Nope, mostly it's from consultancy work and various speaking engagements, plus grants for specific side projects. I'm working on getting some regular work as part of a open source module I'm helping King's College London's war studies department put together, lecturing as part of that, as well as working on a large grant from a foundation. There's actually a lot of discussion among journalists at the moment about investigative journalism become increasingly the realm of non-profit groups relying on grants and fellowships, so I'm heading in that direction more than anything. I'm also focusing on training journalists, off to Jordan at the start of December for the ARIJ conference to train Arab journalists in the tools and techniques I use. The irony is Seymour Hersh is their keynote speaker.

I like the Brown Moses blog and think the contributions are great but I agree there is an issue with a content source also being a mod and also being very interested in the issue. You have a situation where posters feel comfortable discussing the quality of the reporting from the New York Times, RT, Vice, etc but there is a often mentioned blog that discussion of is certainly implied to be dangerous. This leads to the Brown Moses blog viewpoint effectively becoming the Somethingawful thread viewpoint. I'm not saying that its conclusions are about to be torn down and valid criticisms are being brutally suppressed. Quite the contrary, I think if the blog author was not also a mod and not also a frequent poster, the Brown Moses blog would end up looking stronger as a source. The implication or perception of soft censorship, even if that perception is baseless or inaccurate, weakens credibility.

Brown Moses is one of the most moderate of moderators I've ever seen, he never jumps on anyone, and generally only provides information.
