It's understandable that balance can be tricky when the gulf between the hopeless and competent is so wide, but Cryptic make absolutely no attempt to understand how the game plays for any group of players. Sliding up and down the hitpoints is a woeful method of setting difficulty.

To a certain degree anyway. There's some value in having ships live long enough to actually maneuver out of AoEs or use their special gimmicks, but they didn't need that large a buff to accomplish it. And shuffling HP around is still dancing around the bigger and stupider change that gave every advanced queues fail conditions. If queues only just took longer, it would be annoying but people wouldn't have fled them in droves like this, but when Cryptic did both at once and reduced rewards too I'm not sure why they expected a different result.

Just as a heads-up, there's currently a bug in Cryptic's new fraud prevention system that can cause your entire Steam account to be banned if you buy zen through Steam. So don't do it till they fix it!

I've been farming some missions recently for kit modules and I wanted to see about upping the survivability of the main ground BOffs I have. Right now all 4 have a random assortment of XI/XII blue/purple Polyweave armor and shields. I have sufficient fleet credits and Dil to buy all of them Elite Fleet armor and shields. For armor I'm thinking Polyalloy ResAll/RegSH/Nanite and the RegSH Shields.

Volume two of the Dentist's Field Guide to the ERPist has been published.

You'll find it on the wiki under goon guides.

Edit: I've also published a guide intended for newer goons joining us in STO, also on the wiki as the now first guide. It covers a bit of the general mythos and perception of us from the perspective of pubbies.

In the grim future, there is only commerce.
So what's the deal with the Dyson ships?

I kinda dig their gimmick and they actually look good with the non-default skins.

But they're technically science ships which I am lead to believe are hot garbage.

Asimo
Sep 23, 2007

They're actually pretty good science vessels. Just they're also mediocre escorts, and while the gimmick is supposed to be to swap between the modes, there's no real reason to, the cooldown makes it impractical, and you're probably going to do more damage in sciboat mode with sensor analysis than with the crappy proton dhc.

Great reads. You must've run UESF a dozen times to gain the intestinal fortitude necessary to deal with those ERP'ists. So are you going to have to actually ERP with them or is it sort of like being undercover with the mafia, it's okay to beat someone up and snort coke, but no killing?

Also, is it possible to use the saved loadouts to migrate gear from one ship to another so you don't have to get multiples of universal consoles, etc. if I want to run both a sciboat and a battlecruiser?

Yep, when you switch ships it automatically transfers your gear from one to another.

Asimo
Sep 23, 2007

That's pretty much explicitly what loadouts are for, yeah. In theory when you get into a ship, all the gear/doffs for the active loadout on that ship are automatically pulled from other ships/your inventory/your bank and equipped.

In theory.

Also in case anyone reads the thread like I do at work before I get home. The academy event is going to give you a rare doff free, but the one you need to scan takes 75 for a random ultra rare doff. Just buy a fleet doff pack off the exchange for 50k geez.

Asimo
Sep 23, 2007

It continues to amaze me how staggeringly pointless and tedious the academy event is even after it was "improved". It's maybe not not the prime example of Cryptic being unable to understand effort v. reward, but it's certainly way up there.

As a special bonus there's apparently a 20h cooldown on the doff turnin, and if you had more than 75 particles it uses them all anyway. :toot:

Never in my life would I reduce myself to ERP. Also I'm the one who had the misfortune of first discovering the UESF.

However wait for volume 4 later today, I purposefully blew my cover. You'll see why.

It's not even effort vs. reward. Effort is fine, so long as I'm having fun playing this VIDEO GAME while I'm expending effort. Clicking on poo poo 200 times is not fun and it's not a game, it's just trading an hour and a half of my life for a rare doff. If I wanted to mindlessly click on poo poo, I'd play sim stapler on a mac classic emulator.

Science ships aren't as terrible as they used to be but they still require a pretty hefty investment in fleet credits, dilithium and Zen to be worthwhile.

With all the new stuff out there and ways to push particle generators higher than ever before, can you spam enough gravity wells to do meaningful dps? Or whatever power, I'm assuming GW's probably the most damaging science thing now but maybe not.

Sure, GW does lots of damage. Teamed up with Tyken Rift you can do some serious AOE. Not to mention dropping a ship to near 0 speed negates some of it's defense so that's even more dps.

I personally, have really grown to like the SciDestroyers (don't have the ugly fed one though). They are very versatile, I usually use sci mode for aoe damage and tac mode for more single targets. Coupled with the cloak and everything else it's a solid and useful ship.

TBRs do a lot more damage with lots of partgens and the science R&D trait, I can usually squeeze about 14k dps out of my fleet Nebula. It's still not anywhere near a decent tac captain but it's not terrible either.

e: Numbers from the last ISA I bothered to parse, again it's not great but given how important crowd control is when pugging I think it's acceptable. Note that this is with the pull TBR doff, I basically end up dragging things around my grav well with TBRs until they die.

fakedit: the Target Weapons is because if you target weapons on Gateways you have a 100% chance to shut down their weapons for whatever reason, which is nice when all your heals and such are on cooldown.

315 which is a lot of fleet credits and dilithium but honestly I got pretty bored with the cruisers and never really liked escorts so it's a fun alternative without being actively bad.

I'm gonna pick up a sciship for my klank. I can get a fleet Varanus for one fleet module thanks to the Varanus giveaway and will probably get that. I assume, though, that the real best sci ship you can get would actually be the 4-tac-console version of the Dyson Science Destroyer, left in Sci mode 100% of the time? How much better, though.
