Re: Betsy Hodges, just for reference, here is a youtube video published by Neighborhoods for Change, the organization Hodges was working with. They work with convicted felons and disenfranchised minority communities trying to engage in civic and community involvement involvement. The guy talking to the camera is the man she took a picture with.

It's pretty disgusting as attack jobs go.

Edit -- also, for reference, people I know who live in the greater Minneapolis area trace the apparent feud between the city cops and Mayor Hodges to Hodges' attempts to make good on a campaign promise to outfit Minneapolis officers with body cameras.

What a horrible thread to have a post.
They are doubling down on this btw. New story on the website:

http://kstp.com/news/stories/S3613450.shtml?cat=1

quote:

Quinn says the gesture is a "known gang sign of one of the most violent gangs in Minneapolis and they will use this to their advantage."

Quinn says there is a reason the man posted the photo on his website
and he says, "There could be another gang that would take it as a show of disrespect and commit another crime to solve the dispute."

Hmmm yes I see, some guy posted this photo on his website, and if anyone saw it that could really cause a problem/give "an advantage" to a violent street gang. So the correct course of action is to broadcast it all over the nightly news.

Police, last night: "The mayor should be ashamed she's making gang signs!"
Police, today: "She probably didn't even know what she was doing, but we had to show this on the news because it makes our job harder in some vague way that we refuse to elaborate on!"

It's also important to bear in mind that "gang specialists" and the like are extremely liberal in what they do and do not consider "gang activity." For example, the "gang sign" here seems to be one person pointing at another person.

This from the same criminal justice system that calls fans of the Insane Clown Posse gang members with a straight face.

New Orleans (CNN) - The report is full of harrowing details alleging that five New Orleans Police Department detectives in the special victims unit may have failed to investigate sex crimes over a three-year period.

But one case stands out.

According to the seven-page document released Wednesday by the city's Office of Inspector General, a 2-year-old was brought to a hospital emergency room after an alleged sexual assault. Tests would show the toddler had a sexually transmitted disease, the report said.

The detective in the case wrote in his report that the 2-year-old "did not disclose any information that would warrant a criminal investigation and closed the case," the inspector general's report said.

"Detective D told at least three different individuals that Detective D did not believe that simple rape should be a crime," it said.

I like my idea better because it lets me think up a very ridiculous movie premise and I can ignore the fact that a detective said rape should not be a crime if it was only a "simple" rape. A detective that handled 11 simple rape cases.

Well, he was assigned 11 simple rape cases. If he handled them it wouldn't be a horrific story of injustice.

But don't worry, the police are executing these duties with all the sensitivity and fair-mindedness we could hope for. Just ask Mercer County forfeiture unit chief Sean McMurtry:

Hardest case of “no snitching” for me is spotting a probably-drunk driver. I’ve reported once after observing them drift all over every lane for five minutes. But if it’s any less obvious than that, I just drive on rather than cause an extraneous police interaction.

My random FTP moment of the day. I have a parking pass assigned by my boss, since I work for housing at my university. It's up in my window right where the normal parking passes go, but the cops on campus gave me a ticket anyways.

I went to talk to them but the cop swears that the pass wasn't in my window. My boss can't convince them otherwise, so if I don't pay the ticket my car may be booted the next time they find it on campus.

I also can't graduate until I pay the ticket.

Not really; there's an important detail that article obfuscated the poo poo out of. The "alternative school" the kid goes to is one for special-needs kids (which, as we all know, are just bastions of gang activity). It's questionable how much he even understands what happened.

Although the police thinking "open hands raised in the air" is a gang sign would explain why they shoot so many unarmed black kids.

I don't think so. Alternative school usually means that the kid's behavior got them kicked out of their home school. I'm sure he has a behavioral IEP and probably an academic one, but there's no reason to assume he's retarded.

Whoa there that's pretty offensive. First off, students who go to special needs schools aren't unaware of their environment. People with disabilities constantly struggle with the stereotype that they are incapable children, and no one needs to add to that by assuming that "special needs student" = "vegetable". Secondly, the alternative school Herbert Pulgar is attending is clearly set up for so-called "at-risk" students - ones with involvement with the Child Welfare and/or Protective Services programs, often with histories of domestic trauma, behavioral issues, academic difficulty, and so on. Beyond all that, Pulgar clearly understands what has happened to him, both in the article (where he insists that the art is "clean" i.e. not gang-related) as well as in interviews with local media: http://www.bing.com/videos/watch/video/herbert-pulgar-talks-about-his-design/1d2aldzwv

I have no idea where I got that from, at this point; I remember hearing that he was special needs (which I can find), and remember someone elaborating at the time that he was mentally handicapped in some serious fashion (which I cannot find any sort of corroboration of). The only seriously-biased media sources I can find don't even claim that, just the usual "of course it's a gang sign, he's in Chicago with the blacks and the mexicans :bahgawd:".

The best/worst part of this is that apparently one of the 'gang signs' in his work was the inclusion of a heart shape. We are literally at the point now where art depicting a heart is suspect because some gang (which the kid has no shown knowledge of affiliation with) has also used that shape. I look forward to schools being shuttered in February because of a profusion of gang symbols being distributed among the student body. http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2014/11/sex_crimes_nopd_audit.html#incart_river

And here's the Times Picayune article on it, where they name the officers and mention where they've been reassigned (but not fired, of course)
http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2014/11/nopd_rape_problems.html

quote:

"It is our sworn duty to protect and serve, and we take that duty very seriously," Harrison said. "It appears these five detectives may have neglected that duty and, as a police department, we won't tolerate it."

Harrison said the five detectives -- Akron Davis, Merrell Merricks, Derrick Williams, Damita Williams and Vernon Haynes -- and supervisors Lt. Louis Gaydosh and Sgt. James Kelly have been assigned to street patrol duties.

The detectives wrote no investigative reports for 86 percent of the 1,290 sexual-assault or child-abuse calls they were collectively assigned to investigate from 2011 through 2013, according to the report released Wednesday.

At least two of the officers started making up reports when they realize they were being investigated.
