actually, if you were to sell a smart TV you would put together focus groups first and show them the product before you dumped a ton of money into it. Once you determined that consumers want said product you scale your marketing budget accordingly from what you found out in those focus tests.

cable tv has pandered to the lowest common denominator long before the internet. it may be worse now but only because the collective standards of the remaining stragglers have dropped. there were lovely tv shows on all the time in the 80s and 90s, but the really bad ones were forgotten or we learned to like them because nothing else was available.

it seems like there's a trend towards specialty networks producing good quality tv. hbo and showtime have been around for a while, but they're bigger than ever now. we also have amc, fx, and i'm sure there are others i'm forgetting.

there's still a demand for it and it shows. amc's revenue rose 31% last quarter.

we post in a nerd forum so our views on piracy are skewed. it's easy to assume most people are pirates when most people here likely are. when in reality it's much easier for your average game of thrones watcher to stream it legally vs. deal with sketchy public torrent sites and emails from their ISP.

Why would companies cater to idiots that don't want to pay more than X for a "new" TV that is nearly identical to the previous year's TV?

Companies make new TVs every year because if the Board of Trustees doesn't get that sweet sweet dividend on the rising stock price then head's start to roll.

because they should count themselves fuckin lucky to be born into a world where they are allowed to make poo poo for us to watch, and not into a Jewish household in 1930s Germany

they should count themselves lucky that we choose to watch their poo poo. getting paid to do what they do is a cherry on top they should be grateful for but instead they treat it as is their god drat birth right to get paid to produce the fuckin trash that they do

they're fuckin garbage men picking up old dog food cans and sticking them to a Burger King wrapper and calling it "media" and then having the arrogance to expect people to pay them for it

but the corporations! how will they pay for it all! shrieks pagancow, causing nearby windows and wine glasses to shatter

gently caress them, i don't care if they don't make things i like. i'm not complaining about a dearth of things i like, i'm complaining about the ads. enough people make things i do like, for free, to entertain me in perpetuity. and if they didn't, well gently caress, maybe i'd just have to not be constantly entertained for five minutes of my life, which i guess in america is considered inhumane treatment
