I respect your desire not to want to hear about it anymore, but why does the conversation need to be compartmentalized? I mean, the M:tG thread isn't the #GamerGate Helldump thread if there is such a thing, but I think we've all got at least some stake in the conversation, considering we're all gamers.

Seconded.

Relevant: MTG writer wrecks his writing career because of his own stupidity relating to tweets about this poo poo. Kibler and others have epic comebacks that make him look even stupider.

Not relevant: Arguing about the actual thing he got involved with.

The irony is at this point I certainly don't and most others I would hazard also don't even know which sides there are any more? The ones who are against women and are for protecting the subculture that is gaming, or is that conflating the two, or are there people against those things?

The whole thing is so stupid you have to trawl through some terrible twitter argument to even know what is going on. gently caress that noise.

Yeah. And I don't want to derail the thread anymore, but that's basically the crux of the issue. Both "sides" have degenerated into parody. Are you a member of the side that hates women or the side that hates gamers?

Well, no, actually. And the lines are so stark that the moment you criticize Zoe Quinn or Brianna Wu or any of the other people who have done some frankly shady poo poo, you are one of the degenerate ogres threatening to rape their critics to death (and being on the same "side" of any issue as those people makes my skin crawl). The moment you criticize the way women are depicted in games or even the way female video game developers are treated you are a SJW tumblr hipster conspiracist.

I dunno, the whole thing is very toxic to me. I'm not trying to equivocate with some "truth is in the middle, both sides are wrong" stuff, obviously the people threatening to rape and murder their opponents are the most wrong, but it's hard to even have a conversation about this because the people I want to agree with, the "anti-GG" side I guess, assumes that each and every one of the thousands or millions of "gamergaters" is motivated purely by a hatred of women in general and women in gaming particularly, and the grossly inaccurate media coverage sustains this. The idea is ridiculous on its face and only someone totally hip-deep in the mire could actually accept such an assertion at face value. Even more so when the other side's belief is that their opponents are involved in a ridiculous conspiracy to oppress gamers. And then you see actual, no-holds-barred Elliot Rodger-level misogyny and actual, for-real collusion and it just validates these stupid assertions.

Besides, the spectacle of idiot nerds trumpeting their moral superiority over what is basically a festering crevice in the Internet gets stale really fast. I'm not impressed by your great moral fortitude in condemning the guy who threatened Anita Sarkeesian with death, bro. I'm just sick of it and I'm sad that it's spilling over into Magic.

This is exactly the kind of reductive :smugbert: poo poo that has somehow, impossibly, caused the side that's opposed to raping their opponents to death to lose the moral high ground. Do you genuinely believe that thousands or millions of people simply hate women so much that it's spawned a massive media meltdown? Is that your final answer? It's a big problem I have with these kinds of ideological arguments in general: if you assume your opponent is a hate golem, there's no need to ever engage with them or their arguments.

Yeah I had to get some stuff off my chest I guess. I was so upset the first time I heard people mention Gamergate at GP NJ that it really cast a pall over the weekend because I knew it was a foolish and vain hope but I was really, really hoping that somehow this corner of my life would remain isolated from it.

Anyways the best way to stop talking about something is to stop talking about it. So: did anyone else read Frank Lepore's article on the All Creatures modern deck on TCGplayer?

http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/article.asp?ID=12198

It's an adorable deck and I want to play it so bad. I've really been taking a break from Modern until January because UR Delver is so prominent, but with Treasure Cruise hopefully getting the axe and Modern Masters 2 on the horizon I am looking for a second deck. I already play Affinity though so I'm looking for something slower and more controlly.

Cathodion consistently never got to use its effect for anything and was just a 3/3 for 3. I put in Etched Champion over it iirc. Or was it Scarecrone? I dunno, three-drop artifact dude is a pretty vague slot.

And for Scrap Savant I'm loving Mirrorworks and Thopter Assembly, but I only have one Mirrorworks and it's way, way better in the white deck. I like having three SoFaF, attacking with a double striker, and then floating insane amounts of mana for Mobilization (especially with Cathar's Crusade).

I like Doom Engine in Daretti, and also Feldon.

There's nothing wrong with a 6/6 for 6 that goes over tiny men. There's also nothing wrong with tapping Feldon and making them every turn to catapult at your enemies, and then Weldering up something good, and then basically doing 12 damage for 3 mana.

Yeah, my mom went on that "Everything not Jesus is Satan" kick too for a time. I wasn't into Magic at the time, but apparently Digimon was full of demonic familiars or something, so it was banned in the household. Incidentally, this freed up a lot of time for me to get into early internet pornography at the tender age of 11, before people knew there was porn on the internet and most internet filters could be beaten simply by using Firefox instead of IE.

Also, I distinctly remember seeing the Shandalar game on PC, and thinking it looked pretty cool. Shame I never got it, or I could have gotten a head start on my addiction collection.

So. I didn't want to bring this up before, because I didn't have a lot of evidence, but GP TBD is coming up and it's kind of a huge deal. To recap what we know:
1) May 30-31st, there will be three simultaneous GPs at three locations in the world: one in NA, one in APAC, one in Europe. The format of these is not precisely known.
2) The NA one is likely to be somewhere on the West Coast due to the sponsors (CF and Cascade).
3) Judge scuttlebutt is that they are preparing for ten thousand people at the US one alone. That combined with the West Coast thing means that it's an open secret it'll be in Vegas.
4) The format is Limited.
5) After this GP there will be a run of Modern constructed events.
6) The release of Dragons of Tarkir is in March-- EXTREMELY early for a spring set (barely two months after Fate Reforged). For reference, JiN was released on May 2nd. This heavily implies a May release of... something.
7) This is also just rumor, but apparently a judge was told "this is one GP where Judges will be VERY happy to be paid in boxes."

This taken all together: Modern Masters 2 (or a re-release of 1, I've heard both) in May 2015, followed by three massive GPs of MM sealed.
