if you are not a neilsen family it makes no difference what you watch and if you watch the ads or not

of course cable/dish companies, netflix, amazon and tivo sell actual viewer data as well but nobody cares [because it might shake up a huge entrenched industry]

Dont worry, the market has spoken. in 5-10 years there will be no ad interuptions during shows and they will just be 10 minute product placement "shows"

afaict, "old" advertising is just kind of whistling and looking off to the side and pretending "new" advertising, with all its actual quantifiable data, doesn't really exist

what's happened is that now that there's metrics that show that "new" advertising doesn't perform very well money is going back into "old" advertising [which probably performs identically poorly but since there's no way to prove it they'll be optimistic]

most national brands could turn 90% of their annual marketing spend into a price cut and do way better

I'd actually be surprised if traditional did anywhere nearly as well

the Nielsen lies are just so established in the industry that there's no stopping them.

I suspect that most marketing management knows how ineffective their efforts are but they're not going to tell their boss "you know what would actually help? take away my $200 million, fire almost everyone in my department and use that money make the product better and cheaper"

it's not like ads don't work, they do, it's just that it all falls under "brand awareness" and "brand lift" and those are some really vague numbers so you really need truly mass market products to make advertising work for you

Only, $785,216.96 they can easily go to a million.

i listened to the "sound of sport" docu recently

at one point this old british dude is discussing tennis coverage and how they get some of the difficult effects and whatnot and he mentions how relatively new the idea of having broadcast commentary is

apparently up until recently there was a vocal minority that was totally against having commentary at all and would write in to the various stations and tell them that their poo poo was garbage and to knock it off p often

to be fair i dont think anyone enjoys watching or listening to a game with the opposing team's media broadcast. that's why you usually get a pick when you do online streams of games of which feed to watch home/away.

the entire advertising industry, which drives all media, is built on elaborate lies that everyone knows are lies but that no one can acknowledge because the lie makes it all work.

like as soon as someone that people listen to starts to grapple with the incredibly hosed up math of tv ratings, all the networks are hosed, every one of them.

it's like that thing back in the 80s where they started looking at actual sales to find out what the top 40 hits were instead of just asking record store owners for ther opinions were and omg it turns out rap and country are HUGE except this is about several orders of magnitude more money

but you can't avoid the effect of volume advertising. I mean when I see an ad for KFC all it does it flick that brain clit I've got associated with the first taste of it and I want KFC and it has little to do with the specific product KFC are advertising I just want fried chicken godfamn it and this works I know on me because seeing some KFC rubbish on the ground has this effect I am a worthless consumer someone wake me up when we can pirate food
