They also added a third major faction to the 4X side of things - pirates, which can establish their own empire or sorts - and there are victory/failure conditions for either joining them and uniting the universe under your banner, or wiping them out entirely.

The only bad thing about HD is they took out the incredible original intro. Other than that its a stellar upgrade of an already great game.
