The individual may be aware they are lying, or may believe they are telling the truth, being unaware that they are relating fantasies. e: I don't doubt that a 24 year old can make bank and do Important Things. I'm like a year older than him and make the salary he claims to (actually, more). I've actually met CF in person and, aside from the obvious social issues that keep cropping up once every other week, the dude knows his poo poo and is really invested in it. I don't think it's outlandish to believe that he makes as much as he says, particularly in Norfolk.

If I interviewed for a job and wanted to call back and see if they had come to a decision, is about a week a good amount of time to wait? I felt like I really nailed the interview and hit it off very well with the department lead and asked the right questions. He didn't mention how many other candidates there were and I wasn't sure if inquiring about it was inappropriate.

They could still be interviewing. Or waiting for HR approval to make an offer. Or... whatever. Calling back to ask if they've come to a decision is going to make it look like you're impatient. Or antsy. Which you probably are. Waiting for a call which may never come does that.

I'm thankful that my time in the Army wasn't spent anywhere near computers. I'll take being cold and muddy with a ruck and rifle out in the middle of nowhere with cool dudes around me over being stuck constantly answering to battle captains or whatever in a warm building. Also I love my job (most of the time) as a DC based SOC dude. Mainly I think because there wasn't one where I work until this last year and I'm basically getting to be part of the team that is writing the rules as we go.

A pay number isn't valuable unless it's attached to benefits and cost of living. My paycheck will almost double when I move to SF but I'll probably have the same left over at the end of the month.

Unless you have a family, health benefits are kind of a moot point for young, healthy people. Things like tuition reimbursement, vacation, paid sick time, and flexible working arrangements are arguably more important to quality of living. You can lump a 401k in there, too; however recall that most companies require anywhere from 3-6 years of service for full vestment and most don't contribute their funds until the end of the calendar year, so even that has lost a good deal of its drawing power. This isn't 1965 anymore: at the end of the day, none of those benefits matter if you can't afford to live off of what you make, so salary is probably more important than it has ever been.
