I feel like the show's biggest misstep so far is that despite being a team-based format, the team does everything as individuals. You would think for a massive team based tournament they'd actually do any of their prepwork together at any point. I know it's for dramatic purposes but it's really silly how none of them even knew what their teammates' upgrades were until the day of the fight(or the night before in the case of Winning Road). They really should be making some attempt to synergize as a team at all, but instead they're writing them like three individual fighters instead of a team.

Sakai kind of notes this at the end of the episode. At the very least that's what I inferred from his statement about Fumina essentially using Winning to get them into gear as a rebut to the statement by the other fellow that they had excellent teamwork. I think the actual revelation of needing to get their asses in gear won't happen for a little bit yet, in the same way it took a little while for Sei to figure out how to up his modelling game. I figure they won't really beat us over the head with it too much till it gets to the point that it's obvious they need to step it up and settle their issues.

About episode 6, I think the Winning Gundam's gimmick was a great idea. What it does is it keeps the entire team from being destroyed because of their lack of actual teamwork, until such time in the series as they manage to get better at it. If it was a team of three Fuminas, they would be ready to roll into action as a team right now because Fumina is a capable strategist with a focus on teamwork, but Sekai and Yuuma just aren't up to it. Most of the other teams have been fighting together for ages and so have a clear advantage in that, and the Try Fighters do not have any instant affinity with each other on the battlefield which could compensate for it. So, Fumina had to be pragmatic and build a machine specialised so that it would be able to stop them being utterly crushed.

It's not going to last, though. Now other teams know what the gimmick is, they can try to combat it, and they should be able to realise that the others will be in deep trouble if Fumina gets taken out. Sekai and Yuuma are definitely going to have to up their game.

Before the fight in ep 6 I was wondering whether Fumina would say something like "Right, now it's time for the intensive teamwork training we need!" but no. It seems she knew she was going to have to rely on the Winning Road. I suppose you can't just training montage teamwork in a series about 3 player team battles. Sekai couldn't even handle staying awake to watch the rules, and Yuuma didn't think it was worth trying to discuss anything with him. There was just no way they could get it together in such a short space of time.
Really, I've got to hand it to Fumina for being optimistic while still being fully aware of her team's shortcomings.

Really, I've got to hand it to Fumina for being optimistic while still being fully aware of her team's shortcomings.

Im sure Fumina is smart enough to understand that she's painted a big bullseye on her back with her performance with the winning and already has at least one countermeasure waiting for when she gets inevitably taken out. They would have to utterly destroy the entire machine for her to be out of play entirely and the winning seems nimble enough for her to pop its head and go into core fighter mode to keep her in a leading role even though most of the machine is gone. In the case that they do destroy the core fighter, at least Yuuma could still use the launcher if they didnt destroy its legs.

The big problem is if she gets taken out first and cant provide guidance to the other two, which will mean that they'd have to fend for themselves against a skilled team. Im guessing thats going to be her focus next. Actually get those two to think like a team instead of doing things that inadvertently help the other members. Another less likely but still possible scenario is that the enemy team focuses on the other two with the idea that if they are gone, there wont be anything else to support. Which will undoubtedly lead to Fumina exercising her right to split the winning into three individually controlled parts to actually win.

vvv
Thats what happened this episode. But only after Sekai fisted the ground and knocked out the artillery ez8's cloak. Its what Yuuma was trying to do with team vase as well but sekai body blocked him and like an idiot followed them into an enclosed area he didnt have vantage of. Yuuma really isn't the problem in the group right now, I'm sure that if Sei changed just a tiny bit Yuuma would have no problem working with him.

Cao Ni Ma

Actually thinking about it, Sekai's recklessness would be a good story point not only for himself but for Fumina as well. Fumina's the group leader, its her responsability to sit down and tell him, "Yo you are going to get yourself hosed and in the process get us hosed as well". She's the caring supportive kind but ultimately she's also their leader and sometimes when thats your role you have to set people straight, even if it might hurt them.

But I guess thats also as good of a time as any to introduce us to Sekai's master unless they plan to never do :(

Positive outcome:

Sekai eventually gets dramatically wrecked and his next Gundam actually is less powerful but better designed for teamwork, forcing him to do something besides charge ahead. The new Gundam isn't as powerful as Build Burning but it is his Gundam, not Sei's, and better for it.

Negative outcome:

Sekai eventually gets dramatically wrecked and his next Gundam is a 3-part combiner with Lightning 2 and Winning 2, allowing him to take over every fight while the other two become traditional useless-rear end Super Robot support pilots.

Worst outcome:

Sekai gets the RG System and Build Knuckle.

You are all forgetting neither Sekai nor Yuuma wanted in on gunpla fighting from the start. Fumina had to literally tie Sekai to a chair and Yuuma only changed his mind after the mantis guy battle. If anyone has stakes here, it's Fumina; she's been able to keep her team together and actually win some battles, not to mention completely design a gunpla for that purpose.

It would be nice if Yuuma's performance anxiety was a thing that came up when relevant during difficult battles against supposed favourites. It might even develop his character arc and allow us to build empathy with one of the main cast. Maybe.

My money's on "Sekai gives a speech so Yuuma doesn't choke at a critical moment". The show's treating it like a (relatively) serious thing so it's probably not going to resolve it with a joke.

Cao Ni Ma

Sekai would have to be someone Yuuma gives a gently caress about to take anything he says right now to heart though. So for that to happen Sekai needs to develop further, since everything points to Yuuma actively loathing him right now.

As it stands right now, Sakai has a better chance of snapping Yuuma out of a funk than Sekai.

People have, but you wouldn't know it was ever an issue by the way Yuuma behaves in battles. A moment of hesitation on the field, him taking a stray grazing shot and freaking out, even just acting rattled before a match would be the little moments of characterization that would make him easier to empathize with.

Like, BF1 had Reiji going "but Sei we'll damage the Build Strike/show our secret plavsky power/whatever" at various moments to reinforce that there's some subtext as to how or why these people fight.

Yuuma has probably the clearest backstory and reason for motivation/hesitation but it's isolated to little scenes outside of battles, which is one of the reasons why I think people are saying the fights are boring thus far. In the first season the battles were more an extension of the two fighters' viewpoints meeting.
