I forget, did we ever find out whether what Yosuke's crush is saying in the shadow world is her or her shadow talking?

I don't think there was any concrete proof, but I'm going with the Shadow World loving with Yosuke. Saki probably did dislike Yosuke a bit, but the Shadow World just loves to blow things out of proportion.

Love triangle is not really the right word, but dang it's hella soap opera. Oh yeah, for some reason I just thought you were her shopping servant for most of her SL and helped her w/her physical image problems later on.

Thanks to the advice of this thread and the Before I Play thread I beat Matador (Nocturne incantation, obviously) on only my second try at about level 20. What a jerk. Went in fully prepared with me and two demon buddies immune to Force and he still Andalusia'd me to death the first time. I can only imagine what people who picked the game up in 2003 and didn't know what the Candelabrum was for went through. I'm playing on Normal, going physical build for the Demi-fiend. Is there a specific ending I should shoot for first? I know very little about Nocturne's endings, what does the alignment lock look like?

There are a few spoiler-free guides on how to get it, because it requires a whole bunch of crap.

Like they say the True Demon Ending is the most :metal: ending and it has more content (boss fights and dungeons) than any other ending. There is very little content exclusive to the other endings, I think there is only one boss exclusive to one of the other factions' routes. The alignment is based mostly on questions and each of the faction leaders will directly ask you to join at some point during the game. You are locked into True Demon Ending no matter what when you reach the very end of the Labyrinth of Amala dungeon, before going to the final dungeon.

God, are the early bosses in SMTIV an RNG shitshow or what? Hp numbers are so low and damage is so high I'm basically praying the boss doesn't hit a critical ever (or just doesn't use all of its turns targeting a single demon) or something of mine is probably dying. And when the something dies, the fight is over because it loses the buffs I've been stacking and it takes two whole turns from resurrect, then summon them. This was true of Mr. Bull rear end in a top hat and is equally true of Medusa. I guess I could ask, is stacking sukukaja worth it? It doesn't seem to do much, but I could also just be super unlucky, who the gently caress knows.

Buffs/debuffs are a big thing but neither is entirely RNG. In the case of Medusa it is possible to summon a demon who is literally immune to all of her attacks.

A really big thing with bosses is exploiting weaknesses and resistances. So there are quite a few times where you can be hugely outmatched but still win because the boss can't touch you.

Offense is the best defense in SMT4, go for broke. I wouldn't worry much about Sukukaja outside of being a side benefit to Luster Candy.

Oh, so the real answer is to craft your team to suit each boss fight? I'm not sure I'm too hot on that either, that entails work. I guess I should stop playing this like Persona, though.

(Persona works the same way.) Basically treat it like swapping Persona, not like swapping team members.

It's not hard to make demons that cover every weakness. It gives a lot more leeway than Persona as far as crafting your party to suit your needs goes. Though there are enough demons with bosses far enough spread out that you probably won't be fighting any two with the same demons very often until the end game.

Im kinda iffy on the system but thats mostly because I have an annoying knack for fusing away a demon that can resist the nexts bosses attacks right before the next boss.

Amppelix posted:Oh, so the real answer is to craft your team to suit each boss fight? I'm not sure I'm too hot on that either, that entails work. I guess I should stop playing this like Persona, though. The real answer is that weaknesses and resistances and buffs and debuffs are just as important in SMTIV as in any other SMT game (or Persona, for that matter), but SMTIV has an actual explicit weakness in design in that Minotaur and Medusa appear at a level where both you and your accessible demons are distinctly lacking in options, which is why they tend to kick everyone's asses with such reliability. Like, you literally cannot have any debuffing skills for either of these bosses, for example. As people have mentioned there's a specific demon that can cheese Medusa by being immune to everything she can do, and you're past Minotaur, and the game really does open up in terms of tactical abilities after this point. You just have to get past it. Game isn't perfect, this is just one of the more obvious things that it doesn't do as good as it could.

I like Walter too, but he's a liability in the Minotaur fight. I'm pretty sure he can give Minotaur smirk by casting Agi on him, and if that happens, you're hosed.

You control yourself and your three (or less) demons, all other humans that might join you are controlled by the AI. Human guests are temporary, they don't stick around with you forever.

I think he largely just teases him for having a Shadow who is a ludicrously gay stereotype, like pretty much any ordinary teenager would. Yosuke is probably the most realistically written character because he's a bit of a self-obsessed idiot afraid of catching the gay, like how real teenagers in real life are VVVV-- Well the whole team are fairly 2-dimensional, but not nearly to that extent. There's plenty to his character--he's got a good memory, he's kind of lazy but he's responsible and has decent business sense. He cares about his appearance but can't watch his mouth and he's a bit dim-witted, but arguably smarter than a good half the rest of the cast. Yosuke is not a realistically written character. Saying "He acts like an idiot constantly and that's all he does all of the time, forever" basically just shows he's a caricature more than anything else, which is pretty much the entire team.

No MegaTen character is realistically written, the Persona ones just happen to be more anime than the main series.

The Persona 4/Scooby Doo comparisons would be a lot more fun if it had taken a page from Mystery Inc, but then I realized Mystery Inc was basically the Persona 2 Innocent Sin of the Scooby Doo franchise.
