procedures done in February after suffering with chronic sinusitis, ear infections, and post-nasal drip for most of my life. My surgeon changed my life in a way I can't even describe in words. I feel like a completely different person. The solution is to tell your doctor to refer you to an ENT specialist. A GP can't do anything for that condition.

Go to a supermarket right now and buy a discounted sack of American candy. One of the ones that's a real mix. There will certainly be products in it they've never had.

Are you specifically going for food? From personal experience, here is a list of American foods that aren't easily found in Australia, but most Australians will know from tv/movies: - Twinkies - Pop Tarts - cinnamon flavored candy/gum/mints - ranch dressing - Lucky Charms (or any cereal with marshmallows) - buffalo wings sauce - Reese's peanut butter cups (though thankfully becoming more common) - cheese in a can Alternatively, they don't have hamsters in Australia, so a toy hamster might be amusing. Or a paper dollar, since Australia hasn't had paper $1 since 1984. Pogo the Clown fucked around with this message at 09:59 on Nov 3, 2014 |

Can anyone recommend really good winter gloves for women with small hands? Typical gloves are way too long in the finger, kids gloves annoyingly too short, and the soft stretchy gloves are useless in wind and wet.

Basically every dive bar hosts some kind of post-christmas dinner event where all the locals come in - when I was a 'tender, Christmas and Thanksgiving were among our busiest days of the year. When I lived alone in a city far from my family (trying to get my career going), I couldn't always make it home for the holidays. Best thing I did was opened Christmas presents as they arrived (to avoid a lonely Christmas day opening presents alone and crying into my coffee), then just treated Christmas like any other weekend day. Slept in, made breakfast, watched the parade, surfed the internet, puttered around the house, etc.

The bartenders at my local dive bar I used visit back when I was in my 20's used to organize a potluck Thanksgiving dinner for their regulars. It was a surprisingly egalitarian dinner. Bartenders, doctors, strippers, cooks, nurses, college students, Wal-mart stockers and network admins all sitting side by side enjoying a decent Thanksgiving together. Basically, all the people who couldn't afford to leave for the holidays, and those with jobs that didn't allow them to leave for the holidays got together and had a pretty good Thanksgiving. You could try something similar, try to organize a potluck dinner for single people who are stuck working during the Holidays. thrakkorzog fucked around with this message at 10:32 on Nov 4, 2014 |

Okay, so what would happen if someone who wasn't eligible for President of the United States won a presidential election with a write-in vote? Like if it was Ozzy Osbourne, who was born in the UK or Optimus Prime who is a fictional character AND born outside of the United States, were the winners of the election. Would the 2nd-place person be given the position or would they hold another election? Would the votes for ineligible people just be voided?

Would the 2nd-place person be given the position or would they hold another election? Would the votes for ineligible people just be voided? The electors for each state cast the actual vote, so the state governments would probably order the electors of whichever real candidate came in highest in the state to go to Washington to cast the formal votes in the electoral college. So you could easily have it recorded as Ozzy Osbourne winning the popular vote, but the electoral vote majority is most likely going to go to a real party with a real eligible candidate. And if it turns out the highest vote getter out of eligible candidate in the various states wasn't enough for anyone to get over half the electoral votes (because say a third of the electoral votes were won by the democrats, a third by the republicans, and a third by various other parties that normally don't win anything), the choice of who is the next president and vice president is determined by congress. When this happens, the House of Representatives gets to vote a contingent election for President using the three highest scoring eligibile candidates from the general election as their choices, and the Senate does the same for Vice President using the three highest scoring eligible vice presidential candidates. In the event that the House hasn't garnered a majority vote for a president by inauguration day but the senate's chosen a vice president, that vice president is acting President until a president is chosen by the house. If neither body has agreed by inauguration day, then the current Speaker of the House is acting president until one is decided. During this process the "old" Senate and House repeatedly vote up until the newly elected Senate and House from the recent election are put in place, upon which that set will continue the votes to determine a president and vice president - again, only being allowed to choose from the three candidates for each office from the previous election. So in summary: there is no chance of a second election being held. And even in the worst case scenario procedure is in place to cover for inability to elect. And everyone who thought it would be totally rad to vote for Optimus Prime is probably upset because they probably won't like the actual winner.

I have a kinda firm lump in my elbow between the rough elbow skin and the bones after a bike wreck. Been 10 weeks now and its painful (sometimes involuntary cussword-so) to bump into stuff or rest on an arm rest, what is it? When will it go away? About the size of a somewhat crushed-flat almond. If I move it to the side and feel around there's no pain in the bones just this lump itself. Weird thing is, it didn't really develop until a week, week and a half after. I messed up my shoulder a good bit and thought I just scraped up my elbow. Didnt notice anything else down there. Once my shoulder started getting good and the elbow scrape started healing this showed up. E: lump is 3/4" away from the scrape so maybe not totally related unless the skin rotated. (Johnnie Cochran rhyme for y'all) E again : more googling leads me to hematoma but it seems that's after a bad bruise? I had no bruise look or discoloration at all wreck-day to now, just a decently deep scrape. Vin BioEthanol fucked around with this message at 02:23 on Nov 5, 2014 |
