Mac really never takes the lead, he's always the partner of whoever he's working with in the group for the episode. He really never takes the lead as much as the other characters do, except when he's with Dee because they spend their group episodes arguing more than anything.

Mac chews up scenery like nobody else. If he's in the background, or someone else is talking, just watch his face. He's incredible. Plus, Mac's outburst with the therapist was incredible. "I was as big as a skyscraper, and now I'm as tiny as a postage stamp!" "So if we talk about it, then you think that I'll get MOST bigger from talking? Lady, you're good."

Mac is basically a big kid with zero self awareness. Him being relegated to mostly secondary roles may have something to do with Rob McElhenney being the main guy running and controlling the show, and a combination of recognizing that he's not quite as good an actor as the others and some humility making him hesitant to spotlight himself very much on his own show. I have nothing to support this idea, I can just easily imagine making the same choice if I were in his place.

Really? I feel like Mac is constantly either taking the lead or attempting to take the lead.

Yeah like if you had to pick one of the characters to be, I don't think anyone would pick Mac. Dennis gets women (albeit in a rapey way), Frank is rich, Charlie gets to go naked sewer diving and generally live in filth (and is the only member of the gang with any actual talent at anything) and Dee, uh... okay, whatever, nobody would pick Dee either. Mac has all the delusion of the others but none of the successes, he kinda sucks at everything.

Having said that, that doesn't at all make him a bad character, and he's pretty essential to the group - before Frank, Mac was probably the only thing holding the gang together. No way would Dennis and Dee hang out with Charlie if he wasn't friends with Mac. Plus if Rob is writing most of the stuff it's only fair to give himself more of a support role, I think.

That's true, it might just be because he's paired up with Dennis the most, and that's when he's most like a follower.

What I love about this show is that it can throw me for a loop. I thought the whole episode I knew what was happening (i.e. Dee would ultimately fail and dry heave a bunch) and then that happened. Dee got got.

It was. He actually recorded it live on the air when he was interviewing Glen, Charlie, and Rob on his real show.

Anyway, I'd like to list some of my favorite Mac moments:

Rum Ham
His reaction to "the implications" :stare:
His letter to Chase Utley
His Halloween memory of Dee being a literal ostrich
Refusing to leave the pawn shop without the wedding dress
Project badass
His entire "stupid science bitches" monologue
Pretty much any time he explodes with anger

I need to re-watch season 9 as I've only seen it once, because I'm sure there were more moments there.

The final shot of "The Gang Finds a Dumpster Baby" might be the single best shot of the series, a fantastic episode all around in general, very strong gruesome twosome (best twosome) performance as well. Best season opener?

What episode was it where Mac is chilling with Frank, and Mac is talking about faking like he has cancer. Frank looks like he is actually pissed off about Mac wanting to go thru with that. The next scene cuts to Mac sitting in a chair with sores on his face and a bald cap on.
