Maybe. I've seen them twice, 2001 or 2002 and then again in 2005. I can't remember very well. Not even sure if I have the city right. Either Austin or Dallas.

None of it was tracks from their albums, at least they were hardly recognizable. The opener was a noise act. There was some fat S&M dude who looked like Penn Gillette standing in the front, with a little tiny dominatrix girl pulling on his pony tail the whole time, why I remember that, I have no idea. The bass was completely over-the-top louder than everything else, loud to the point that it made your guts ache...

???

Wait... Here it is. Yep I recognize the extended version of Output and that track from Peel Sessions 2.

Sounds alright now, to be honest. Can't believe I drove 8 hours there and back to see it. Back then me and my friend just thought these guys take themselves way to seriously.

Yeah I saw them twice too, once in chicago in 2001. They went up on stage between songs with no fanfare or announcment, no lights either, and played a very mediocre boring set for about 30 minutes. It was very disappointing. Maybe they were uncomfortable playing live at that point.

You know, I'd be less worried about my 16 year old daughter dating a successful 40 year old cartoonist than dating a 16 year old loser.

I mean, Jesus, kid, at least date a motherfucker with abortion money and house to have sex at where your mother and I don't have to hear it. Also, if he treats her poorly, boom, that asshole's gonna catch a statch charge.

Please, John K. Date my daughter... Save her from dating smelly dropouts who wanna-be Soundcloud rappers.

Well. I'll say this. They actually play live, which was kind of uncommon for electronic musicians.

I mean, if you heard a keyboard, Sean or Rob had their finger on the key. I remember reading an interview where they said they used Sonic Foundry Acid to sequence, trigger, change and add effects to beats off their computer live, while the other screwed around with keyboards and whatever other hardware they used.

So, even if it looked like watching paint dry, and sounded a bit awkward, it was a performance as opposed to a DJ set.

Edit: I used to play some gigs as a one man electronic act. Sometimes I'd bring along a friend with a guitar or something, just to add something new to the music. If booked at rave everything was alright. But getting booked at a music venue was a nightmare. I started off sitting in a lawn chair and drinking, while the music played from my computer through the club sound system. This pissed people off, even though I was doing exactly what many other electronic musicians do live. So I switched over to whole "stare intently at a monitor and move your mouse around so people think you're actually doing something," thing and people liked it more. Really though, some types of music are just not conducive to being booked as live shows. At least Autechre were trying to do something spontaneous and organic for a live set.

wow, I was a that Austin show as well in 2001. The only thing I seemed to remember was it just sounded like they turned on the random effects sampler of their system. That and them charging $40 for their shirt, which for 2001 was insane.

Not surprised since he's been more prolific than I thought he would have been in recent years (That one single he did with Autechre a couple of years ago is a good example).

I'll be pretty excited if Aphex really is putting out a new album, I've been wanting to hear something new from him. I think I got the general impression that a lot of people don't like his Druqks album, but it contains some of my favorites by him (Cock/Ver10, Mount Saint Michael).

Would anyone happen to have any good suggestions for artists producing songs similar to those? I've also been trying to get into DnB and acid since those seem to be fairly similar genres to Richard's more intense songs.

his styles are varied and sometimes very mellow, but check out the flashbulb. kirlian selections and flexing habitual might be good places to start for stuff like that. his recent output has been more soundtracky. most everything is on his bandcamp

oh, i did read someone say that the new aphex gets intense as the album progresses

in case you haven't, squarepusher's go plastic can be intense, and Venus no. 17 EP should not be missed.

Don't really know where to talk about this, but it's on Warp so gently caress it: There's a new Flying Lotus album out next month, and it sounds loving insane: http://warp.net/records/flying-lotus

This is the furthest into jazz that he's gone it seems, moreso than even Cosmogramma. I was hoping he'd bring out something a bit more electronic and beat heavy – something to capture how great his live shows are, which he's never really done on record, but this still sounds awesome.

I am really curious, now that we are a year+ with the last Boards of Canada: how are people sitting with it? Is it something you keep coming back to? Has it aged in the past year, or lost interest? It seems for myself that each of their releases has a certain feel and nostalgic element to them, and the hooks that keep me interested are vastly different, but Tomorrow's Harvest I am still trying to figure out where I stand with it, and how much it is still pulling me in and learning new things from. Just curious what the sentiment is for folks after digesting it over a year now.

Really glad Team Doyobi and Quinoline Yellow made it in the list. It does bother me that an act as influential as Gridlock was left out, though.

this just came across my feed, though not sure if it has been posted, as it was from 2012. Pretty interesting recreate of an unreleased/untitled BoC track by Machinedrum
https://soundcloud.com/machinedrum/boc-untitled-machinedrum-edit

from the write up:
I've always been a massive fan of Boards of Canada, if its not obvious already! 10-11 years ago I stumbled upon a bootleg recording of one of their extremely rare live performances at the Warp 10 Birthday party in 1999. The closing tune at this show has always remained a mystery to me. As far as I know it has no title and has never been released. It's quite possibly one of my favorite things they have done and really is a shame it never came out. You can hear the original bootleg recording (quite bad quality) here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYEZueAelKc

Fast forward to Summer 2012... Since I am a huge nerd I decided to take this bootleg recording and re-produce it for fun. Using the recording I laid new drums over the existing drum patterns (almost 100% accurate to original), replayed some synth parts and the bassline. The only thing I didn't try to re-create was the original vocoder parts and some random samples so I used the bootleg recording for that. I was tempted to make a shorter 4-5 minute version but I figured I should preserve the piece in its intended length (although the length was most likely due to it being a live jam).
