This is such utter loving bullshit it makes me angry. The thing with the actual real word is that when you go out and get a job, the company you work for is going to hire people with the same drive and work ethic as you. So you'll work with a bunch of complete strangers, sure, but they'll know that the work is important and will devote real time to getting it done well. Academics would know this, if they had the balls to come down from their ivory towers once in a while. It's funny because there's a real divide in the degree I did (geology at Monash) between lecturers who work with industry, and lecturers that don't. The ones that work with industry on things have a much different idea on how the actual real world works. One of my undergrad lecturers put a new part in a question that he set us for an assignment, it was originally "How did this form" and then he emailed everyone two days before it was due with "Also guys I want you to put how it formed into the context of the regional tectonic environment". I called him on it, because there wasn't a lot of time, and he said "well when you've got a real job, you'll be expected to put all sorts of detail into your reports that isn't explicitly called for". Which surprise surprise, now that I have a real job he couldn't do in his wildest dreams, is exactly how it doesn't loving work.

Brisbane cbd: very heavy police presence. Everything is behind a barricade or barrier of some description. Soothing romantic era music on the mall clashes with the Christmas display outside Myers. Casino is still open. Brisbane is empty, showing itself as a bloated country town. Police have special g20 cop caps. Hungry jacks still open too. Delegates playing tourist already have the sad Queensland eyes seeing the emptiness. This whole thing is a waste. Go have your meeting where it won't matter. It's a useless display of military style population control. Shutting down the whole city for something that doesn't affect us. Queensland is too isolationist to be able to get away with this without making it a joke. To top it off, the old guy in the wheelchair who sings along to country ballads outside MacArthur is belting it out at 8 in the morning. Later, I'm off to join the secessionist movement. Edit: wheelchair crooner got moved on. He has low vision so he accidentally ran into the cops on his way out. asio fucked around with this message at 00:03 on Nov 14, 2014 |

I'm not sure if it's the same for other faculties but for commerce/law subjects, we use to remark papers of people that had failed and see if we could get them over the line with a PC. I've known Professors and lecturers that would straight up add marks to students if they came to see them and explained why they needed the marks (eg if they were in their last semester and they needed to graduate). With international students, it really is up to whether the individual student wants to work as it is with any other student. When I was at uni and there were courses with group work, there would also be a component where you could rate how the other members of your group contributed which would affect the final mark for the assignment. I'd hate to break it to you but this is exactly how it loving works. A company isn't going to be some omniscient entity dedicated to maximum efficiency, people slack off all the time and in large companies, there are going to be people who do sweet gently caress all and still not get fired or moved because they can play politics better or they've been there for way too long. It's all about working smarter, not harder. Also details do change all the time and it's really not uncommon for managers to add more work to a time sensitive project or to expect you to have done more than what was required. Learning how to manage expectations and delegate work down or back up is a pretty important role in any job. This is even more obvious at the manager/executive level or with project based jobs where as long as you've got a good team working for you who can meet all their targets, you really don't even have to show up to work except to make sure that everyone else does. Welcome to management 101!

They had it in Sydney once and very intelligently put it out at Olympic Park which could be closed off without anybody noticing, and let all of the very important people move between the airport and the site in helicopters so that nobody had to plan their daily commute around police escorts. Then George W Bush wanted to see Oprah's House so we closed down all of Sydney for a weekend.

Kegslayer posted:Are you working full time now? Yes, I'm working full time. Took today off for the WoW expansion release, shoot me :P I'm an exploration geologist. If I'm writing a report on the formation of something, I have a strict brief on writing it in such a way as to talk about its formation in a mineral field context and the economic feasibility of its exploration and exploitation. I work for a company that, at odds with the majority of the industry, has a centralised exploration team. We're all there because we're good at what we do and we're also a small team, so there really isn't room for slackers. When you have 22 people with the occasional contractor taking care of seven or eight exploration projects on the go at once, if anyone drops the ball it's really noticeable. And we have very strict lines of reporting up and very strict lines of delegation down - someone from project generation can't just come in and tell us to help them with something of their's without going up through exco and back down again. Maybe it's just that I'm lucky. Geology is a collaborative science, so everyone has to be able to work well with each other. We spend at least a few hours a week standing around the map table telling each other why we're wrong about something we're looking at or showing off our latest results. Our projects also have strict boundaries, as the result of various technical and legislative constraints.

Glencore to shut all Australian coal mines for 3 weeks as commodity prices fall Mining giant which employs 8600 people announces shut down due to oversupply of coal theguardian.com, Friday 14 November 2014 10.11 AEST Mining giant Glencore will shut down its Australian coal operations for three weeks due to an oversupply of the commodity. The three week shut down will be carried out across all of Glencore’s Australian coal operations in December. Glencore said the move was driven by the current oversupply of coal, which has hurt prices of the commodity. Glencore owns 13 coal mines across NSW and Queensland, which produced more than 80 million tonnes of thermal and coking coal last year and employed around 8,600 people. The shutdown will see the company’s coal production cut by around five million tonnes. “This is a considered management decision given the current oversupply situation and reduces the need to push incremental sales into an already weak pricing environment,” Glencore said in a statement. But the company said it was confident demand for coal would grow and the oversupply would be addressed over the medium term. “We remain confident in demand growth for our products and believe that the supply and demand balance will be restored in the medium term,” it said.
