Fall here is pretty nice. Foliage, brisk autumn days. Also icky rainy days and then piles of snow that stick around and turn ugly after the second week. But that's more winter-like.

Someone on Salon posted a truly terrible article. Quelle surprise! It's worth a read, though, as a good crystalization of everything that progressives do wrong in US politics (particularly the sacred rite of the Circular Firing Squad), and why Salon is just the worst. It's entitled "The day Jon Stewart quit: Why “The Daily Show” isn’t the satire America needs." Here's the gist:

quote:

More than fifteen years after its debut on a network whose name should have given us a clue to the show’s true allegiance, “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” (which premiered in 1999 after giving Craig Kilborn the old heave-ho as the original “Daily Show” host) has gone from an invaluable bullshit detector on a government waging unjust wars on a mad hunt for nonexistent weapons of mass destruction, to, at best, an armchair activist’s watercooler conversation starter (“Hey, did you hear what Jon Stewart said last night?” “Yeah, I feel like I know everything there is to know about the Middle East now. Want to hit up the falafel cart for lunch?”) and at worst, a “news” program that’s as guilty of cheerleading some of President Obama’s worst offenses as Fox “News” was of rooting for Dubya’s never-ending wars.

This is something that was posted.

if you're trying to claim there's anything worth defending about the daily show then I'm gonna have to call bullshit. the show jumped the shark when they had on loving pervez musharif as a guest to give him a 30 minute long PR blowjob

e for more content: last week tonight is what the daily show wishes it could be in its dream fantasy. it's a billion times better every single week than the best of TDS ever was, and it's been clear for a long time that jon stewart is a hack who has little to no interest into actually digging into issues of importance if he fears even the slightest bit of pushback, he's an avatar of lovely big-L Liberal milquetoast handwringing bullshit. him getting crossfire taken off the air was by far the best thing the show accomplished and I will give him credit for that (even though the ratings were tanking long before he went on)

Jon always had the convenient excuse that he was always only into this politics stuff because it was a fertile field for comedy. So if he's terrible at actually addressing issues of importance, well, oops, that's your fault for thinking he cared. I get quite hosed off at Jon Oliver for peddling the same "I'm only a comedian" bullshit as Stewart did. It's not surprising, since he's Stewart's protege, but Oliver very clearly cares about the stuff he has on his show. I mean, when he's doing the death penalty or payday loans he's not even really doing any jokes about it (other than self-deprecating "this is so serious I'm sorry" jokes), or the jokes are sort of ancillary to pushing an actual political point.

The original was $5 and the remake was $10 if you bought the original, I don't know what to tell you. It's one thing to say the humor is too base or you aren't good at reflex games but complaining that it somehow wasn't cost effective entertainment is sort of out of left field.

The two Jons are comedians, though. They aren't Amy Goodman, and Comedy Central and HBO aren't The Nation and Mother Jones. Treating TDS and LWT as primary political news sources is like treating SomethingAwfulDotCom as a primary political news source.

However, people do do those things--myself included, because journalism in this country (particularly in this country but around the world as well) is in such a sorry state. Access, ratings, and subs are valued above all else, and retaliation and harassment are the norm for reporting the Wrong Things.
Comedians seem to be the only ones that can get away with speaking truth to power, because our mainstream journalists are unwilling and unable.

But that doesn't make them into journalists. Their job is comedy. The other stuff is a role we the audience force upon them to fill a void.
