There's a certain strain of evangelical (not all, but those that believe this make the news and those that don't... don't) that believes that a "one world order" is foretold in the book of Revelation as a necessary precursor to the end times and have latched onto the UN as that herald of apocalypse, and therefore oppose it. Same reason they oppose anything that smacks of a national ID system or anything like that: the mark of the Beast.

It's complete batshit nonsense, and I say this as a Protestant Christian.

Stops them from violating the rights of women, muslims, children, workers, and gays. Also probably for the same reason they love Israel: end-times prophecy.

What confuses me about this trailer is that Cameron's friend has a legitimate point about the commercialisation of Christmas diluting its true meaning, but he's apparently completely in the wrong. The whole point of the film seems to be that Christmas is awesome just the way it is and you shouldn't ruin it by criticising its capitalist elements. Which is fair enough, I guess, but doesn't strike me as very Christian.

Yeah, but they still feel like the UN is the 'bad guys' and by opposing them, they're on Gods side.

edit; The part where the bad guys inevitably win and rule for a while also kinda muddies the water a little.

Wemus, you'll want to have a look at Revelation 13 and 17-18 in particular but there's a few other areas of the Bible too. Basically the UN is the beast of Revelation, or it's also the new Babylon. There's a deep rabbit hole that can be dove into if you're interested.

Sure, but they also can't support the apocalypse or help bring it about.

9 A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead or on their hand, 10 they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.”

I don't think I've ever heard of anything more cynical than "a Christmas movie telling Christians that all the awfully un-Christian commercialized aspects of Christmas that they partake in every year are Jesus-approved." I just wanna clarify this about The Identical, they do use Elvis's name in the film. Once. To say, "there's only one Elvis." In other words The Identical is about an elvis impersonator and that realization made the movie for me.

Also, 3 days until Saving christmas! Am I the only one masochistic enough to pay money to watch it?

The ancestors of your evangelical churches didn't start celebrating Christmas until relatively recently precisely because of its rather ambiguous relation to Jesus. Who's trying to hijack whose holiday?

I distinctly remember hearing a guy on Christian radio pray for the sidewalks to ice over on Halloween when I was a kid, so I'm guessing there's not a bunch of pro-Halloween Christians. Still, in a few years maybe the tradition of trunk or treat in church parking lots will be some kind of notable Christian experience.

Yeah, ultra-conservative christians loving hate halloween. If I had to guess it's probably because it has no real links to Christian tradition and is very "pagan" compared to other holidays celebrated in the states.

They still love wearing costumes and giving out candy, they just do it on a different day and at church so it magically loses all of its Satan powers. It's kind of like how they say that Santa Claus is Christian because he's totally St. Nicholas even though his appearance and customs are all from Pagan celebrations that predate St. Nicholas' birth.

Christians invented Halloween, like they did with Easter and Christmas and all that poo poo. It's some garbage about souls being saved, but with pagan local flavor where people have fun but suddenly the local gods are deadly loving demons out for your soul instead of magical people who just like to drink and fight and have sex.

My grandma's church stopped calling their thing a "Halloween Alternative" and call it Fall Fest now. It's still designed to keep the church kids off the streets from 5-10PM on Halloween lest they go out and have some fun, but they dialed back the culture war a little bit. They still hate Santa though.

It's pretty amusing that these people are up in arms about the re-branding of a holiday just to turn around and do the same to another one, just because the commercialization of that one is a little too close to the holiday's pagan roots.

I have a few friends in my church who legitimately hate Halloween, because they think it makes light of serious things (--> demons). But churches can easily do Halloween festivals; just look back at how the Church used to do it. The issue is that a lot of these churches are the kind of Protestant that hate just about any pre-Puritan traditions.

(It all goes back to Puritans.)

Do you guys know of any good Christian films about Advent/Christmas that aren't a retelling of the Nativity?

Remember the Puritans literally banned Christmas for being a papist, neo-pagan conspiracy

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_controversy#Puritan_era

quote:

In Colonial America, the Puritans of New England disapproved of Christmas, and celebration was outlawed in Boston from 1659 to 1681.[23][24] The ban by the Pilgrims was revoked by English governor Edmund Andros, however it was not until the mid-19th century that celebrating Christmas became fashionable in the Boston region.[25] By the Declaration of Independence in 1776, it was not widely celebrated in the US.[24]

There needs to be a documentary on that

http://www.christiandomesticdiscipline.com/home.html

quote:

Domestic Discipline (DD) marriage is one in which one partner is given authority over the other, and has the means to back up that authority, usually by spanking. The application and practise of DD in each marriage is as unique as the individuals who make up that marriage. There is no "One Ring of Power" in the Domestic Discipline world, to which all DD couples must bow; no singular path to "true DD enlightenment". What works well for one DD couple may not be a good fit for another marriage. Therefore, you may see many different suggestions espoused on this site and elsewhere.

quote:

There is a world of difference between the thought of a spanking and the real thing. I used to think that I thought of it as sexually arousing... until I actually had one. Personally, I find there is nothing arousing about a real spanking. I don't enjoy it. I don't want sex for quite some time afterwards.

For me, what is arousing is the authority denoted by a man who spanks. I am attracted to the authority in my husband. The spanking is sort of a necessary evil...

quote:

A fearful wife may begin crying or pleading and find it difficult to remain still. Reassure her. of your intent and love (yes this will hurt, that is why it is a punishment) then instruct her to be still. Remind her that she is not in control of this discipline. You should continue the lashing through her tears and pleas for you to stop, until you are certain the message was received. This will insure her remorse and therefore stop the undesirable behavior.

A sound lashing is five to ten strokes with your hand, or three to five strokes with a strap; some wives need more. To avoid brusing do not strike the same area in repetition. Gauge your decision to proceed based on your wife's readiness to repent.

You may find it difficult to cause your wife pain, but as a woman she needs the release of guilt that this form of punishment brings. Afterwards, help her up gently and hold her while allowing her to cry for as long as you both feel necessary. If you have children instruct her to wash her face before emerging from the room.

I'm still a little sad that King of the Hill didn't last long enough to do an episode about it. I can just see it now: Hank and Peggy meet a nice couple at church and become friends. Then they get invited over for bible study after the husband misunderstands Hank's enthusiasm for "discipline" (he of course means the protestant work ethic necessary to repair his riding lawnmower), and right at the first act break they walk into the living room, see the couple decked out in Christian bondage gear and cut to commercial right as Hank lets out the first "bwaugh!"
